This research project was developed to investigate potential differences between Amplitude Modulated (AM) and Frequency Modulated (FM) screening of multicolor (CMYK) digital printing. The study examined the attributes of print contrast, dot gain, gray balance and color variation and how they may vary based on the screening method used. The experiment was conducted in a color managed digital printing workflow. Color differences were identified in print samples of AM vs. FM screening. Methods used to measure print attributes are detailed, and data was collected, graphed and analyzed. The study shows that measurable differences do exist and that visual changes in color can occur based on the screening method employed. A custom target was printed on the Konica-Minolta C6000 bizHub digital color press using Creo's AM and FM screening technologies. A pilot test was conducted to achieve the target toner density values (+/-0.10) according to in-house standards. During the pilot test, 200 sheets were printed. Once density values were achieved, the digital press was run continuously without operator interference and another 200 sheets were printed (100 sheets for each screening option), from which a total of 160 sheets were randomly selected (80 sheets for each screening option) for the densitometric and colorimetric analysis. Only attributes that measured patches made up of dots or screened tint percentages were used to compare the two screening technologies. Print attributes that utilize solid patches only were not compared. The findings of this study represent specific printing or testing conditions. The findings of this research led to the conclusion that FM screening provides greater print contrast than AM screening. The findings make it difficult to draw conclusions regarding dot gain. Further study is needed to attempt greater control of variables.

Interactive music retrieval systems using microphone input have become popular, with applications ranging from whistle queries to robust audio search engines capable of retrieving music from a short sample recorded in noisy environment. The availability for mobile devices brought them to millions of users. Underlying methods have promising results in the case that user provides a short recorded sample and seeks additional information about the piece. Now, the focus needs to be switched to areas where we are still unable to satisfy the user needs. Such a scenario can be the choice of a favorite music performance from the set of covers, or recordings of the same musical piece, e.g. in classical music. Various algorithms have been proposed for both basic retrieval and more advanced use cases. In this paper we provide a survey of the state-of-the-art methods for interactive music retrieval systems, from the perspective of specific user requirements.

Problems and the calculation of trajectory sensitivities for on-board stability analysis as well as real-time optimal control are explained. Bringing cognitive autonomy to a spacecraft requires an on-board computational module as a central spacecraft component. This module is responsible for state evaluation, mission planning and decision-making regarding selection of potential targets, trajectory selection and FD1R. A knowledge-base serves as a database for decision making processes. With the aim to validate and test our methods, we create a virtual environment in which humans can interact with the simulation of the mission. In order to achieve real-time performance, we propose a massively-parallel software system architecture, which enables very efficient and easily adaptable communication between concurrent software modules within KaNaRiA.,With the rapid evolution of space technologies and increasing thirst for knowledge about the origin of life and the universe, the need for deep space missions as well as for autonomous solutions for complex, time-critical mission operations becomes urgent. Within this context, the project KaNaRiA aims at technology development tailored to the ambitious task of space resource mining on small planetary bodies using increased autonomy for on-board mission planning, navigation and guidance. This paper focuses on the specific challenges as well as first solutions and results corresponding to the KaNaRiA mission phases (1) interplanetary cruise, (2) target identification and characterization and (3) proximity operations. Based on the KaNaRiA asteroid mining mission objectives, initially, a mission reference scenario as well as a reference mission architecture are described in this paper. KaNaRiA has been proposed as a multi-spacecraft mission to the asteroid main belt. Automated multi-contrast brain pathological area extraction from 2D MR images

The aim of this work is to propose the fully automated pathological area extraction from multi-parametric 2D MR images of brain. The proposed method is based on multi-resolution symmetry analysis and automatic thresholding. The proposed algorithm first detects the presence of pathology and then starts its extraction. T2 images are used for the presence detection and the multi-contrast MRI is used for the extraction, concretely T2 and FLAIR images. The extraction is based on thresholding, where Otsu's algorithm is used for the automatic determination of the threshold. Since the method is based on symmetry, it works for both axial and coronal planes. In both these planes of healthy brain, the approximate left-right symmetry exists and it is used as the prior knowledge for searching the approximate pathology location. It is assumed that this area is not located symmetrically in both hemispheres, which is met in most cases. The detection algorithm was tested on 203 T2-weighted images and reached the true positive rate of 87.52% and true negative rate of 93.14%. The extraction algorithm was tested on 357 axial and 443 coronal real images from publicly available BRATS databases containing 3D volumes brain tumor patients. The results were evaluated by Dice Coefficient (axial: 0.85 ± 0.11, coronal 0.82 ± 0.18) and by Accuracy (axial: 0.96 ± 0.05, coronal 0.94 ± 0.09). © 2015 Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.

