Osteoporosis is a complex multifactorial skeletal disease and has become a major socioeconomic issue, causing tremendous hospitalization and rehabilitation costs. In addition to age, premature menopause or the use of oral corticosteroids, vertebral fractures are regarded as main risk factors for developing osteoporosis and associated fractures. In this work, we adapt an existing automated pipeline to classify fracture grades of individual vertebrae and the spine as a whole: First, vertebral body centers were identified on CT images by a hierarchical neural network. Next, the fracture grades of individual vertebrae were processed by a multi-head, feed-forward convolutional neural network. The sum of the classified grades was then evaluated according to the German radiology guidelines. A hyperparameter search on validation data showed the most promising results for an output configuration based on three sequentially applied binary classification outputs trained using binary cross-entropy: Grade 0-1 vs 2-3, and 0 vs 1-3, and 0-2 vs 3. In a cross-validation setting on 159 low-dose CT images, our pipeline accurately classified patients to have sum-scores ≥ 2 with sensitivities and specificities of 90 % ± 5.0 % and 87 % ± 2.7 %, respectively. As our method was based on classifying individual vertebrae, we were able to provide both the fracture position and severity to enhance transparency, interpretability and usability. © 2023 SPIE.

In the peculiar realm of higher education, some of the challenges of Public Administration, in terms of quality assurance and data intelligence, can be addressed thanks to the complex ecosystem based on the careers of students and their engagement with the host academia. University governance, ranging from the university Rector and Quality Assurance committee to single heads of degree courses, needs to rely on quantitative and unbiased measures when designing and planning actions. This paper reports on an ongoing project started at Parma University in 2019, that has multiple goals: (1) to collect various sources of students' career-related raw data and to and provide simple access to aggregated analyses through a web portal;(2) to offer an AI based synthesis, in form of automatically generated reports in natural language;(3) to analyze data to detect and predict potential issues (e.g., students drop-out, classes attendance, graduation time estimations, blockages in the career) that can be promptly highlighted, for immediate intervention. As opposed to the majority of academic analytics implementations, particular care is devoted to minimizing ethics and privacy issues and adhering to explainable AI principles in the generation of synthetic explanations of charts and reports. Housing market is a complex structure and is being growing rapidly. The price of any property depends on various factors and to correctly predict the price is a challenging part to perform. This project aims to develop a model which accurately predicts the house prices with the use of machine learning techniques, using a detailed dataset containing various housing features such as location, facilities, environment etc. The methodology consists of data preprocessing, feature engineering and model selection to achieve optimizable outcome. Implementation has been done of algorithms namely Linear regression, decision trees to captured the complex relationships and patterns within the generated predictions. We investigate the relationship between various house attributes and their corresponding selling prices Building a model that can unambiguously estimate the fair market value in case of a house based on a set of relevant features. The training and testing procedures was conducted for accessing the robustness of the model. The outcome not only contains precise predictions but also insights of the housing market dynamics. This project contributes to informed decision-making process for buyers, sellers and real estate professionals too. © 2024 IEEE.

It's It's been so crucial lately to emphasize data security applying as the world depends on data exchange extensively almost in all domains. Steganography is one of the main techniques used to ensure information security in storage and during communication. We accomplish this novel technique by using two main layers. In the first layer, the secret message is compressed using Gzip or encrypted using Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). In the next layer, the binary representation of the secret message is embedded into vertices of x, y, and z-coordinates of the 3D object using the Gray code sequence, Recamán's sequence, and Lucas sequence. This binary representation of secret message is embedded using the Least Significant Bit (LSB) technique according to the value of the used sequence. Different performance measurements are computed and evaluated to ensure that the 3D object quality remains preserved such as Mean Square Error (MSE), Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR), embedding rate (ER), Normalized Hausdorff Distance (NHD) and maximum embedding capacity. The proposed scheme is compared with its counterparts in the literature. Outstanding numerical results are achieved, showing the superiority of the proposed schemes in the terms of performance, capacity, and security. © 2023 IEEE.

In the current scenario, large volumes of data are generated by different organizations. Data Mining (DM) applications provide suitable patterns that lead to business growth, improved health care and improved services to users etc. The Humongous data volumes may also contain some confidential information about individuals. So, this data may be exploited for identity theft, identity disclosure etc. In this situation, data mining methodologies that provide confidentiality are useful. Though Privacy-Preserving Data Mining (PPDM) methodologies like randomization, perturbation, anonymization etc., provide privacy, but when applied individually, they are ineffective. Henceforth, this article proposes a combination of these techniques called Boosted Hybrid Privacy Preserving Data Mining (BHPPDM). The proposed technique provides more privacy of data than the current methodologies whilst providing better classification accuracy as demonstrated by investigational results. © 2023 IEEE.

