A measurement of the inclusive pp→tt¯+X production cross section in the τ+jets final state using only the hadronic decays of the τ lepton is presented. The measurement is performed using 20.2 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data recorded at a center-of-mass energy of s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The cross section is measured via a counting experiment by imposing a set of selection criteria on the identification and kinematic variables of the reconstructed particles and jets, and on event kinematic variables and characteristics. The production cross section is measured to be σtt¯=239±29 pb, which is in agreement with the measurements in other final states and the theoretical predictions at this center-of-mass energy.

Measurements of ZZ production in the ℓ+ℓ−ℓ′+ℓ′− channel in proton–proton collisions at 13 TeV center-of-mass energy at the Large Hadron Collider are presented. The data correspond to 36.1 fb−1 of collisions collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2015 and 2016. Here ℓ and ℓ′ stand for electrons or muons. Integrated and differential ZZ→ℓ+ℓ−ℓ′+ℓ′− cross sections with Z→ℓ+ℓ− candidate masses in the range of 66 GeV to 116 GeV are measured in a fiducial phase space corresponding to the detector acceptance and corrected for detector effects. The differential cross sections are presented in bins of twenty observables, including several that describe the jet activity. The integrated cross section is also extrapolated to a total phase space and to all standard model decays of Z bosons with mass between 66 GeV and 116 GeV, resulting in a value of 17.3±0.9[±0.6(stat)±0.5(syst)±0.6(lumi)] pb. The measurements are found to be in good agreement with the standard model. A search for neutral triple gauge couplings is performed using the transverse momentum distribution of the leading Z boson candidate. No evidence for such couplings is found and exclusion limits are set on their parameters.

Developing teaching materials is a time-consuming and expensive activity. Thus, over the years, several consortia have created joint materials to benefit from them. It is expected that shared teaching materials are a means to save effort in its development, to transfer methodological and technical knowledge between different university staff, and to exchange experience in practical application. However, does it really pay off considering the diversity of different educational environments and the difficulties of using externally produced materials, rather than dedicated individual ones? This paper reports on the experience gained in a multi-country project. Both success factors and problems are outlined. It turned out that sharing an educational repository by several partners supports maintaining quality of teaching materials by joint efforts and distributed contributions.

In this paper, we examined the effects of financial news on istanbul Stock Exchange and we tried to predict the direction of ISE National 100 Index open price after the news articles were published. In order to do this study, we got news articles from three big financial websites and we represented them as feature vectors. We obtained class labels from the ISE National 100 Index open price and assigned them to these feature vectors. After creating the datasets, we selected the informative features using Mutual Information (MI) and Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) Weighting methods. According to the selected features, we created feature subsets with different number of features and we trained a Naïve Bayes Classifier with them. We used precision, recall, accuracy and F-Measure metrics to evaluate the performances of our methods. We found out that feature selection can help us use a smaller number of features for classification and as a measure of how useful a feature is, TF-IDF is better than MI. © 2013 SDIWC.

In this study we proposed a new spatiotem poral soil moisture estimation model for nowcasting and forecasting of the agricultural drought. Temporal rain, irrigation coverage, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and parcel based evapotranspiration data are used as inputs of a multiple-input time-delay neural network for spatiotemporal multi-dept. soil moisture estimation. For this purpose, we combined the outcome of another study that provides conversion of multi-temporal satellite image originated NDVT data to spatiotemporal NDVT data. Agricultural drought and water stress risk management are complex processes since they are not only dependent on soil structure and climatic parameters but also they have relevance to plant cover status. Our soil moisture estimation model provides nowcasting ability for water-stress management. It also provides drought forecast information in order to utilize water resources in an optimal way for yield loss reduction. The main capability of this method depends on the applicability of both past time-window data and weather forecast information as the future data to the trained neural network. Agro-meteorological data from randomly placed 6 stations, chosen to be within different agricultural fields, are used in this study. Soil moisture estimation model was performed through a 4-layer time-delay neural network. Past and predicted meteorological parameters are used as a part of inputs to the neural network. We have shown that estimated soil moisture has approximately 3% root mean square error at 15cm and 45cm dept.s of reference verification points.

The deployment of Heterogeneous Networks (Het-Nets), specifically the smallcell networks ranging from picocells, microcells and femtocells, have been increased dramatically with the proliferation of next generation wireless devices and broad traffic demands. Embedding the promising Cognitive Radio (CR) technology into the smallcells have brought complementary increases in spectrum utilization as well as the topological flexibility. This paper deals with the topological control of such CR based smallcell networks by considering the spectrum utilization, packet losses, delay and jitter parameters. The proposed framework analytically models the spectral topology assignment taking into account the analysis of the CR user requests and decides to assign the proper spectrum to the CR smallcell users by dividing the topology in an optimal manner. This optimality is achieved by taking into account different Quality of Service (QoS) parameters like throughput, delay, jitter and packet losses. The proposed frameworks' mathematical model also provides optimal QoS parameter values for more efficient and fair topology assignment, considering the heterogeneous background CR traffic in the surrounding. The proposed method is evaluated for different types of CR traffics and thorough simulation results show that the proposed topology control mechanism provides an optimum number of smallcell CR networks to maintain fair and efficient QoS requirements in the unlicensed bands. © 2013 IEEE.

Multispectral scene is an image stack including numerous spectral bands from the electromagnetic wave spectrum, leading to richer spectral resolution. On the other hand, higher spatial resolution is included in the Panchromatic image. In order to have an image with higher spectral and spatial resolution, the applied merging process is called fusion. In this paper, fourteen different image fusion techniques were implemented. Serial implementations of all these approaches have longer execution time disadvantage compared to parallel approaches. To decrease execution time, the methods were modified with parallel computing approaches. This paper presents a comparison regarding speed performance of all fourteen methods' serial and parallel implementations to increase pixel resolution and keep spatial resolution high by combining spectral and spatial information of high and low resolution images of the same co-registered region. Additionally, spectral quality assessments of methods are presented. © 2013 IEEE.

This Letter presents a measurement of the inelastic proton-proton cross section using 60 μb−1 of pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy s of 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Inelastic interactions are selected using rings of plastic scintillators in the forward region (2.07<|η|<3.86) of the detector. A cross section of 68.1±1.4 mb is measured in the fiducial region ξ=MX2/s>10−6, where MX is the larger invariant mass of the two hadronic systems separated by the largest rapidity gap in the event. In this ξ range the scintillators are highly efficient. For diffractive events this corresponds to cases where at least one proton dissociates to a system with MX>13 GeV. The measured cross section is compared with a range of theoretical predictions. When extrapolated to the full phase space, a cross section of 78.1±2.9 mb is measured, consistent with the inelastic cross section increasing with center-of-mass energy.

A search for the decays of the Higgs and Z bosons to a ϕ meson and a photon is performed with a pp collision data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.7 fb−1 collected at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. No significant excess of events is observed above the background, and 95% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions of the Higgs and Z boson decays to ϕγ of 1.4×10−3 and 8.3×10−6, respectively, are obtained.
