Considering that neither captology nor agent-orientation, are applied in medical informatics, as they could be, the paper presents a broad-spectrum gene-ric architectural framework to support developing adaptive medical applications, based on synergistic correlation between persuasive interfaces and intelligent agents. Their main features are adapted for medical informatics. Lying on this groundwork, the design space for agent-oriented persuasive applications is defined and several guidelines for its main dimensions are given. The approach is instantiated through an agent-based test-bench application, having the purpose to persuade to quit smoking.

Combining position and force control is highly desirable in many robot applications. Many years of extensive research has resulted in a number of promising control approaches, but often too much engineering effort is required in order to evaluate a low level (high performance) control scheme on a real manipulator. The new control system we have obtained has two main advantages: first it provides a total open control architecture, and second it is the simplicity and the interactivity of the platform developed. Using this new control architecture, any force and motion control strategy can be programmed and implemented in a graphical and easy way.

In this paper, a dynamic fuzzy approach is proposed for the selection of an evaluation function for a genetic algorithm (GA). The GA is in turn used to optimise a neural network (NN) architecture. A correctly classified pattern in the presence of error is considered for the fitness function. Fuzzy logic is used to dynamically select the chromosome for evolution. It gives a direction of evolution as well as provides more exploration among most desirable ones in the population, by dynamically changing the range of the membership function. To increase the resolution, different heights of the membership function with increasing heights towards more feasible features are considered. Modelling of a flexible manipulator is used to show the performance of the proposed approach. Results show that dynamic fuzzy logic performs better than fuzzy logic with fixed range and height.

The cell formation problem is a classic manufacturing optimisation problem associated with the implementation of a cellular manufacturing system. A variety of hierarchical clustering procedures have been proposed for the solution of this problem. Essential for the operation of a clustering procedure is the determination of a form of similarity between the objects that are going to be grouped. The authors employ a genetic programming algorithm for the evolution of new similarity coefficients for the solution of simple cell formation problems. Evolved coefficients are tested against the well-known Jaccard's similarity coefficient on a large number of problems taken from the literature.

Conventionally, passive filter design is very important to many power electronic circuits and power systems. For the design of these power electronic circuits and power systems, how to obtain accurate corner frequencies becomes a very important issue. It is known that when the load is large, the inductance for an inductor always changes. This is due to the fact that when the current load is high, the inductance always suffers from saturation or hysteresis. Because the inductance is nonlinear, it is very difficult to estimate the actual value for the nonlinear inductance during large current situations. In this paper, the authors explore the saturation phenomenon for a nonlinear inductance. With the describing function method, one can linearize the nonlinear inductor and then estimate the inductance during large current situations. Therefore, the bandwidth for low-pass, high-pass and notch filters can be also calculated very accurately. It can be found by the describing function method that when the current is very large, the corner frequencies or bandwidth frequencies will drift to a larger value in the low-pass filter. The drift value of bandwidth frequencies can be easily calculated by the describing function. This phenomenon can be verified by simulation and experimental results.

Traditional way of interconnection of industrial fieldbuses is used for data acquisition and operator control. This type of interconnection is not suitable for realtime control as it usually uses MS Windows based software gateways that are not capable of real-time processing of information. To assure real-time data transfer it is necessary to use different principle of interconnection. This new approach is based on hardware gateways. Hardware gateways can transfer data in predictable time. At present time hardware gateways are already used to interconnect fieldbuses of different level. Our paper presents that it is possible to use hardware gateways to interconnect fieldbuses of same level.