With the advancement of medical technology, the global population is aging and this is expected to increase the number of dementia patients. Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia and is a heterogeneous, neurodegenerative brain disorder. Due to the lack of a complete cure, early diagnosis is crucial to slow the progression of symptoms. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), an intermediate state between normal cognition (NC) and dementia, also necessitates early diagnosis because it can progress to AD. In reality, doctors diagnose AD stage by considering multiple types of data such as brain imaging, demographic information, genetic tests, and neuropsychological tests. Therefore, AD stage classification models need to learn these multimodal data. In this study, we proposed applying the graph convolutional network (GCN) to population graphs constructed by using cosine similarity, L1-norm, and L2-norm on multimodal data for AD stage classification. The multimodal data consisted of F -18 florbetaben (FBB) amyloid brain positron emission tomography (PET) images, demographic information, and genetic test, and neuropsychological test data. Different dimensional FBB PET images and non-image data were matched by using a multimodal fusion method utilizing a 3D dense convolutional network. The proposed methods are investigated through cross-validation with support vector machine, random forest, and multilayer percep- tron models. The results suggest that the L 1 -norm leads to better performance of GCN in AD stage classification due to its better robustness against outliers and its ability to account for the heterogeneity of AD compared to cosine similarity and L2 -norm. © 2024 IEEE.

The focus of this project will be to develop a general optimization framework for optimal investment portfolios within the proximal gradient method, a suitable algorithm to solve non-smooth constrained optimization problems efficiently. Using historical ADM, Amazon, Apple, and Cisco stock price data, among others, we can derive the optimal allocation of assets that serves to minimize the overall portfolio volatility. While cautiously pre-treating the data on all the stocks through return calculation, our methodology proceeded to use the proximal gradient method in weighing investment optimally, subject to some constraint. In this respect, with our methodology having been applied, the computational advantage and reduction in time usage did become relatively significant. The proximal operator is known to be very effective in dealing with all forms of constraints, be it budgetary, maximum and minimum investment bounds on each asset, or risk constraints, in providing an optimized solution to the dynamic nature of financial markets. © 2024 IEEE.

Internet of Things (IoT) networks are expected to be a key enabler technology for smart cities, due to their ability to offer real-time monitoring. In this work, we propose a novel medium access control (MAC) protocol, inspired by the synergy of slotted ALOHA and hybrid automatic repeat request with code combining (HARQ-CC), termed as code combining slotted ALOHA (CCSA), to improve the performance of IoT networks with multiple randomly deployed sensors. Specifically, we provide analytical closed-form expressions for the network's outage probability as well as for its average throughput when CCSA is applied. Finally, we provide simulation results that reveal the authenticity of the derived expressions and reveal the capabilities of HARQ-CC to significantly improve the network's performance when the sensors' access is based on a random access scheme. © 2023 IEEE.

We study the Capacitated Team Orienteering Problem, where a fleet of vehicles with capacities have to meet customers with known demands and prizes for a single commodity. The objective is to maximize the total prize and to assign a sequence of customers to each vehicle while keeping the total distance traveled within a given budget and such that the total demand served by each vehicle does not exceed its capacity. The problem has been widely studied both from a theoretical and a practical point of view. The contribution of this paper is twofold: (1) We advance the theoretical knowledge on the problem by providing new approximation algorithms that achieve, under some natural assumption, improved approximation ratios compared to the current best algorithms;(2) We propose four efficient heuristics that outperform the current state-of-the-art practical methods in the sense that they compute solutions that collect nearly the same prize in a significantly smaller running time. We also experimentally test the scalability of the new heuristics, showing that their running time increases approximately linearly with the size of the input, allowing us to process large graphs which were not possible to analyze before. © Gianlorenzo D’Angelo, Mattia D’Emidio, Esmaeil Delfaraz, and Gabriele Di Stefano.

In recent days, the escalating need to seamlessly transfer data traffic without discontinuities across the Internet network has exerted immense pressure on the capacity of these networks. Consequently, this surge in demand has resulted in the disruption of traffic flow continuity. Despite the emergence of intelligent networking technologies such as software-defined networking, network cloudification, and network function virtualization, they still need to improve their performance. Our proposal provides a novel solution to tackle traffic flow continuity by controlling the selected packet header bits (Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP)) that govern the traffic flow priority. By setting the DSCP bits, we can determine the appropriate precedence level for the data traffic flow. The control and modification of the DSCP bits directly impact the priority assigned to data packets, thereby shaping the traffic flow continuity accordingly. The evaluation and performance analysis of the proposed network were conducted using the Mininet simulator and the MATLAB platform. The outcomes of the comprehensive testing demonstrate that the implementation of our novel priority management technique has successfully reduced queuing delay and minimized packet loss. As a result, the overall data traffic continuity has been significantly enhanced. The obtained results demonstrate that the traffic flow continuity, handled by the Software-Defined Networking (SDN) controller with the support of DSCP modification, has increased by approximately 65% when implementing the proposed priority management based on DSCP bits modification in the SDN network. © 2024 IEEE.