With the advent and accelerated development of augmented reality (AR), an increasing number of studies have been conducted to test the effectiveness of this technique in education. Few, however, have investigated how AR might influence students' motivation toward learning of a second language. To address this gap in the literature, we used a combination of convenience sampling and criterion sampling to select five Chinese college students to evaluate an English vocabulary learning application built upon augmented reality technology. To assess student motivation, the ARCS motivational model was adopted. A semi-structured interview with openended questions was used to collect data. Participants indicated that though they were attracted by this tool at the beginning, their motivation level decreased toward the end of the study session. An interpretation of our observations in the context of the ARCS model suggests three motivational issues. First, predefined AR materials failed to establish relevance to subjects' personal interests and previous experiences. Secondly, subjects' confidence seemed to have been negatively influenced due to their difficulty in achieving the stated learning objectives. Lastly, technical issues delayed the computer quickly identifying the triggering image and thus resulted in a noticeable lack of system responsiveness. It seems this delay decreased subjects' satisfaction and distracted their attention from the learning task. These factors seemed most determinative in compromising AR's effectiveness as a tool to increase student motivation toward English vocabulary learning. It must be stressed that this study is a low subject N exploratory pilot not intended to produce binding generalizations. Nonetheless, these findings should provide useful insights toward the successful application of AR in the educational realm and identify potential causal factors that could form the foundation of future experimental research. In this contribution, we present a semi-automatic segmentation algorithm for radiofrequency ablation (RFA) zones via optimal s-t-cuts. Our interactive graph-based approach builds upon a polyhedron to construct the graph and was specifically designed for computed tomography (CT) acquisitions from patients that had RFA treatments of Hepatocellular Carcinomas (HCC). For evaluation, we used twelve post-interventional CT datasets from the clinical routine and as evaluation metric we utilized the Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC), which is commonly accepted for judging computer aided medical segmentation tasks. Compared with pure manual slice-by-slice expert segmentations from interventional radiologists, we were able to achieve a DSC of about eighty percent, which is sufficient for our clinical needs. Moreover, our approach was able to handle images containing (DSC=75.9%) and not containing (78.1%) the RFA needles still in place. Additionally, we found no statistically significant difference (p<0.423) between the segmentation results of the subgroups for a Mann-Whitney test. Finally, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first time a segmentation approach for CT scans including the RFA needles is reported and we show why another state-of-the-art segmentation method fails for these cases. Intraoperative scans including an RFA probe are very critical in the clinical practice and need a very careful segmentation and inspection to avoid under-treatment, which may result in tumor recurrence (up to 40%). If the decision can be made during the intervention, an additional ablation can be performed without removing the entire needle. This decreases the patient stress and associated risks and costs of a separate intervention at a later date. Ultimately, the segmented ablation zone containing the RFA needle can be used for a precise ablation simulation as the real needle position is known.

This paper presents ongoing research aimed at improving building sustainability education through the use of serious games. With the growth of the population worldwide and the increased demand on resources, there has been a growing emphasis on sustainable buildings. As architects, engineers and construction professionals are educated for the future, the complex area of building sustainability must be included in the curriculum;however, the literature shows no clear consensus on teaching methods or curriculum design. Growing evidence suggests that computer games could be effective tools in construction education as they can provide students with both theoretical and applied knowledge. In this paper we describe the development and initial evaluation of a serious game for learning sustainable building design principles and practices. The game is aimed at undergraduate students enrolled in Civil Engineering, Architecture and Building Construction Management programs. Findings from a formative study with 17 students and three faculty show that the game was perceived as usable, engaging and useful for learning/teaching building sustainability. Results of a summative study with 42 undergraduate students show that playing the game led to an increase in subjects' declarative knowledge by 22% and procedural knowledge by 37%. Compared with traditional learning methods, playing the game led to significantly higher procedural knowledge gains, whereas gains in declarative knowledge were not significantly higher. © 2014 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Safety and health issues are important components for any industry that involves machinery operations. To control various hazards leading to occupational injuries and illnesses, one common method is safety training and education. In this study, we developed a 3D virtual reality game to enhance safety training and education. Based on the recommendations from industrial partners, a pedestal grinder and its operation were selected for this study. The pedestal grinder and the mechanical laboratory were converted to three dimensional shapes using 3D modeling software. The completed 3D models were brought into the game engine to replicate actual laboratory environment. This allows students to interact within the virtual environment and be able to operate the virtual pedestal grinder safely. The interactivity between a user and the equipment within 3D virtual environment was implemented using visual programming tool inside the game engine. A pilot study was conducted to assess the students' learning with regard to the pedestal grinder safety using three groups: lecture only, lecture with physical laboratory, and lecture with the developed 3D virtual environment. The results indicated the benefits of 3D virtual reality game over “lecture only” delivery method in enhancing students' learning. Furthermore, virtual reality game allows students to retain information as good as the “lecture with physical laboratory” delivery method.

Music information retrieval (MIR) is small, but fast growing discipline. It aims at extraction of relevant information from music in order to improve the work with multimedia information systems. A popular approach in MIR is to apply signal processing techniques to extract low-level features from a musical piece. However, in order to create helpful applications, high-level concepts, such as music harmony, need to be examined as well. In this paper, we present a new model for understanding music harmony in computer systems. The proposed model takes the challenge of filling the gap between music theory and mathematical structures. Inspired by the computational complexity, we then derive a new term, harmonic complexity, that can be evaluated for a musical piece, and we test it on a genre classification problem.

Poisson disk sampling has been widely used in many applications such as remeshing, procedural texturing, object distribution, illumination, etc. While 2D Poisson disk sampling is intensively studied in recent years, direct Poisson disk sampling on 2-manifold surface is rarely covered. In this paper, we present a novel framework which generates approximate Poisson disk distribution directly on mesh, a discrete representation of 2-manifold surfaces. Our framework is easy to implement and provides extra flexibility to specified sampling issues like feature-preserving sampling and adaptive sampling. We integrate the tensor voting method into feature detection and adaptive sample radius calculation. Remeshing as a special downstream application is also addressed. According to our experiment results, our framework is efficient, robust, and widely applicable.
