The lungs' abnormal cell growth leads to the development of lung cancer. Early cancer identification could make treatment easier, potentially saving millions of lives annually. This study's main goal is to more rapidly and effectively classify various types of lung cancer by employing a lightweight, computationally efficient convolutional neural network (CNN) model to categorize three different types of lung cancer. With an outstanding validation accuracy of 99.48%, the suggested model surpasses the achievements of previous works. The 15,000 CT scan images in our dataset include three different forms of lung cancer. The proposed model performs exceptionally well, as evidenced by its astounding precision, recall, and F1-score, all above 99%, and by its flawless Area Under Curve (AUC) score of 100%. The proposed model has fewer parameters than the existing transfer learning models. Gradient Weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) was used to create class activation maps, which were then used to create a heatmap to display the classification zone. © 2023 IEEE.

Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) that can dynamically control the phase of radio waves and reflect them are attracting attention to realize non line-of-sight communication in the high-frequency band. Channel state information (CSI) is estimated to properly control the phase, however the overhead of the estimation reduces communication efficiency. To reduce the overhead, IRS systems with active elements that perform channel estimation are considered. One approach treats the partial CSI obtained from the active elements as an image and utilizes a super-resolution technique to predict the entire CSI. However, because the active elements are arranged in grid, prediction is difficult when the active elements spacing and the CSI fluctuation period match. In this study, we propose a new arrangement that gathers the active elements in the center of the IRS. Furthermore, we regard prediction as an image-inpainting problem that recovers missing pixels from known pixel values, and we propose applying the U-Net to solve this problem. Numerical experiments show that the proposed method outperforms conventional methods in prediction accuracy and spectral efficiency. © 2024 IEEE.

In this work, we classified the wireless internet of things (IoT) traffic of the IoT Health intensive care unit (IHI) dataset which belongs to three general classes: patient monitoring, environment monitoring, and network attack. We trained and tested 7 machine learning (ML) models with Orange 3 including kNN, Decision Tree (tree), SVM, Random Forest (RF), Neural Network (NN), Gradient Boosting (GB), and AdaBoost (AB). With the original dataset, 5 ML models performed perfect classification. After pruning the dataset columns by keeping the features with the highest correlations with the label in the dataset, good classifications were obtained with only 4 TCP/IP features by the Gradient Boosting, kNN, and RF models with MSEs in the range 0.008-0.011, and R2s in the range 0.978-0.984. With only 6 MQTT features, Gradient Boosting, RF, Tree, and NN were the top classifiers with MSEs in the range 0.073-0.074, and R2s in the range 0.856-0.859. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of guiding the feature pruning process by the values of the correlation coefficients in order to minimize the long training times of ML models while achieving good accuracies. © 2024 The Authors. Deep learning models have been applied in various fields and continue producing exceptional results. However, these models are vulnerable to adversarial attacks, which are modified data samples maliciously crafted to cause misclassification by a target model. Fields like Network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) are security-critical;therefore, adversarial attacks pose a high risk in such applications. The attacker not only aims for evasion but also tries to launch an attack once the adversarial example has evaded detection by a NIDS. This paper presents a novel technique for detecting adversarial examples targeted towards a NIDS by learning the dependencies between features known as domain constraints. Our proposed method detects adversarial examples that violate these constraints learned during training. Compared with prevalent detection techniques, our method does not require generating adversarial examples for training, which reduces its computational requirement. We assume a grey-box threat model where the attacker can access the training data. We perform experiments on the CICIDS2017 dataset against five state-of-the-art adversarial attacks: FGSM, BIM, PGD, Deep fool and BIM. The results show that our method can detect up to 100% adversarial attacks, outperforming the contemporary schemes. © 2024 IEEE.

Recommender systems enhance the user experience by integrating factual and behavioral practices, enhancing learning strategies, and granting academic opportunities based on learners subjective interests. Cognitive intelligence, a learner's capability to interpret and synthesize cognitive abilities, is crucial to assemble effective recommendations. However, a student encounters diverse adversities in his or her academic life, whether it is his or her academic pacers or outward circumstances. As a result, a learner consequently experienced severe academic setbacks. Thus, this paper proposes a novel approach to identify cognitive deficits of learners in a school or college before recommending any scholastic content or pertaining in any academic activity. We have employed a modified Bi-directional Gated Recurrent Unit (Bi-GRU) method in conjunction with Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm (SFLA). Our approach overcomes some of the shortcomings of conventional Bi-GRU method in choosing the right scaling parameters during training. Bi-GRU method is opted for detecting the cognitive deficits of a learner and SFLA is applied over Bi-GRU in order to hyper-Tune the parameters. The proposed method is compared with a few cutting-edge methods, and the experimental result outperforms the other methods in training, validation, and testing accuracies, achieving 99.34%, 98.98%, and 99.19% respectively. © 2024 IEEE.

