Concentrating Photovoltaic (CPV) technology attempts to optimize the efficiency of solar energy production systems and models for determining the exact module performance are needed. In this paper, a CPV module is studied by means of atmospheric conditions obtained using an automatic test and measuring system. (CORBFN)-R-2, a cooperative-competitive algorithm for the design of radial basis neural networks, is adapted and applied to these data obtaining a model with a good level of accuracy on test data, improving the results obtained by other methods considered in the experimental comparison. These initial results are promising and the obtained model could be used to work out the maximum power at the CPV reporting conditions and to analyze the performance of the module under any conditions and at any moment.

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) resonators on Si have the potential to replace discrete L-C components in series resonant converters. With acoustic coupling rather than inductive coupling, these MEMS resonators achieve better electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance, and reduce size, weight and volume of the power converter. In this paper, ring shaped piezoelectric micro-resonators are presented. These resonators vibrate in contour mode achieving a low resonant frequency, thus implementation in power converter circuits is possible. COMSOL Multiphysics simulation results have been provided showing the mode of vibration at resonance. A CMOS compatible fabrication process has been proposed and implemented. In addition, the fabricated devices have been characterized and experimental results are detailed. Finally, a PSIM simulation of a series resonant inverter incorporating the equivalent electrical model of the resonator has been performed.

Common-mode voltages (CMVs) can lead to premature failure of the motor insulation system in medium-voltage (MV) current source drives. This paper proposes a novel space-vector modulation (SVM) based gating strategy that can significantly reduce the peak CMV by optimizing the switching sequences for MV current source converters (CSCs). In the proposed method, the switching sequence of one side of the CSC is fixed and the sequence of the other side is selected to produce the minimum peak CMV. The optimization process is based on the CMV calculation for all the possible switching sequence combinations. To validate the proposed concept, different SVM based control schemes for CSCs are investigated. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed concept. In addition, the proposed strategy can be easily implemented in software and requires no extra hardware. By using this method, the CMV stress of the motor is reduced significantly and the size/weight for the common-mode choke can also be reduced. © 2013 IEEE.

The modular multilevel converter (MMC) has several three-level flying capacitor (3L-FC) submodules in cascade. To balance the submodule capacitors voltage, this paper describes a dynamic voltage balancing algorithm based on the carrier phase shifted pulse width modulation (CPS-PWM) scheme. The submodules are controlled based on the instantaneous value of capacitor voltage and the direction of current. For the selection of the submodules, the maximum and minimum voltage submodule selection logics are designed. These voltage logics are generating an index number for each submodule based on the relative comparison of capacitors voltage. Finally the switching state of the submodules is generated by comparing the submodule index number with the dynamic reference index number. The performance of the proposed voltage balancing algorithm at different operating conditions is evaluated on 6kV/2MVA MMC system with the MATLAB simulation and the corresponding results are presented. In addition, the performance comparison of MMC with 3L-FC and conventional two-level half bridge (2L-HB) submodules is presented.

In this paper, we propose a method based on the SVM algorithm to recognize dynamic hand gestures. The information of motion trajectory is captured by a leap motion in three-dimension space. A new methodology of feature extracting is proposed to guarantee the length of samples being the same. The elements of feature vectors are ranged according to two different criteria: one is the amplitude of the variation of orientation angles, and the other criterion is the order of the appearance of features. Experimental results show that this method can classify the dynamic hand gestures effectively.

Real-time performance can be greatly improved, if the early recognition is implemented. In this paper, a dynamic hand gesture early recognition system is proposed. The system can recognize the gesture before it is completed. Our method is based on the Hidden Semi-Markov Models. Three-dimensional information of the gesture trajectory collected by leapmotion is the main data we used. Experiments on the dataset which we established demonstrate the effectiveness of our method.

This paper presents the age-group classification based on facial images. We perform agegroup classification by dividing ages into five age groups according to the lows of age growth. Features are extracted from face images through energy Active Appearance Model (AAM), which describe the shape and gray value variation of face images. Then, the faces are divided into small regions from which the LBP histograms are extracted and concatenated into a feature vector to be used as a face descriptor. Principle Component Analysis (PCA) is adopted to reduce the dimensions and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier with Gaussian Radian Basis Function (RBF) kernel is trained. Experimental results demonstrate that energy AAM can improve the performance of age estimation. © Sila Science.

We show a method to detect accurate 3D position of people from multiple views, regardless of the geometry of the ground. In our new method we search for intersections of 3D primitives (cones) to find positions of feet. The cones are computed by back-projecting ellipses covering feet in input images. Instead of computing complex intersection body, we use approximation to speed up intersection computing. We found that feet positions are determined accurately, and the height map of the ground can be reconstructed with small error. We compared our method to other multiview-detectors - using somewhat different test methodology -, and achieved comparable results, with the benefit of handling arbitrary ground. We also present accurately reconstructed height map of non-planar ground. Our algorithm is fast and most of steps are parallelizable, making it possibly available for smart camera systems.

In this paper, we propose a new reflectance separation model to separate the diffuse and specular reflection components. The model is based on a two-dimensional space called Ch-CV space, which is spanned by maximum chromaticity (Ch) and the coefficient of variation (CV) of RGB color. The space exhibits a more direct correspondence to diffuse and specular reflection components than the RGB color space, as well as the HSI color space. Under the whitened illumination, the surface points with the same diffuse chromaticity have the same slope in Ch-CV space. Based on these properties, we propose a slope-based region growing method to implement an image segmentation in the specular regions, and to separate the reflection components for each segmented region. The comparison experiments with several state-of-the-art algorithms show its superior capability to separate the specular and diffuse reflection components. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

In general, power converters are being operated in closed-loop systems, and any characteristic variations in one component will simultaneously alter the operating point of other components resulting in a shift in overall reliability profile. This interdependence makes the reliability of a converter a complex function of time and operating conditions;and therefore, the application may demand periodic replacement of converters to avoid downtime and maintenance cost. By knowing the present state of health and remaining life of a power converter, it is possible to reduce the maintenance cost for expensive high-power converters. This paper presents a reliability analysis for a boost converter although this method could be used to any power converter being operated in closed-loops. Through the conducted study it is revealed that the reliability of a boost converter with control loops degrades with time, and this paper presents a method to calculate time varying reliability of a boost converter as function of characteristic variations in different components in the circuit. In addition, the effects of operating and ambient conditions have been included in the reliability model as well. It was found that any increase in the ON-resistance of the MOSFET or equivalent series resistance (ESR) of the output capacitor decreases the overall reliability of the converter. However, any variation in the capacitance has more complex impact on the converter's reliability. This conducted research is a step forward to the power converter reliability analysis because the cumulative effect of multiple degraded components has been considered in the reliability model.
