The patient-clinician relationship is known to significantly affect the pain experience, as empathy, mutual trust and therapeutic alliance can significantly modulate pain perception and influence clinical therapy outcomes. The aim of the present study was to use an EEG hyperscanning setup to identify brain and behavioral mechanisms supporting the patient-clinician relationship while this clinical dyad is engaged in a therapeutic interaction. Our previous study applied fMRI hyperscanning to investigate whether brain concordance is linked with analgesia experienced by a patient while undergoing treatment by the clinician. In this current hyperscanning project we investigated similar outcomes for the patient-clinician dyad exploiting the high temporal resolution of EEG and the possibility to acquire the signals while patients and clinicians were present in the same room and engaged in a face-to-face interaction under an experimentally-controlled therapeutic context. Advanced source localization methods allowed for integration of spatial and spectral information in order to assess brain correlates of therapeutic alliance and pain perception in different clinical interaction contexts. Preliminary results showed that both behavioral and brain responses across the patient-clinician dyad were significantly affected by the interaction *** Relevance- The context of a clinical intervention can significantly impact the treatment of chronic pain. Effective therapeutic alliance, based on empathy, mutual trust, and warmth can improve treatment adherence and clinical outcomes. A deeper scientific understanding of the brain and behavioral mechanisms underlying an optimal patient-clinician interaction may lead to improved quality of clinical care and physician training, as well as better understanding of the social aspects of the biopsychosocial model mediating analgesia in chronic pain patients.

Respiratory patterns present great variability, both in healthy subjects and in patients with different diseases and forms of nasal, oral, superficial or deep breathing. The analysis of this variability depends, among others, on the device used to record the signals that describe these patterns. In this study, we propose multivariable regression models to estimate tidal volume (V T ) considering different breathing patterns. Twenty-three healthy volunteers underwent continuous multisensor recordings considering different modes of breathing. Respiratory flow and volume signals were recorded with a pneumotachograph and thoracic and abdominal respiratory inductive plethysmographic bands. Several respiratory parameters were extracted from the volume signals, such as inspiratory and expiratory areas (Area ins , Area exp ), maximum volume relative to the cycle start and end (VT ins , VT exp ), inspiratory and expiratory time (T ins , T exp ), cycle duration (T tot ), and normalized parameters of clinical interest. The parameters with the greatest individual predictive power were combined using multivariable models to estimate V T . Their performance were quantified in terms of determination coefficient (R 2 ), relative error (E R ) and interquartile range (IQR). Using only three parameters, the results obtained for the thoracic band (VT exp , T tot , Area exp ) were better than those obtained from the abdominal band (VT exp , T ins , Area ins ) with R 2 = 0.94 (IQR: 0.07); E R = 6.99 (IQR: 6.12) vs R 2 = 0.91 (IQR: 0.09), E R = 8.70 (IQR: 4.62). Overall performance increased to R 2 = 0.97 (IQR: 0.02) and E R = 4.60 (IQR: 3.68) when parameters from the different bands were combined, further improving when was applied to segments with different inspiration–expiration patterns. In particular, the nose-nose E R = 1.39 (IQR: 0.73), nose-mouth E R = 2.11 (IQR: 1.23) and mouth-mouth E R = 2.29 (IQR: 1.44) patterns showed the best results compared to those obtained for b

The problem of the pricing equilibrium in multi-service priority-based networks isstudied by using Stackelberg game theory. Some concepts of the game theory were revisited first. Then, the existing results on two-user, twolevel Nash problem was reviewed briefly. Following this background, a new one-leader, two-level, two-user incentive Stackelberg strategy was derived and proved by employing the time delay involved.

