User interface features of a touch based mobile music player and their comparative impact on driver distraction when searching music albums were investigated. In a driving simulator experiment (N=18) three scrolling methods buttons, swipe and kinetic were compared, whereat the number of music tracks presented in a list-style format varied between three, five and seven items per page. Half of the participants used the music player in a portrait mode and half of them in a landscape mode. It was expected that swipe supports less severe distraction effects than kinetic or button due to systematic page-by-page scrolling and low levels of pointing accuracy required for browsing. Three items should enable more efficient visual sampling efficiency per page, but visual demands are increased compared to five or seven since more scrolling is required. Screen orientation should have no distraction effects. Results indicate that swipe led to less severe distraction effects than buttons or kinetic scrolling methods. Seven items per page was found most distracting, whereas few significant differences were found between three and five. As predicted, screen orientation had no significant effects. A cache approach towards web-based interactive large-scale terrain rendering

We propose a novel method for web-based rendering of highly detailed 3D terrains. The proposed method relies on the server to provide rendering results directly for the clients. In order to achieve an interactive frame rate at the client and to reduce the workload of the server, a client side cache system is designed to reconstruct in-between screen shots from previous rendering results sparsely provided by the server, which are in the form of color images and dept. maps (to be referred to as Terrain Instance Map, or TIM, in the paper). The cache system is designed to reuse TIMs as much as possible based on a series of view point analysis, screen coverage checking and effective resolution calculation on both CPU and GPU. The characteristics of our method include: quick full-detail view, high quality screen shots throughout the session, highly scalable, and it has little requirement on the rendering algorithm or data structure used at the server, safety for terrain data. We present a novel graph-based framework for timeline summarization, the task of creating different summaries for different timestamps but for the same topic. Our work extends timeline summarization to a multimodal setting and creates timelines that are both textual and visual. Our approach exploits the fact that news documents are often accompanied by pictures and the two share some common content. Our model optimizes local summary creation and global timeline generation jointly following an iterative approach based on mutual reinforcement and co-ranking. In our algorithm, individual summaries are generated by taking into account the mutual dependencies between sentences and images, and are iteratively refined by considering how they contribute to the global timeline and its coherence. Experiments on real-world datasets show that the timelines produced by our model outperform several competitive baselines both in terms of ROUGE and when assessed by human evaluators. © 2012 ACM.

This paper proposes a Topic-Level Opinion Influence Model (TOIM) that simultaneously incorporates topic factor, user opinions and social influence in a unified probabilistic model with two stages learning processes. In the first stage, topic factor and user influence are integrated to generate users' influential relationship based on different topics;in the second stage, users' historical messages and social interaction records are leveraged by TOIM to construct their historical opinions and neighbors' opinion influence through a statistical learning process, which can be further utilized to predict users' future opinions on some specific topics. We evaluate our TOIM on a large-scaled dataset from Tencent Weibo, one of the largest microbloggings website in China. The experimental results show that TOIM can better predict users' opinion than other baseline methods. © 2012 ACM.

The modeling of energy storage devices such as supercapacitors for wireless sensor networks is important for assessing performance of harvesting-aware routing protocols that could be key to a green energy future. In this paper, we present a circuit-based model (CBM), which is a good fit to the empirical data available in the existing literature. We compare it with a linear energy model (LEM) that is often used in literature, and show that the choice of models implies a significant difference in the throughput per node.

N-SA K-anonymity Model: A Model Exclusive of Tuple Suppression Technique is used to protect released data which contains multiple sensitive attributes. On the basis of K-anonymity model sensitive information cannot be distinguished from at least K-1 individuals whose information also appears in the release. N-SA K-anonymity model proposed to maintain the confidentiality of respondents. Tuple suppression causes data loss as well as disturbs the accuracy of sensitive information. Tuple suppression is applied on record when particular record not satisfying K factor. If multiple dissimilar records present in dataset increases the percentage of data distortion. N-SA K-anonymity model suggest adding extra records from population to satisfy not only K-anonymity also increase data availability as well as help to maintain the accuracy of multiple sensitive information. Records are added in such a way, they will not disturb accuracy of multiple sensitive information.

A weighted graph is used as an underlying structure of many algorithms like semi-supervised learning and spectral clustering. If the edge weights are determined by a single similarity measure, then it hard if not impossible to capture all relevant aspects of similarity when using a single similarity measure. In particular, in the case of visual object matching it is beneficial to integrate different similarity measures that focus on different visual *** this paper, a novel approach to integrate multiple similarity measures is proposed. First pairs of similarity measures are combined with a diffusion process on their tensor product graph (TPG). Hence the diffused similarity of each pair of objects becomes a function of joint diffusion of the two original similarities, which in turn depends on the neighborhood structure of the TPG. We call this process Fusion with Diffusion (FD). However, a higher order graph like the TPG usually means significant increase in time complexity. This is not the case in the proposed approach. A key feature of our approach is that the time complexity of the diffusion on the TPG is the same as the diffusion process on each of the original graphs. Moreover, it is not necessary to explicitly construct the TPG in our framework. Finally all diffused pairs of similarity measures are combined as a weighted sum. We demonstrate the advantages of the proposed approach on the task of visual tracking, where different aspects of the appearance similarity between the target object in frame t - 1 and target object candidates in frame t are integrated. The obtained method is tested on several challenge video sequences and the experimental results show that it outperforms state-of-the-art tracking methods.

A High reliability file up into cloud storage service is presented. The key idea behind this RAID 6 encoding technique is based on the computing two syndromes, referred P and Q. The method needs the syndrome P and Q for decoding error location taken by lookup table, where a cloud storage serve is lost data and data recovery. To make file uploads more secure, in order to split a file into pieces and then the pieces message are computing two syndromes P and Q robust the file upload to cloud storage services. Moreover, the method is readily applied to Digital Signal Processing (DSP) systems and VLSI design.

In former work, the authors developed a modeling system for university learning processes, which aims at evaluating and refining university curricula to reach an optimum of learning success in terms of a best possible grade point average (GPA). This is performed by applying an Educational Data Mining (EDM) technology to former students curricula and their degree of success (GPA) and thus, uncovering golden didactic knowledge for successful education. We used learner profiles to personalize this technology. After a short introduction to this technology, we discuss the result of a practical application and draw conclusions. In particular, we could not obtain sufficient data to establish this kind of learner profiles. Therefore, we shifted our strategy from an "eager" one of holding an explicit model towards a "lazy" strategy of mining with data, which is really available without making "guesses" what they mean (profiles). In particular, we utilize the educational history of the students and vocational ambitions for student modeling.
