A new speckle reduction algorithm based on subband decomposition and multiscale edge detection is presented. The subband decomposition is performed using a DFT/RDFT-based symmetric, zero-phase, nonoverlapping digital filter bank. The noisy images are decomposed into sub-images using RDFT transform based subband decomposition, an edge image is obtained for each level using these sub-images, then a threshold value is estimated according to noise variance in each subband and soft-thresholding is applied on the non-edge regions of the subband images. The despeckled image is obtained from the thresholded subband images using the inverse RDFT transform. The proposed speckle reduction method is applied to several test images corrupted by speckle noise as well as experimental RADARSAT/SAR images. Despeckled images show that this method has better performance than the case where no edge information is used.

A new speckle reduction algorithm based on lattice filters for SAR imaging is presented. In the new method, the subband decomposition of the speckled image is performed using lattice filters. The noisy image is decomposed into subband images using high-pass and low-pass filters having lattice structure, then a threshold value is estimated according to noise variance in each subband and soft-thresholding is applied on the subband images. The despeckled image is obtained from the thresholded subband images using the inverse lattice filter. The proposed speckle reduction method is applied to RADARSAT/SAR images. The performance of the proposed method has also been compared with median filtering, and discrete and stationary wavelet transform based speckle reduction methods. Results show that the proposed method may be used efficiently for speckle noise reduction in SAR images.

This paper describes the development of remotely accessible electrical drive sets for hands-on education in electrical machinery, electrical drive and control courses as well as certain aspects of motion control and power electronics. The remote access is provided via the developed client-server communication method using the TCP/IP protocol to run the Matlab/Simulink compatible electrical drive sets operating on the remote server side. The developed method allows access to the robotics and electrical drive test-beds, namele permanent magnet DC (PMDC), permanent magnet synchronous (PMSM), and induction motor (IM) motor-load sets, developed for both on-site and remote use at the Control Laboratory in the university of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF). The client-server communication is developed in C/C++ using wxWidgets to communicate with the Matlab/Simulink downloadable DS1104, which is the control unit used in all the electrical drive systems in the lab. Edge detection is an important topic in image processing and a main tool in pattern recognition and image segmentation. Many edge detection techniques are available in the literature. 'A number of recent edge detectors are multiscale and include three main processing steps: smoothing, differentiation and labeling' (Ziau and Tabbone, 1997). This paper, presents a proposed method which is suitable for edge detection in images. This method is based on the use of the clustering algorithms (Self-Organizing Map (SOM), K-Means) and a gray scale edge detector (Canny, Generalized Edge Detector (GED)). It is shown that using the grayscale edge detectors may miss some parts of the edges which can be found using the proposed method.

In this paper, we present a new fusion algorithm based on a multidecomposition approach with the DFT based symmetric, zero-phase, nonoverlapping digital filter bank representation. The DFT of the signal is separated into two parts leading to the low and high -pass components then decimated by two to obtain subband signals. The original signal may be recovered by interpolating the subband signals, computing their inverse DFT and summing the results. In the proposed image fusion algorithm, two or more source images are decomposed into subbands by DFT based digital filters. The detail and approximation subband coefficients are modified according to their magnitudes and mean values, respectively. Then, the modified subbands are combined in the subband domain. Finally, the fused image is obtained by the inverse transform.
