Background: Competitions in text mining have been used to measure the performance of automatic text processing solutions against a manually annotated gold standard corpus (GSC). The preparation of the GSC is time-consuming and costly and the final corpus consists at the most of a few thousand documents annotated with a limited set of semantic groups. To overcome these shortcomings, the CALBC project partners (PPs) have produced a large-scale annotated biomedical corpus with four different semantic groups through the harmonisation of annotations from automatic text mining solutions, the first version of the Silver Standard Corpus (SSC-I). The four semantic groups are chemical entities and drugs (CHED), genes and proteins (PRGE), diseases and disorders (DISO) and species (SPE). This corpus has been used for the First CALBC Challenge asking the participants to annotate the corpus with their text processing solutions. Results: All four PPs from the CALBC project and in addition, 12 challenge participants (CPs) contributed annotated data sets for an evaluation against the SSC-I. CPs could ignore the training data and deliver the annotations from their genuine annotation system, or could train a machine-learning approach on the provided pre-annotated data. In general, the performances of the annotation solutions were lower for entities from the categories CHED and PRGE in comparison to the identification of entities categorized as DISO and SPE. The best performance over all semantic groups were achieved from two annotation solutions that have been trained on the SSC-I. The data sets from participants were used to generate the harmonised Silver Standard Corpus II (SSC-II), if the participant did not make use of the annotated data set from the SSC-I for training purposes. The performances of the participants' solutions were again measured against the SSC-II. Ubiquitous tele-care (u-Telecare) is a migration from tele-health and mobile health (m-Health) for continuous care. The u-Telecare is quite adaptable in the user environment which owns specific attributes, such as telecommunication, highly mobility, and medical care. Based on the preliminary survey and evaluation, some innovative software applications can support mobile nursing carts (MNC) for nurses, handheld devices for physicians, hospice care for terminal cancer patients, and home care devices for chronic diabetic patients. The research findings discovered that software defined radio (SDR) is a feasible solution and can be implemented for handling the physical layer of the multi-wireless communication standards. In this paper, we propose an ubiquitous seamless MNC (u-SMNC), which provides agile and high quality software focusing on the design and application implementation in order to supply an experimental software platform that allows MNCs and physician's handheld devices.

Parser disambiguation with precision grammars generally takes place via statistical ranking of the parse yield of the grammar using a supervised parse selection model. In the standard process, the parse selection model is trained over a hand-disambiguated treebank, meaning that without a significant investment of effort to produce the treebank, parse selection is not possible. Furthermore, as treebanking is generally streamlined with parse selection models, creating the initial treebank without a model requires more resources than subsequent treebanks. In this work, we show that, by taking advantage of the constrained nature of these HPSG grammars, we can learn a discriminative parse selection model from raw text in a purely unsupervised fashion. This allows us to bootstrap the treebanking process and provide better parsers faster, and with less resources. © 2010 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Flooding-based Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks present a serious threat to the stability of the Internet. Identifying the attacks rapidly and accurately is significant for the efficient operation of Internet applications and services. Recent observations in the U.S. indicate a significant increase of cyber attacks on U.S. military information systems in 2009. Current technologies are still unable to withstand largescale DDoS attacks. Single point detection and response is a first step to defeat such distributed attacks. Distributed global defense systems, using a coordinated effort, go much further towards thwarting such attacks. In this paper, we propose a distributed defense infrastructure to detect DDoS attacks globally using a cooperative overlay network and a gossip-based information exchange protocol. Our NS2 based simulation results show that the proposed solution can detect attacks with a detection rate as high as 0.99 with false alarms below 0.01. This compares favorably against other widely known methods including changepoint detection, TTL analysis and wavelet analysis. © 2010 IEEE.

Speed-regulating valve is an important component of a hydraulic system, and it is easy to go wrong. How to diagnose the faults is very important for the maintenance of mechanic system. By means of wavelet packet, this paper first extracts features from the power spectrum of signals in normal and fault state respectively, then the features are input to a LSSVM as parameters to diagnose faults, and the result is satisfactory. ©2011 ETP.

Language identification is the task of identifying the language a given document is written in. This paper describes a detailed examination of what models perform best under different conditions, based on experiments across three separate datasets and a range of tokenisation strategies. We demonstrate that the task becomes increasingly difficult as we increase the number of languages, reduce the amount of training data and reduce the length of documents. We also show that it is possible to perform language identification without having to perform explicit character encoding detection. © 2010 Association for Computational Linguistics.

We explore the task of automatically classifying dialogue acts in 1-on-1 online chat forums, an increasingly popular means of providing customer service. In particular, we investigate the effectiveness of various features and machine learners for this task. While a simple bag-of-words approach provides a solid baseline, we find that adding information from dialogue structure and inter-utterance dependency provides some increase in performance;learners that account for sequential dependencies (CRFs) show the best performance. We report our results from testing using a corpus of chat dialogues derived from online shopping customer-feedback data. © 2010 Association for Computational Linguistics.

In this paper, we propose an experiment design and implementation for distance evaluation in wireless sensor networks (WSN). More specifically, a WSN application is implemented for collecting received signal strength indicator (RSSI) measurements in different conditions. The application consists of two parts: an experiment control script which runs on a computer, and an experiment mote firmware which runs on each WSN node. Obtained results enable to conclude on the precision of the distance evaluation for each node. © 2010 IEEE.

Usually, in a group decision context, the importance level, confidence degree and amount of knowledge are very different among individuals. So, when all the individuals have to reach agreement, is quite important to model these kind of features in order to get more appropriate decisions. Last related works are focussed in the selection process to model the importance of the experts, but such approach, under some circumstances, can behave badly. In this contribution, we present a new adaptive consensus reaching model specifically designed to undertake group decision making situations in which the experts have different importance or confidence levels. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

We present PlayGo, a comprehensive tool for scenario-based programming, built around the language of live sequence charts and the play-in/play-out approach [7], which includes a compiler into AspectJ code and means for debugging the execution. PlayGo is intended to be a full IDE that addresses major parts of the vision of Liberating Programming [3]. This paper presents the first version of PlayGo, which already includes several of the intended capabilities. © 2010 ACM.
