Video is a complex information space that requires advanced navigational aids for effective browsing. The increasing number of temporal video annotations offers new opportunities to provide video navigation according to a user's needs. We present a novel video browsing interface called TAV (Temporal Annotation Viewing) that provides the user with a visual overview of temporal video annotations. TAV enables the user to quickly determine the general content of a video, the location of scenes of interest and the type of annotations that are displayed while watching the video. An ongoing user study will evaluate our novel approach.

This study develops and implements a SoC-based HW/SW (Hardware-Software) codesign for an intelligent diagnostic system. To improve the efficiency of the VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) design process, the components of the intelligent diagnostic system are designed in the form of SIP (Silicon Intellectual Property) modules. The SIP modules, including the CPU module, the GPIO (General Purpose I/O) module and the NN (Neural Network) module, are then integrated to form the complete intelligent diagnostic system. In constructing the system, an embedded processor is employed to run software programs. In addition to integrating the hardware architecture, this study also develops application software, comprising a bootloader, a UARTcomm module and a main program for human machine interface, to drive the embedded processor. The SoC-based HW/SW codesign method employed in this study increases the efficiency of the system design process and reduces the rebuild time. The results of the experimental trials verify the successful performance of the developed intelligent diagnostic system. © 2010 IEEE.

A model predictive controller (MPC) for transformless shunt hybrid power filters (SHPF) is proposed in this paper to compensate the harmonics generated by nonlinear load. In the proposed MPC, discrete time model of SHPF is employed to predict the next current values for all possible space vectors. The vector which minimizes a cost function is selected as the next switching vector. The steady-state and dynamic performances of MPC with different types of nonlinear loads are verified with simulation results. The traditional MPC has good robustness to the parameter deviations of resistance and inductance but sensitive to the capacitance. In this paper, the robustness is highly improved with additional capacitor voltage detections. © 2010 IEEE.

Several games nowadays try to improve the player immersion by representing human behavior as real as possible, generally using agent technologies to model non-player characters (NPCs). However, agent-based behavioral models representing the existing complexity of, for instance, a decision-making for a real life situation can become a very intensive computing task. For this reason, real-time simulationbased games may benefit from optimizations produced on how NPCs react to changes in the simulated game world. This paper presents an approach for speeding up the decision-making of autonomous agents representing NPCs of a game. The optimization is reached by bounding the agent perception to a subset of all agent surrounding elements, which contains only the most important elements for the agent at current time. In other words, the agent is modeled as having \focus of attention". The attention focus represented in this work is based on theories of emotions and personality. © 2010 IEEE.

In this work, the off-line approximation of state-feedback nonlinear model predictive control laws by means of smooth functions of the state is addressed. The idea is to investigate how the approximation errors affect the stability of the closed-loop system, in order to derive suitable bounds which have to be fulfilled by the approximating function. This analysis allows to conveniently set up the characteristic parameters of some techniques such as Neural Networks which can be used to implement the control law, in order to render the system Input-to-State Practically Stable while satisfying, in addition, hard constraints on the trajectories;both the amount of data storage and the computational time result strongly reduced with respect to Nearest Neighbor or Set Membership approaches, which have been recently proposed to obtain effective off-line approximation of nonlinear MPC. The provided simulations confirm the validity of the method. © 2010 AACC.

A knowledge management system is more than an archive of textual documents;it provides context information, allowing to know which documents where used by people with a common goal. In the hypothesis that a set of textual documents with a common context can be assimilated to the long term memory of a human expert executor, we can use on them mining techniques inspired by the mechanic of human comprehension in expert domains. Text mining techniques for KM task can use a model of the long-term memory to extract meaningful keywords from the documents. The model acts as a dynamic and non-stationary dimensionality reduction strategy, allowing the clustering of context documents according to keyword presence, the classification of external documents according to local criteria, and a better understanding of document content and relatedness.

Recognizing faces from face detector outputs is a hard problem. While existing face recognition (FR) techniques essentially work on pre-processed (cropped and aligned) data, we employ Gabor-based covariance descriptors for recognition from free-form faces (raw face detector outputs). Our recognition algorithm employs a Principal Geodesic Analysis (PGA) of Covariance Descriptors, followed by a transformation on to tangent space where faces are sparsely represented. Employing the kernel trick on this sparse feature space enables upto 10% improvement in recognition accuracy. © 2010 ACM.

The paper gives an original combination of linear quadratic regulator and reinforcement learning dedicated to the position control of a double inverted pendulum system. An agent based on a modified Sarsa algorithm is applied to swing up the pendulum. The linear quadratic regulator is applied to the linearized mathematical model of the process in the vicinity of upright position. Digital simulation results show the performance of the new approach. © 2010 IEEE.

Constant power control technology is one of the key technologies in wind power control. PI control is the most widely used technology in constant power control system. Hysteresis of PI control will cause a large overshoot of the output power that will make interference to the power grid. Feedforward control system can reduce the system lag. The fuzzy controller based on T-S model can overcome the influence caused by non-linear and uncertain mathematical model of the system. The fuzzy controller makes the feedforward controller easy to realize. Introducing neural network training method into Fuzzy control will greatly simplify the design of fuzzy controller. Based on Neural Adaptive - Fuzzy technology, a feed forward system is proposed in this paper, which is able to timely adjust pitch angle according to changes of wind speed. At last, the control strategy is simulated by MATLAB. The simulation results show that the method greatly improves the performance of system dynamic response, thus ensuring a constant power output. © 2010 IEEE.
