The momentum-weighted sum of the charges of tracks associated to a jet is sensitive to the charge of the initiating quark or gluon. This paper presents a measurement of the distribution of momentum-weighted sums, called jet charge, in dijet events using 20.3 fb−1 of data recorded with the ATLAS detector at s=8 TeV in pp collisions at the LHC. The jet charge distribution is unfolded to remove distortions from detector effects and the resulting particle-level distribution is compared with several models. The pT dependence of the jet charge distribution average and standard deviation are compared to predictions obtained with several leading-order and next-to-leading-order parton distribution functions. The data are also compared to different Monte Carlo simulations of QCD dijet production using various settings of the free parameters within these models. The chosen value of the strong coupling constant used to calculate gluon radiation is found to have a significant impact on the predicted jet charge. There is evidence for a pT dependence of the jet charge distribution for a given jet flavor. In agreement with perturbative QCD predictions, the data show that the average jet charge of quark-initiated jets decreases in magnitude as the energy of the jet increases.

Prompt photon production in sNN=2.76-TeV Pb+Pb collisions has been measured by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider using data collected in 2011 with an integrated luminosity of 0.14 nb−1. Inclusive photon yields, scaled by the mean nuclear thickness function, are presented as a function of collision centrality and transverse momentum in two pseudorapidity intervals, |η|<1.37 and 1.52≤|η|<2.37. The scaled yields in the two pseudorapidity intervals, as well as the ratios of the forward yields to those at midrapidity, are compared to the expectations from next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD (pQCD) calculations. The measured cross sections agree well with the predictions for proton-proton collisions within statistical and systematic uncertainties. Both the yields and the ratios are also compared to two other pQCD calculations, one which uses the isospin content appropriate to colliding lead nuclei and another which includes nuclear modifications to the nucleon parton distribution functions.

AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator) is a part of the synchronous generator and it is responsible for regulating the reactive power and voltage level under normal operating terms at different load levels. The modeled system composed of the amplifier, exciter, sensor and proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller. In order to model the system state space method is used. Also, their specifications and behaviors are discussed briefly. Simulation of the AVR system is carried out on the interface developed by Matlab GUI and the results are presented. The generator terminal voltage step responses are estimated by studying the controller parameters. In this paper, a system using Ziegler-Nichols (ZN) method as a tuning method for determining the parameters of PID control for an AVR system is proposed. Also the transient stability of AVR system with PID parameters change is proposed. © 2013 IEEE.

An active subnetwork is a group of interconnected genes that show condition-specific differences. It has been observed that the gene products that have alterations associated with a disease of interest, incline to be part of the subnetworks among the overall interaction network. Hence, the integration of the interaction data with the genotypic data underlying disease states facilitates the separation of the subnetworks perturbed in a given disorder from the rest of the network. In the literature, active subnetwork search is used to discover disease related regulatory pathways, dysregulated genes, functional modules, cancer markers, to classify diseases, and to predict response to treatment. In this study, a genetic algorithm based method is developed for active subnetwork search and applied to WTCCC Rheumatoid Arthritis genome-wide association study dataset. The relevance of the identified subnetworks against the disease is compared in terms of biological pathways. Our results show that the proposed method works well in detecting the significant RA associated subnetworks, and it is also applicable to recognize subnetworks of other complex diseases.

Word Sense Disambiguation (WSD) has become even more important research area in recent years with the widespread usage of Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications. WSD task has two variants: "Lexical Sample" and "All Words" approaches. Lexical Sample approach disambiguates the occurrences of a small sample of target words that were previously selected, while in the latter all the words in a piece of text are disambiguated. In the scope of this work, a Lexical Sample Dataset for Turkish has been prepared. As a first step, highly ambiguous words in Turkish have been selected. Collection of text samples for chosen words has been completed. Five taggers have annotated the word senses. This paper summarizes the step-by-step building-up process of a Lexical Sample Dataset in Turkish and presents the results of some experiments on it. © 2012 IEEE.

A measurement of the Higgs boson mass is presented based on the combined data samples of the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN LHC in the H→γγ and H→ZZ→4ℓ decay channels. The results are obtained from a simultaneous fit to the reconstructed invariant mass peaks in the two channels and for the two experiments. The measured masses from the individual channels and the two experiments are found to be consistent among themselves. The combined measured mass of the Higgs boson is mH=125.09±0.21 (stat)±0.11 (syst) GeV.

This paper presents the results of main part-of-speech tagging of Turkish sentences using Conditional Random Fields (CRFs). Although CRFs are applied to many different languages for part-of-speech (POS) tagging, Turkish poses interesting challenges to be modeled with them. The challenges include issues related to the statistical model of the problem as well as issues related to computational complexity and scaling. In this paper, we propose a novel model for main-POS tagging in Turkish. Furthermore, we propose some approaches to reduce the computational complexity and allow better scaling characteristics or improve the performance without increased complexity. These approaches are discussed with respect to their advantages and disadvantages. We show that the best approach is competitive with the current state of the art in accuracy and also in training and test durations. The good results obtained imply a good first step towards full morphological disambiguation.

A measurement of spin correlation in tt¯ production is presented using data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1. The correlation between the top and antitop quark spins is extracted from dilepton tt¯ events by using the difference in the azimuthal angle between the two charged leptons in the laboratory frame. In the helicity basis the measured degree of correlation corresponds to Ahelicity=0.38±0.04, in agreement with the standard model prediction. A search is performed for pair production of top squarks with masses close to the top quark mass decaying to predominantly right-handed top quarks and a light neutralino, the lightest supersymmetric particle. Top squarks with masses between the top quark mass and 191 GeV are excluded at the 95% confidence level.

Measurements of the total and differential cross sections of Higgs boson production are performed using 20.3 fb−1 of pp collisions produced by the Large Hadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy of s=8 TeV and recorded by the ATLAS detector. Cross sections are obtained from measured H→γγ and H→ZZ*→4ℓ event yields, which are combined accounting for detector efficiencies, fiducial acceptances, and branching fractions. Differential cross sections are reported as a function of Higgs boson transverse momentum, Higgs boson rapidity, number of jets in the event, and transverse momentum of the leading jet. The total production cross section is determined to be σpp→H=33.0±5.3 (stat)±1.6 (syst) pb. The measurements are compared to state-of-the-art predictions.