Accurate monitoring of respiratory activity can lead to early identification and treatment of possible respiratory failure. However, spontaneous breathing can vary considerably. To quantify this variability, this study aimed at comparing the breathing pattern characteristics obtained from several recording sensors during different breathing types. Respiratory activity was recorded with a pneumotachograph and two inductive plethysmographic bands, thoracic and abdominal, in 23 healthy volunteers (age 21.5±1.2 years, 13 females). The subjects were asked to breathe at their natural rate, in successive stages: first freely, then through their nose, nose and mouth, mouth alone, and finally deep and shallow. Both band signals were compared to the pneumotach-derived (gold standard) volume signal. The time series of inspiratory and expiratory duration, total cycle duration and tidal volume were estimated from each of these signals, and also from the sum of the thoracic and abdominal bands. This composite signal showed the highest correlation with the volume signal for almost all subjects, and also had a significantly higher correlation with those obtained from the gold standard volume, compared to either band. In general, breathing parameters increased from basal to nose-mouth breathing, had a minimum in shallow breathing and a maximum in deep breathing. Women exhibited a significantly longer exhalation phase than men during deep breathing, in the combined bands and the gold standard volume. In conclusion, variations in respiratory cycle morphology in different breathing types can be well captured by the simple addition of abdominal and thoracic band *** Relevance— Breathing pattern variability can be identified by the combination of abdominal and thoracic bands.

Cooperative Mechanism of Supply Chain Under Asymmetric Information

The cooperative mechanism is one main issue in the decentralized supply chain system, especially in an asymmetric information structure. We analyze the non-cooperative game behavior of a 2-echelon distribution supply chain, compare the results with the system optimal solution, and give the supplier dominated cooperative mechanisms. We also analyze the validity of our contract under the asymmetric retailers' holding cost information and give some useful conclusions.

For patient well-being and also for cost efficiency, constantly improving the medical act is essential. All patients undergo a set of medical tests before going into surgery. In some cases, these tests have to be repeated in different hospitals due to the lack of a system that facilitates presenting and sharing patient's data. We present two e-Health solutions for hospitals and clinics in the medical data field. Our aim was to design and implement a unique system for medical data management. This system allows easy data transfer between medical facilities. It also improves the medical diagnostic and treatment process and it increases the quality of medical care. Also, it improves the communication between patients and physicians, decreases the duration and costs of hospitalization and improves the patient's quality of life. The second medical solution presented in this paper present the results of the medical tests directly to a screen in the operating room, further reducing the time a patient has to wait before going into surgery and also improving the medical act. Both medical solutions were tested in real-world scenarios with promising results.

Since IEC 61499 has reached the state of an international standard and a substantial body of research results exists the question of the authors as main intention for this paper was: Do the models of IEC 61499 solve all problems when thinking of usability and interoperability in heterogeneous system environments? The goal to control the dynamics of high-rise buildings either to ameliorate the damage or prevent their destruction when subject to an earthquake excitation has been subject of extensive research. All known control designs have advantages and disadvantages as well as operating limits. The application of sliding-mode control to controlling earthquake induced vibrations of a multi-story structural system as an active seismic compensation plus base isolation has been investigated. The performance has been compared to the one of traditional industrial controls, and relevant conclusions drawn. Simulation results, carried out using El Centro earthquake acceleration, have shown that the sliding mode control can decrease significantly displacements of the floors.

The direct calculation of the absorption coefficient spectra of various tissues from spectral measurements allowed to retrieve the contents of melanin and lipofuscin. In the rabbit brain cortex, 1.8 times higher melanin content is explained by the neuron degeneration process. Similar melanin and lipofuscin contents were found in the rabbit pancreas as a result of the tissue aging process. The conversion of 83 % of the melanin in the human normal kidney into lipofuscin in the cancer kidney indicates that lipofuscin can be considered a kidney cancer marker in humans.

The Electrical engineering undergraduate program of the Escola Politécnica of the Universidade de São Paulo has created an alternative innovative curriculum path for its freshmen students in 2024. The Competency-based Path emphasizes the development of competencies and skills for the unprecedented technological advancements that necessitate a holistic education for future electrical engineers, preparing them with practical skills for real-world challenges. The program was designed using an innovative methodology and centers around semester-long or year-long integrative projects. These projects bridge the gap between theory and practice, as students deal with real-world challenges while fostering social responsibility.