In recent years, the process humans adopt to learn a foreign language has moved from the strict "Grammar -Translation"method, which is based mainly on grammar and syntax rules, to more innovative processes, resulting to the more modern "Communicative approach". As its name states, this approach focuses on the coherent communication with native speakers and the cultivation of oral skills, without taking into consideration, at least at the first stages, the rules that govern the language. The same trend seems to have been applied to the way machinery can be "educated"to comprehend and reproduce the unfamiliar, human language. The "rule based"Natural Language Generation (NLG) and Natural Language Understanding (NLU) algorithms, on one hand, and the "text based"Large Language Models (LLMs), on the other, are two, analogous to the two human foreign language learning processes, subareas of Natural Language Processing (NLP). This paper presents these two alternative approaches, LLMs (a technology having surfaced as an influential catalyst of NLP, during last years) on the one hand and NLG/NLU on the other, highlighting their applications, their technologies, their capabilities, their differences, their strengths and weaknesses and the challenges they present, contributing to a deeper comprehension of the evolving landscape of Artificial Intelligence and human-computer communication. © 2023 Owner/Author.

Metamaterial absorbers are an advancement in material science as they provide more advantages in comparison to conventional materials. Achieving miniaturization with a multilayered structure is the primary challenge here. In this study, a novel metamaterial absorber design is proposed for microwave application. The proposed design is shaped as a squad of four segments where each segment contains an octagonal split ring and a central ring. The multi-layered design of the absorber helps to secure a high absorption rate. An extensive range of research is done to determine particular measurement units, and geometric shapes with the help of CST Studio Suit 2019. Here both ground and patch are designed using copper and the separator is designed with Roger. Moreover, the thickness of the absorber is only 3.4 mm which ensures its ultra-thin and lightweight nature. With an elaborated numerical analysis, it has been shown that the proposed absorber provides 90% to 99% absorption at the C, X, and K bands. Moreover, a concise computational analysis is accomplished with FR4 lossy, Rogers RT6010LM lossy, and Rogers RT5870LM lossy as dielectric constant. The key contribution of this research is the high absorption rate, coupled with minimal thickness and simple structure. © 2024 IEEE.

Optical Head-Mounted Displays (OHMDs) allow users to read digital content while walking. A better understanding of how users allocate attention between these two tasks is crucial for improving OHMD interfaces. This paper introduces a computational model for simulating users' attention switches between reading and walking. We model users' decision to deploy visual attention as a hierarchical reinforcement learning problem, wherein a supervisory controller optimizes attention allocation while considering both reading activity and walking safety. Our model simulates the control of eye movements and locomotion as an adaptation to the given task priority, design of digital content, and walking speed. The model replicates key multitasking behaviors during OHMD reading while walking, including attention switches, changes in reading and walking speeds, and reading resumptions. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s)

Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces (IRS) is attracting attention for wireless communications at high-frequency band. IRS can control radio propagation by reflecting radio waves and shifting their phase. As one of the methods to control IRS, location-based methods have been proposed. However, to achieve highly accurate IRS control by the methods, the assumed propagation model must match the actual propagation environment. This study proposes a method to control the IRS from location information adapted to the propagation environment by using machine learning. Numerical experiments confirm that the proposed method can appropriately control IRS regardless of the propagation environment. © 2024 IEEE.

Multispectral satellite image classification is crucial in remote sensing and image analysis, serving various applications like water area extraction, urban region classification, and vegetation monitoring. Model-based classification, particularly supervised learning approaches, heavily relies on manually annotated training samples, which are labor-intensive and subject to human bias. However, solely depending on features derived from individual pixels may fail to capture spatial contextual information effectively and manage mixed pixels and various types of noise, resulting in classification inaccuracies. To address these challenges, this research proposes a novel unsupervised learning approach and automatic labeling technique (ALT). This approach utilizes collective information from groups of pixels instead of relying solely on individual pixels for identification and extraction of meaningful unique patterns which serves as the most significant factor for satellite image classification. A new similarity index, the patch similarity index (PSI), is generated by incorporating the rank correlation similarity index (RCSI). The PSI is used to determine the similarity factor both between the patches and within the patch. Subsequently, a clustering algorithm is employed to group pixels into four distinct classes: vegetation, water, built-ups, and open land. Additionally, ALT streamlines the post-classification process by reducing the need for manual intervention in mapping clusters to the actual class label. The proposed method offers a more accurate and reliable unsupervised classification for multispectral satellite imagery, promising enhanced efficiency and reduced manual labor. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.
