The ability to read documents and notes is a crucial part of the education system, but for over 1200 visually impaired students in New Zealand and many more worldwide, large and clearly printed documents remain elusive. Resizing documents for visually impaired readers currently requires a mixture of time, patience and experience with word processors such as Microsoft Word. This paper describes the design and construction of an add-in to simplify the process of resizing documents so that they become more readable to the visually impaired. This paper discusses common problems with the resizing of documents, and the tools produced to help reduce or eliminate these problems. The tools were evaluated in the resizing of workbooks by staff at a visual resource centre with promising results. Copyright the author(s) and CHISIG.

With the popularity of location-based services and the abundant usage of smart phones and GPS enabled devices, the necessity of outsourcing spatial data has grown rapidly over the past few years. Nevertheless, in the database outsourcing paradigm, the authentication of the query results at the client remains a challenging problem. In this paper, we focus on the Outsourced Spatial Database (OSDB) model and propose an efficient scheme, called VN-Auth, that allows a client to verify the correctness and completeness of the result set. Our approach can handle both k nearest neighbor (kNN) and range queries, and is based on neighborhood information derived by the Voronoi diagram of the underlying spatial dataset. Specifically, upon receiving a query result, the client can verify its integrity by examining the signatures and exploring the neighborhood of every object in the result set. Compared to the current state-of-the-art approaches (i.e., methods based on Merkle hash trees), VN-Auth produces significantly smaller verification objects (VO) and is more computationally efficient, especially for queries with low selectivity. © 2010 ACM.

The performance of fuzzy control is depends on the fuzzy control rules, quantification factor and the scale factor, because of these multiple objectives are influenced with each other. Therefore, it is very difficult to ensure the control effect only rely on expertise's experience. In this paper, we propose a dynamic evolutionary algorithm to optimize the fuzzy controller's multi-objectives based on the competitive relationship between particles' free energy and entropy in the phase space system. A new option strategy is put forward to maintain species diversity, and multi-parent crossover operator select some individuals to form a space and then do searching in this space. The algorithm has strong ability to find the solution of the problem, and it also faster compared with other traditional algorithms. Simulation results show that fuzzy controller optimized by our algorithm has good steady-state response time, steady-state error and overshoot. © 2010 IEEE.

Multi-core technologies are widely used in embedded systems. Stochastic resource allocation can guarantee certain quality of the services (QoS). In heterogeneous embedded system resource allocation, execution time distributions of different tasks on cores are predicted before scheduling. The difference between actual execution time and estimated execution time may lead to allocations which are not robust. In this paper, we present an evaluation of impacts of inaccurate information on resource allocation. We propose a systematic measure of the robustness degradation and evaluate how inaccurate probability parameters affect the robustness of resource allocations. Furthermore, we compare the performance of three widely used greedy heuristics when using the inaccurate information. © 2010 IEEE.

Cloud computing is an emerging computing paradigm in which IT resources and capacities are provided as services over the Internet. Promising as it is, this paradigm also brings forth new challenges for data security and access control when users outsource sensitive data for sharing on cloud servers, which are likely outside of the same trust domain of data owners. To maintain the confidentiality of sensitive user data against untrusted servers, existing work usually apply cryptographic methods by disclosing data decryption keys only to authorized users. However, in doing so, these solutions inevitably introduce heavy computation overhead on the data owner for key distribution and data management when fine-grained data access control is desired, and thus do not scale well. In this paper, we present a way to implement scalable and fine-grained access control systems based on attribute-based encryption (ABE). For the purpose of secure access control in cloud computing, the prevention of illegal key sharing among colluding users is missing from the existing access control systems based on ABE. This paper addresses this challenging open issue by defining and enforcing access policies based on data attributes and implementing user accountability by using traitor tracing. Furthermore, both the user grant and revocation are efficiently supported by using the broadcast encryption technique. Extensive analysis shows that the proposed scheme is highly efficient and provably secure under existing security models. © 2010 IEEE.

Microarray technology allows for the simultaneous monitoring of thousands of genes expressions per sample. Unfortunately, the classification of these samples into distinct classes is often difficult as the number of genes (features) greatly exceeds the number of samples. Consequently, there is a need to investigate new, robust machine learning techniques capable of accurately classifying microarray data. In this paper, we present a coevolutionary learning classifier system based on feature set partitioning to classify gene expression data. A distributed implementation, which leverages Cloud computing technologies, is used to address the inherent computational costs of our model. The development and execution of this application was done using the Aneka middleware on the public Cloud (Amazon EC2) infrastructure. Experiments conducted using gene expression profiles demonstrates that the proposed implementation outperforms other well-known classifiers in terms of accuracy. Preliminary analysis into the impact of different Cloud setups on the performance of the classifier are also reported. © 2010 IEEE.

Dynamic spectrum access in cognitive radio (CR) networks is emerging concept to utilize the scarce spectrum in an efficient manner. CR systems will operate in heterogeneous networks in which efficient use of resources will require control of both transmission rate and power for active CRs. In this paper we propose an algorithm for resource allocation in dynamic spectrum access ad-hoc networks where active CR links satisfy their own quality-of-service (QoS) requirements as well as the interference constraints to respect the incumbent primary user- transmissions. We formulate the problem of joint transmission rate and power control for active CR links to maximize their surplus (or net utility) functions using distributed interference compensation as a non-cooperative game. We illustrate the proposed approach with numerical results obtained from sim- ulations. © 2010 IEEE.

Data storage technologies have been recognized as one of the major dimensions of information management along with the network infrastructure and applications. The prosperity of cloud computing requires the migration from server-attached storage to network-based distributed storage. Along with variant advantages, distributed storage also poses new challenges in creating a secure and reliable data storage and access facility. The data security in cloud is one of the challenges to be addressed before the novel pay-as-you-go business model can be accepted and applied widely. Concerns are raised from both insecure/unreliable service providers and potential malicious users. In this article, we analyze the integrity vulnerability existing in the current cloud storage platforms and show the problem of repudiation. A novel non-repudiation (NR) protocol specifically designed in the context of cloud computing environment is proposed. We have also discussed the robustness of the NR protocol against typical attacks in the network environments. © 2010 IEEE.

With the advance of semiconductor, multi-core architecture is inevitable in today's embedded system design. Nested loops are usually the most critical part in multimedia and high performance DSP (Digital Signal Processing) systems. Hence, maximizing loop parallelism is an important issue to improve the performance of a modern compiler. This paper studies how to maximize the system performance with the consideration of energy reduction for applications with multidimensional nested loops on multi-core DSP architectures. An algorithm, EALPM (Energy-Aware Loop Parallelism Maximization), is proposed in this paper. We implemented a two phase strategy. First, the strategy uses retiming and loop transformation to parallelize nested loops. Then the strategy employs a novel voltage assignment algorithm to reduce total energy consumption. The experimental results show that on average, both performance and energy-saving can be significantly improved using the EALPM algorithm. © 2010 IEEE.
