This paper investigates the impact of early reviews on product sales by analyzing the traits of initial reviewers on major e-commerce platforms. It segments product life-cycles into three phases: early, majority, and laggards, focusing on early reviewers who post reviews during the initial stages. The paper introduces an innovative interface for sentiment analysis to identify and predict early reviewers. Quantitative analysis reveals that early reviewers often provide more insightful comments and give higher overall ratings. Their ratings and helpfulness scores significantly affect product popularity. The methodology, tested on extensive datasets from Amazon and Yelp, extracts crucial attributes of early reviewers, including purchasing patterns and social impact. The interface employs a hybrid machine learning approach combining Naive Bayes, margin-based embedding ranking models (MERM), and support vector machines (SVMs) to predict potential early reviewers accurately. This approach balances probabilistic reasoning with robust classification, ensuring comprehensive forecasting. Evaluation metrics such as precision and accuracy demonstrate the effectiveness of the models over baseline methods. Furthermore, the study enhances the understanding of how early reviews influence consumer behavior and product success in e-commerce. The interface aids in refining product marketing strategies by enabling precise targeting of early reviewers, accelerating product adoption, amplifying sales, and optimizing marketing tactics in the competitive e-commerce landscape.

Network Softwarization revolutionizes infrastructure by introducing programmable network functions, leading to scalable, agile, and efficient networks. This innovation facilitates adaptable, secure Next Generation Networks, transforming connectivity. This study conducts a comparative analysis of SDN-based network functions utilizing three different controllers: Open vSwitch (OVS), OpenFlow Reference controller, and RYU, to understand their impact on packet loss and jitter. The OpenFlow Reference controller, primarily used for educational and basic experimental purposes, serves as a baseline. The OVS controller, operating within the Open vSwitch framework in Mininet, offers a practical level of network management capability, more advanced than the OpenFlow Reference controller yet not as comprehensive as the RYU Controller, a production-grade SDN controller. Our research aims to fill the gap in comparative performance analysis of these controllers, particularly in hybrid round-robin-based load balancing and firewall implementations. Recognizing the operational reality of SDN deployments, we explore both reactive and proactive modes, acknowledging that real-world applications like firewalls and load balancers often operate proactively with pre-populated rules, affecting data plane performance. The findings provide insights into each controller’s effectiveness, with OVS and RYU showing enhanced capability in reducing packet loss and jitter compared to the OpenFlow Reference controller. This research not only sheds light on the functional behaviors and performance trade-offs of these controllers but also contributes to the broader SDN and NFV discourse, offering a foundation for future academic and practical advancements in the field.

Multi-view data clustering often aims to utilize various representations or views of original data to improve the clustering performance compared to the single-view clustering approach. Most multi-view subspace clustering methods are proposed to construct the affinity matrix of each view individually and then implement with spectral clustering for multi-view data clustering. The multi-view low-rank sparse subspace clustering (MLRSSC) is an effective and popular clustering algorithm among multi-view subspace clustering. This method can explore the joint subspace representation through creating an affinity matrix integrated of all views of input data. In addition, the low-rank and sparsity constraints are introduced into this method to enhance the clustering results. However, the original MLRSSC uses the mean square error as the fidelity term while not consider the complex noise pollution in real situations. Therefore, we introduce a complex noise modeling approach, i.e., independent and piecewise identically distributed (IPID) noise model, for MLRSSC to improve its performance. The related experimental results confirm that this proposed algorithm surpasses many state-of-the-art subspace clustering methods on several real-world datasets. © 2023 ACM.

This paper proposes a support vector machine (SVM) classification model based on the grey wolf optimizer (GWO) to solve high-dimensional nonlinear classification problems in industrial production and daily life. To address the sensitivity of traditional SVM to parameter settings, this study utilizes the global search capability and fast convergence characteristics of the grey wolf optimizer to optimize the key parameters of SVM, including the penalty parameter C and the width parameter g of the radial basis function (RBF). By using the best accuracy rate achieved through five-fold cross-validation as the target function, the precise adjustment of SVM parameters was realized. Experiments using the Italian wine dataset were conducted for verification, and the results showed that the GWO-SVM model achieved a 100% accuracy rate on the test set, proving that the model has high classification accuracy and good generalization ability in handling complex classification problems. ©2024 IEEE.

