This work considers the problem of metamorphosis interpolation between two freeform planar curves. Given two planar parametric curves, the curvature signature of the two curves is linearly blended, yielding a gradual change that is not only smooth but also employs intrinsic curvature shape properties, and hence is highly appealing. In order to be able to employ this curvature blending, we present a constructive scheme to derive curvature signatures of parameter curves. Additionally, we propose a scheme to reconstruct a curve from its curvature signature.

Mobile agent security is still a young discipline and most naturally, the focus up to the time of writing was on inventing new cryptographic protocols for securing various aspects of mobile agents. However, past experience shows that protocols can be flawed, and flaws in protocols can remain unnoticed for a long period of time. The game of breaking and fixing protocols is a necessary evolutionary process that leads to a better understanding of the underlying problems and ultimately to more robust and secure systems. Although, to the best of our knowledge, little work has been published on breaking protocols for mobile agents, it is inconceivable that the multitude of protocols proposed so far are all flawless. As it turns out, the opposite is true. We identify flaws in protocols proposed by Corradi et al ., Karjoth et al ., and Karnik et al ., including protocols based on secure coprocessors. Additionally, we propose how the protocols can be strengthened against the types of attacks we launch against them.

Three new faculty members team up to relate their experiences moving from industry to academia. Major topics include teaching, laboratory development, service, publishing, and the balancing of time among these areas. The teaching area includes incorporating industrial experiences into classroom preparation and making the transition from industrial presentations to academic teaching. Bloom's taxonomy is used to prepare for teaching and also to assess learning. Laboratory development includes making that first contact with prospective industrial partners and writing a grant proposal. The service area includes not just the committee work upon which academia thrives, but also outreach activities to the community. This outreach includes both working as a consultant and reaching out to possible new students. Publishing includes the research and preparation of a first paper for conference presentation along with the relative worth of different venues for a published paper. Finally, the fourth member of the team, one who made the move from industry eight years ago, describes how to put these activities into a winning promotion and tenure document. Insights are given into the promotion and tenure process and the various committees that are involved in this process. This document and process are important because it is necessary to not only to become active in all the areas listed above, but also to document these activities in order to achieve tenure and stay in academia.

The draft international standard ITU-T H.263 is closely related to the well known and widely used ITU-T Recommendation H.261. However, H.263 does provide the same subjective image quality at less than half the bit-rate. In this paper we investigate to what extend single enhancements of H.263 contribute to this performance gain, and consider the trade-off quality vs. complexity. Based on typical test sequences, H.263 with its various modes is compared to H.261 on the basis of rate distortion curves at bit-rates up to 128 kbps. At 64 kbps, the performance gain of H.263 in its default mode compared to H.261 is approximately 2 dB. This improvement is achieved with only little increase of complexity, and is mainly due to more accurate motion compensation with half-pel accuracy. Considering the trade-off quality vs. complexity, the combination of the optional coding-modes "Advanced prediction mode" and "PB-frames mode" is a good compromise, resulting in an additional performance gain of 1.5 dB PSNR at 64 kbps. The "Syntax-based arithmetic coding mode" on the other hand, offers only a very small performance gain (0.1 dB at 64 kbps) for its increased computational complexity. Results from profiling an H.263 software codec are presented in order to support complexity considerations of the optional coding-modes.
