In this paper we propose an approach compliant with the MPEG-4 standard to synthesize and control facial expressions generated using 3D facial models. This is achieved by establishing the MPEG-4 facial animation standard conformity with the quadratic deformation model representations of facial expressions. This conformity allows us to utilize the MPEG-4 facial animation parameters (FAPs) with the quadratic deformation tables, as a higher layer, to compute the FAP values. The FAP values for an expression E are computed by performing a linear mapping between a set of transformed MPEG-4 FAP points (using quadratic deformation models) and the 3D facial model semantics. The nature of the quadratic deformation model representations of facial expressions can be employed to synthesize and control the six main expressions (smile, sad, fear, surprise, anger, and disgust). Using Whissel's psychological studies on emotions we compute an interpolation parameter that is used to synthesize intermediate facial expressions. The paper presents results of experimental studies performed using the Greta embodied conversational agent. The achieved results are promising and can lead to future research in synthesizing a wider range of facial expressions. © 2010 IEEE.

Several important information retrieval tasks, including those in medicine, law, and patent review, have an authoritative standard of relevance, and are concerned about retrieval completeness. During the evaluation of retrieval effectiveness in these domains, assessors make errors in applying the standard of relevance, and the impact of these errors, particularly on estimates of recall, is of crucial concern. Using data from the interactive task of the TREC Legal Track, this paper investigates how reliably the yield of relevant documents can be estimated from sampled assessments in the presence of assessor error, particularly where sampling is stratified based upon the results of participating retrieval systems. We show that assessor error is in general a greater source of inaccuracy than sampling error. A process of appeal and adjudication, such as used in the interactive task, is found to be effective at locating many assessment errors;but the process is expensive if complete, and biased if incomplete. An unbiased double-sampling method for resolving assessment error is proposed, and shown on representative data to be more efficient and accurate than appeal-based adjudication. © 2010 ACM.

Ubiquitous knowledge discovery systems must be captured from many different perspectives. In earlier chapters, aspects like machine learning, underlying network technologies etc. were described. An essential component, which we shall discuss now, is still missing: Ubiquitous Data. While data themselves are a central part of the knowledge discovery process, in a ubiquitous setting new challenges arise. In this context, the emergence of data itself plays a large role, therefore we label this part of KDubiq systems ubiquitous data. It clarifies the KDubiq challenges related to the multitude of available data and what we must do before we can tap into this rich information source. © 2010 Springer-Verlag.

Topic models could have a huge impact on improving the ways users find and discover content in digital libraries and search interfaces, through their ability to automatically learn and apply subject tags to each and every item in a collection, and their ability to dynamically create virtual collections on the fly. However, much remains to be done to tap this potential, and empirically evaluate the true value of a given topic model to humans. In this work, we sketch out some sub-tasks that we suggest pave the way towards this goal, and present methods for assessing the coherence and inter-pretability of topics learned by topic models. Our large-scale user study includes over 70 human subjects evaluating and scoring almost 500 topics learned from collections from a wide range of genres and domains. We show how a scoring model - based on pointwise mutual information of word-pairs using Wikipedia, Google and MEDLINE as external data sources - performs well at predicting human scores. This automated scoring of topics is an important first step to integrating topic modeling into digital libraries. © 2010 ACM.

Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network (GPON) system has been standardized in ITU-T Rec. G.984 series. It can provide high-speed optical subscriber networks with broad bandwidth and is getting more popular in access network. But with the continuous increase in higher bandwidth demand applications like IPTV, VOD, HDTV, E-learning etc, the need for much higher capacity over GPON links is more obvious. In this paper, we propose a method of deploying MAC protocols and a special filter over GPON system to get higher rate of GPON links' utilization.

In this paper, a structured max-margin learning scheme is developed to achieve more effective training of a large number of inter-related classifiers for multi-label image annotation. First, a visual concept network is constructed to characterize the inter-concept visual similarity contexts more precisely and determine the inter-related learning tasks automatically. Second, multiple base kernels are combined to achieve more precise characterization of the diverse visual similarity contexts between the images and address the issue of huge intra-concept visual diversity more effectively. Third, a structured max-margin learning algorithm is developed by incorporating the visual concept network, max-margin Markov networks and multi-task learning to address the issue of huge inter-concept visual similarity more effectively. Our structured max-margin learning algorithm can leverage the inter-concept visual similarity contexts to learn a large number of inter-related classifiers simultaneously and improve their discrimination power significantly. This paper proposes an ant colony clustering algorithm of image segmentation based on cloud model. Making use of the characteristics of cloud model, it is able to dynamically adjust the value of the pheromone and the pheromone evaporation factor that differ from the traditional ant colony algorithm. Since ant colony algorithm has high ability to deal with local optimization and fuzzy clustering as well as its overall consideration of various factors such as the characteristic of gray and gradient of each pixel and the different membership of each pixel to the object, boundary, background and the noise, the algorithm can segment the image efficiently through the clustering of the pixels with different characteristics. For which followed by transforming the image with watershed algorithm. ©2010 IEEE.

Papers focused on new domains and new experiences with the connection between requirements engineering and the Web were presented in WeRE.

Test power, volume, and time are the major test cost parameters that must be minimized while achieving the desired level of fault coverage. Unlike prior research in delay fault testing that has focused on at most two test cost parameters, the hybrid (LOS+LOC) scheme proposed here simultaneously considers all three cost parameters and achieves better fault coverage than prior schemes, as demonstrated by experimental results. A factor of (n/logn) reduction in test power is achieved by the use of a nonlinear double-tree-scan (DTS) structure instead of linear scan chain of length n. Concomitantly, by exploiting the permutation feature of DTS, whereby the same test data can be loaded in multiple ways, we also achieve substantial reductions in the test-data volume. By incorporating the Illinois scan (ILS) within this framework, we minimize not only the test time but also achieve further reductions in test-data volume. ©2010 IEEE.
