In recent years, the Sri Lankan tea industry has fallen behind its competitors in the global tea market. This decline is caused by the challenges in productivity and resource management due to the limitations of traditional crop monitoring methods. This study presents a prototype system architecture that integrates multispectral imagery and IoT technologies to enhance plantation monitoring. The proposed system uses drones to capture high-resolution multispectral images and IoT devices to collect real-time environmental data, providing a comprehensive approach to assessing plant yield and detecting stress. Built on a hexagonal architecture, the system emphasizes modularity, reliability, and scalability by ensuring a clear separation of core functionalities from external components. This design facilitates easy adaptation to various crop types and agricultural contexts, enabling flexibility in deployment and use. This flexible framework can serve as a blueprint for improving decision-making and management practices across diverse plantation environments. © 2025 IEEE.

Memory forensics uses volatile digital artifacts as evidence about criminal activities. Analyzing captured memory dumps for volatile data requires time and effort. This paper studies the utilization of parallel programming to speed up RAM forensics. It presents a performance-based evaluation of parallel programming in the domain of memory forensics and compares sequential and parallel approaches to speed up the memory analysis process. First, it evaluates the sequential approach and uses it as a base case for further parallel approaches. Second, it evaluates two of the parallel approaches that can be performed on a typical user machine. Our experiments evaluate the use of two parallel programming paradigms: the in-process parallelization approach using OpenMP, and the inter-process parallelization approach using MPI. Our results compare the performance of the sequential approach, OpenMP thread-based approach, and MPI process-based approach. Experimentations compare the performance of three scenarios using six files of different sizes and various numbers of threads and/or processes. The results show that the use of MPI is slightly better than OpenMP approaches on the use of 2 and 4 processes/threads. However, when the number of processors/threads is increased to 8 and 16, OpenMP slightly outperforms the MPI approach. Additionally, the parallelization approach using OpenMP and MPI provides 3X to 5X speed up over the traditional sequential approach. Moreover, it is worth mentioning that this speed-up is achieved on traditional user machines without the use of HPC computers. © 2023 IEEE.

In each field, there is a need for better collaborative efforts among team members. The software development community is currently concentrating its efforts on developing tools that will make this endeavor easier. As a result, the two major purposes of a collaborative system are to solve the lack of community consciousness (since group members must be aware of one another) and to maintain flooring directive (i.e. provide means to manage access to shared resource in synchronous groupware systems). The goal of this study is to design a dynamic, extendable, and adaptable framework capable of handling challenges in synchronous community consciousness systems in order to solve these concerns. Driver fatigue and drowsiness instigate road traffic accidents while driving throughout the years. to reduce road traffic injuries and fatality cases, a real-time drowsiness detection system is needed by using artificial intelligence algorithms to detect drivers' tiredness and drowsiness at an early stage. This study proposes an automatic region-of-interest selection based stacked spatio-temporal convolution-long short-term memory (ConvLSTM) drowsiness detection neural network for an in-vehicle surveillance and security system. Haar Cascade classifiers are used to select the region-of-interest on the human face. A ConvLSTM model is implemented to extract spatio-temporal features from the selected region-of-interest and to predict the drowsiness state of the driver. The performance of the proposed model is compared with various pre-trained deep learning models such as CNN, VGG-16, VGG-19, ResNet-50 and MobileNet. The proposed model is trained on the Yawn Eye and MRL benchmarked image datasets. The proposed approach achieves an accuracy of 99.44% on the Yawn Eye dataset and 90.12% on the MRL dataset. The model is further tested and validated using a live feed camera. © 2022 IEEE.

The global impact of COVID-19 has been significant due to its rapid spread and high transmission rate. A large number of individuals have been exposed to this dangerous virus, emphasizing the importance of early detection to potentially save numerous lives. This research paper introduces an enhanced method for COVID-19 detection, utilizing a Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) and leveraging early clinical reports. Specifically, a Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) model is trained using data obtained from the metadata of the available dataset published by the World Health organisation, specifically focusing on extracting clinical reports and labels. Several pre-processing techniques and word embedding are applied to train an LSTM-based classifier that accurately identifies positive COVID-19 cases. The implementation of this proposed approach yielded superior results compared to traditional machine learning algorithms. The model achieved a testing accuracy of 87%, and future works include expanding the dataset to enhance the efficiency of the model. © 2023 IEEE.