PixMamba: Leveraging State Space Models in a Dual-Level Architecture for Underwater Image Enhancement

Underwater Image Enhancement (UIE) is critical for marine research and exploration but hindered by complex color distortions and severe blurring. Recent deep learning-based methods have achieved remarkable results, yet these methods struggle with high computational costs and insufficient global modeling, resulting in locally under- or over-adjusted regions. We present PixMamba, a novel architecture, designed to overcome these challenges by leveraging State Space Models (SSMs) for efficient global dependency modeling. Unlike convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with limited receptive fields and transformer networks with high computational costs, PixMamba efficiently captures global contextual information while maintaining computational efficiency. Our dual-level strategy features the patch-level Efficient Mamba Net (EMNet) for reconstructing enhanced image feature and the pixel-level PixMamba Net (PixNet) to ensure fine-grained feature capturing and global consistency of enhanced image that were previously difficult to obtain. The Internet of Vehicles (IoV), as one subset of the Internet of Things (IoT) in the smart transportation area, integrates vehicle networks with sensors and actuators. By connecting all sensors to the network, the IoV enables smart transportation (i.e., autonomous vehicles) and makes smart cities a reality. In smart transportation systems, roadside units (RSUs) capture all vehicle information and serve as gateways. However, smart transportation infrastructure has yet to mature in the current stage. RSUs are insufficient to support all vehicles. Meanwhile, the low computational capability of vehicles makes it challenging to recompute the driving route as the road environment changes. To address the problem of insufficient RSU coverage, one protocol called IEEE 802.11p enables vehicle-to-vehicle communication using relays. Nonetheless, data transfer among vehicles via relays is still time-consuming for a large-scale transportation network. To deal with the above issues, in this paper, we propose an IoV framework using digital twins (DTs) to digitize the IoV environment and assign nearby IoT gateways compatible with the RSU communication protocol. This framework lets DTs update the vehicle’s driving route based on real-time information. With a case study, we evaluate the efficacy of DT-assisted IoV based on communication latency and vehicle driving efficiency. Our evaluation results confirm that the proposed framework can efficiently enhance communication latency when the relay needs to pass through two or more vehicles and reduce travel time when vehicles receive updated route information at intersections.

Fingerprint identification plays a crucial role in crime detection, but manual analysis is time-consuming and error-prone. This research aims to develop an automated system for accurate and efficient fingerprint matching using machine learning. The proposed approach involves image acquisition, preprocessing, feature extraction, and classification. Fingerprint images are enhanced, binarized, and segmented. Minutiae (ridge endings and bifurcations) are extracted as features. A convolutional neural network (CNN) is trained on a dataset of fingerprint images for classification. By comparing algorithms, Random Forest achieved over $\mathbf{8 1 \%}$ accuracy, outperforming Decision Trees (nearly 75% accuracy). The trained CNN model can accurately match fingerprints from crime scenes with potential suspects, providing reliable evidence. The developed system offers law enforcement agencies an automated and accurate fingerprint identification tool, improving crime-solving efficiency and reducing manual effort. The proposed approach showcases the potential of machine learning in forensic applications.

Autonomous robot swarms must be able to make fast and accurate collective decisions, but speed and accuracy are known to be conflicting goals. While collective decision-making is widely studied in swarm robotics research, only few works on using methods of evolutionary computation to generate collective decision-making mechanisms exist. These works use task-specific fitness functions rewarding the accomplishment of the respective collective decision-making task. But task-independent rewards, such as for prediction error minimization, may promote the emer-gence of diverse and innovative solutions. We evolve collective decision-making mechanisms using a task-specific fitness function rewarding correct robot opinions, a task-independent reward for prediction accuracy, and a hybrid fitness function combining the two previous. In our simulations, we use the collective perception scenario, that is, robots must collectively determine which of two environmental features is more frequent. We show that evolution successfully optimizes fitness in all three scenarios, but that only the task-specific fitness function and the hybrid fitness function lead to the emergence of collective decision-making behaviors. In benchmark experiments, we show the competitiveness of the evolved decision-making mechanisms to the voter model and the majority rule and analyze the scalability of the decision-making mechanisms with problem difficulty. © 2023 IEEE.

There is growing attention on the importance of building intelligent systems where humans and Artificial Intelligence-based systems (AIs) form teams exploiting the potentially synergistic relationships between humans and automation. In the last decade, the computational modeling of empathy has gained increasing attention. Empowering interactive agents with empathic capabilities leads, on the human’s side, to more trust, increases engagement, and thus interaction length, helps cope with stress. These findings suggest that agents endowed with empathy may enhance social interaction in educational applications, artificial companions, medical assistants, and gaming applications. This article focuses on modeling the empathic behavior of virtual agents interacting with humans. We propose a formal model that enables virtual agents to exhibit empathic, emotional behavior. Specifically, we extend the modeling of empathy via behavior trees with a new type of node allowing the specification of various kinds of empathy. Using the proposed extension, we show how different agents’ reactive behavior can be modeled.

The popularity of Web Service-based systems is due to the advantage of flexibility, reusability and support for rapid system development. Web Service selection is a very important step for these web service-based systems. The skyline technique is widely used in the past for the selection of web services. In this work, an exhaustive study of Skyline-based web service selection techniques is presented. A review of the existing state-of-the-art is presented based on the approach followed for selection of web services, the advantages of using the proposed approach, the limitations of the approach and the problem addressed.
