State-of-the-art bootstrapping systems rely on expert-crafted semantic constraints such as negative categories to reduce semantic drift. Unfortunately, their use introduces a substantial amount of supervised knowledge. We present the Relation Guided Bootstrapping (RGB) algorithm, which simultaneously extracts lexicons and open relationships to guide lexicon growth and reduce semantic drift. This removes the necessity for manually crafting category and relationship constraints, and manually generating negative categories. © 2011 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the networked interconnection of everyday objects. IoT is an upcoming research field and is being regarded as the revolution in the world of communication because of its extensible applications in numerous fields. Due to open and self-assimilation nature of these networks they are highly prone to attacks. Because of this reason security is of primary concern here. The security attack can be of various types, the idea here is to prevent IoT networks from Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. The objective of Denial of Service (DoS) is to make the server resources unavailable to the intended user, and when several such DoS attacks are present in a network then the attack is known as a DDoS attack. Our strategy is to prevent DDoS attack in IoT networks by using Learning Automata (LA) concepts. In this paper, we present a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) which is used as a system model for IoT here. SOA provides a platform to the developers using which they can develop various applications for IoT without any concern regarding the nature of the objects, thereby acting as a middleware. The DDoS prevention strategy has been targeted for the SOA based architecture for IoT. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme is effective in preventing DDoS attacks in IoT. © 2011 IEEE.

In order to satisfy the development of contemporary higher education better, after analyzing different experimental methods, this paper proposes a new idea to combine real laboratory equipments and virtual simulation system for building the remote experimental platform. Therefore students are no longer limited in the visible laboratory. As a result, the experimental resources can be made used of completely, the manual management can be reduced, the application of laboratory equipments can be improved efficiently. © 2011 IEEE.

As an emerging portable service platform, OSGi is now taking a more and more important role in Ubiquitous Computing environment. As a module management framework, OSGi provides the functions of dynamic loading and unloading software modules at runtime. But its use is limited because it is centralized and single programming language supported. In this paper we present LIR-OSGi, an extended framework of OSGi, which is designed to add the distribution and programming language independence to OSGi. Meanwhile it is easy to use for developers because of the transparence of service invocation and automation of distribution. Not like OSGi which can be applied only on the Java platform, LIR-OSGi makes programs which may be written in different programming languages be able to call each other transparently so that it can be applied in many different platforms such as DotNet Framework and so on. This brings much convenience to the program development in a distributed and heterogeneous environment. © 2011 IEEE.

Finding lines of code similar to a code fragment across large knowledge bases in fractions of a second is a new branch of code clone research also known as real-time code clone search. Among the requirements real-time code clone search has to meet are scalability, short response time, scalable incremental corpus updates, and support for type-1, type-2, and type-3 clones. We conducted a set of empirical studies on a large open source code corpus to gain insight about its characteristics. We used these results to design and optimize a multi-level indexing approach using hash table-based and binary search to improve Internet-scale real-time code clone search response time. Finally, we performed an evaluation on an Internet-scale corpus (1.5 million Java files and 266 MLOC). Our approach maintains a response time for 99.9% of clone searches in the microseconds range, while supporting the aforementioned requirements. © 2011 IEEE.

The rapid diffusion of information and opinions through social media, such as web forums and micro-blogs, is affecting the development of crisis situations, such as the Iranian presidential election, the Egyptian protest, and the ROKS Cheonan sinking. Understanding this rapid widespread diffusion, and assessing what information is spreading, what ideas are becoming common, and who is talking about what, is critical for crisis management. This paper presents a computational system for social media assessing the flow of ideas on the web and changes in who is talking about what. This system, given raw social media data, identifies the key topics, the key paths by which topics evolve, the key individuals who contribute to the topic, and the key influence relations between the contributors. We present this system implemented with the Author-Topic model, the meta-network model, and various computational techniques to find and filter the heavy contributors and influences. We demonstrate the performance of the system, by applying it to social media data surrounding the ROKS Cheonan sinking. We describe the results of assessing the initial and changing perceptions of the event using this system. © 2011 IEEE.

Future development of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) depends on Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) in which communications will help to improve traffic safety and efficiency through exchanging information among vehicles. As each vehicle cannot be a source of all messages in VANET, most communications depend on the information received from other vehicles. To protect VANET from malicious action, each vehicle must be able to evaluate, decide and react locally on information received from other vehicles. Message verification is more challenging in VANETs since the security and privacy of the participating vehicles, in general, and of the drivers and passengers specifically is of major concern. Each vehicle needs to verify the accuracy of the message and needs to verify that the received message is from a legitimate vehicle. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm to secure vehicular communication with the help of trust measured for the given period using a probabilistic approach. The proposed algorithm secures VANETs against the untrustworthy drivers. The proposed algorithm is illustrated through numerical results obtained from simulations. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper presents GoPoMoSA, a Goal-oriented Process Modeling and Simulation Advisor that semi-automatically discovers suitable software Process Modeling and Simulation (SPMS) techniques for (inexperienced) process modelers to achieve their process modeling goals. GoPoMoSA takes the goal-oriented modeling approach that captures the associations among Process Modeling Stakeholder goals and existing SPMS techniques via Relevant Process Elements modeled in the knowledge graphs. We evaluated the accuracy and feasibility of GoPoMoSA with data collected from 212 published SPMS literatures and a real-world process modeling and simulation case on requirements traceability. Our results show that GoPoMoSA (1) was able to find suitable SPMS techniques based on stakeholder goals with an average of 85.38% accuracy;(2) helped novice process modelers effectively and efficiently achieve their goals. © 2011 ACM.

In this paper we present an algorithm to perform precoder adaptation and power control for rate maximization problem in ad-hoc networks where individual transmitterreceiver pairs communicate in interference channel scenario. We maximize links' achievable rates subject to average power and spectral mask constraints. With the usage of spectral mask constraints, the proposed algorithm can be directly applied to cognitive radio systems where unlicensed secondary users can get opportunistic channel access without creating harmful interference to licensed primary users. This help improve the spectrum utilization where the idle bands can be accessed dynamically and opportunistically with the help of the spectral masks. We have analyzed the algorithm in three different cases: high, ideal, and low cross-channel gains. To scale up achievable rate/capacity with network size the distance between source and destination nodes must remain small as the network grows. Alternatively, the distance from interfering transmitter to intended receiver should be large so that the cross-channel gains would be low. The proposed algorithm is illustrated with the help of simulation results. © 2011 IEEE.