Customer reviews on online platforms have grown to become an important source of insight into a company's performance. Food delivery services (FDS) companies aim to effectively use customers' feedback to identify areas for improvement of customer satisfaction. Although Arabic is becoming one of the most widely used languages on the Internet, only a few studies have focused on Arabic sentiment analysis to date. The present study conducts an extensive emotion mining and sentiment analysis on FDS-related reviews in Arabic, exploiting natural language processing, and machine learning techniques to extract information that reflects customers' subjective viewpoints, recognize their feelings, and determine polarity in the FDS domain. This work begins with collecting the FDS dataset (Talabat), and then extracting and creating a dialects lexicon for Arabic dialects, followed by walking the reader through detailed steps of cleaning and pre-processing a manually annotated dataset. Finally, we examined classification algorithms including Decision Tree (DT), and Support Vector Machine (SVM). We achieved a maximum accuracy of about 82% using the SVM classifier. © 2023 IEEE.

Federated Learning (FL) and the Internet of Things (IoT) have revolutionized data processing and analysis, overcoming the traditional limitations of cloud computing. However, traditional machine learning strategies lead to increased costs and catastrophic forgetting due to model retraining with new datasets. Continual learning has been proposed to counter this, enabling models to adapt to new data while preserving previous knowledge, which is beneficial for dynamic edge environments. Despite these advantages, the retention of previous knowledge during the continual learning process may lead to the information leakage. To address the inherent challenges of multitask scenarios, we present a Federated Continual Learning (FCL) framework that integrates the privacy-preserving benefits of Federated Learning (FL) into a continual learning system, ensuring both continual learning and privacy preservation in edge computing data processing and analysis. Specifically, our architecture introduces dedicated fully-connected layers for each task. This architecture ensures that distinctive features pertinent to each task are not only captured but also preserved throughout the model's lifespan. Within our framework, data is processed via task-specific layers. Subsequently, the final label is determined by associating it with the paramount prediction value, thus capitalizing on the model's comprehensive knowledge reservoir to bolster prediction accuracy. We subjected our FCL framework to rigorous validation using two benchmark datasets: MNIST and CFAR-10. Experimental outcomes unequivocally substantiate the efficacy of our proposed methodology. © 2023 IEEE.

The tracking of torsional eye movements, where the eye rotates about the axis of vision, is important for the diagnosis of certain vestibular disorders, but presents additional challenges when compared to the tracking of linear eye movements. This paper proposes a method for the measurement of ocular torsion that combines techniques from several previous studies, attempting to make the measurement robust to a highly off-axis centre of vision and obscurations of the pupil and iris. The proposed method detects feature points across a region of interest (ROI) including both the iris and the sclera (the white part of the eye surrounding the iris), using the Affine-SIFT (ASIFT) feature detection method, and tracks the feature points across frames using the Lucas-Kanade Optical Flow Method. The proposed method was only able to achieve an average error of 0.42 degrees compared to 0.17 degrees achieved in prior research. However, an additional 23.5% of feature points were able to be tracked compared to feature matching on the iris alone, showing that the proposed method has the potential to provide more accurate tracking than conventional methods. Future improvements proposed to the method include a deep segmentation method to automatically determine the ROI in each frame, and further testing with a calibration step to determine the source of error in the method.

An inappropriate diet is one of the main causes of poor health. However, it is difficult to sustain a quantitative diet assessment in the general living environment. Food object detection is a key method for solving this problem;still, it is difficult to find studies that apply recent object detection techniques. In addition, the currently used high-performance food object detection models have a special architecture that combines two deep learning models-food localization and food classification-in series to achieve high accuracy. The disadvantage of this architecture is that it is difficult to predict the scalability of a model. In this study, we built an end-to-end food object detection model using the Swin Transformer, which is one of the latest backbone models. The experiment was conducted to compare the performance of the UECFOOD dataset with other food object detection studies. For the UECFOOD-100 dataset, a mAP(mean Average Precision) of 0.522 was obtained;also, a mAP of 0.52 was obtained for the UECFOOD-256 dataset. The findings show that the proposed model that uses only end-to-end object detection produces better performance than previous studies using a combination of food localization and food classification. © 2022 ACM.

Automated Romberg Test: Leveraging a CNN and Centre of Mass Analysis for Sensory Ataxia Diagnosis

This paper proposes a novel method to diagnose sensory ataxia via an automated Romberg Test - the current de facto medical procedure used to diagnose this condition. It utilizes a convolutional neural network to predict joint locations, used for the calculation of various bio-mechanical markers such as the center of mass of the subject and various joint angles. This information is used in combination with data filtering techniques such as Kalman Filters, and center of mass analysis which helped make accurate inferences about the relative weight distribution in the lateral and anterior-posterior axes, and provide an objective, mathematically based diagnosis of this condition. In order to evaluate the performance of this method, testing was performed using dual weight scales and pre-annotated diagnosis videos taken from medical settings. These two methods both quantified the veritable weight distribution upon the ground surface with a ground truth and provided a real-world estimate of accuracy for the proposed method. A mean absolute error of 0.2912% was found for the calculated relative weight distribution difference, and an accuracy of 83.33% was achieved on diagnoses. © 2024, CC BY.
