COMPRESSO: Latency-Aware Transmission of Compressed IoT Measurement Data Over SDN

Measurement data obtained from "things"in the Internet of Things (IoT) faces challenges in efficient transmission due to the low-bandwidth data transmission *** observe that measurement data are fixed in size and format, and low-entropy in the time domain, indicating that compression can be benefited. Rather than employing a single compression algorithm as advocated in existing literature, we argue that optimal transmission can be achieved by jointly considering compression overheads and network status, where software-defined networking (SDN) is employed to enforce network statistics and packet forwarding. This paper presents a new paradigm that achieves optimal transmission of SDN-empowered compressed measurement data. We formulate the problem as an optimization problem and prove its non-polynomial hardness time complexity. Due to this complexity, we introduce COMPRESSO, a heuristic algorithm that efficiently solves the problem. We conduct rigorous simulations, and the results demonstrate the efficiency of the new paradigm and COMPRESSO, i.e., attaining comparable performance to the optimal solution with 50% time usage reduction. © 2014 IEEE.

Accurate retinal vessel segmentation from eye fundus images is a major challenge in automated methods. U-Net has been widely used in medical image segmentation, and its effectiveness has led researchers to propose various U-Net variants. However, most of these variants are resource-intensive, suggesting that further development is needed. This study introduces a novel approach called SE-Half-UNet, which derives from the Half-UNet framework by incorporating the Squeeze-and-Excitation (SE) Module to bolster the network's representative capacity by emphasizing channel relationships within feature maps. Our method achieves superior performance in retinal vessel segmentation, with a high F1-Score of 0.8303 and 0.8372 for DRIVE and CHASE_DB datasets, respectively. This new method facilitates the accurate analysis of eye images and encourages computer research advances. © 2024 IEEE.

Many index advisors have recently been proposed to build indexes automatically to improve query performance. However, they mainly consider performance improvement in static scenarios. Their robustness, i.e., stable performance in dynamic scenarios (e.g., with minor workload changes), has not been well investigated. This paper addresses the challenges of assessing the index advisor's robustness from the following aspects. First, we introduce perturbation-based workloads for robustness assessment and identify three typical perturbation constraints that occur in real scenarios. Second, with the perturbation constraints, we formulate the generation of perturbed queries as a sequence-to-sequence problem and propose TRAP (Tailored Robustness assessment via Adversarial Perturbation) to pinpoint the performance loopholes of index advisors. Third, to generalize to various index advisors, we place TRAP in an opaque-box setting (i.e., with little knowledge of the index advisors' internal design), and we propose a two-phase training paradigm to efficiently train TRAP without elaborately annotated data. Fourth, we conduct comprehensive robustness assessments on standard benchmarks and real workloads for ten existing index advisors. Our findings reveal that these index advisors are vulnerable to the workloads generated by TRAP. Finally, based on the assessment results, we shed light on insights to enhance the robustness of different index advisors. For example, learning-based index advisors can benefit from adopting a fine-grained state representation and a candidate pruning strategy. © 2024 IEEE.

In the Philippines, the prevalent method for drying agricultural and aquatic products like rice, corn, and fish relies on the traditional sun-drying technique where the produce is laid out under the sun, in an open area, and exposed to environmental factors like dust, dirt, and insects. This practice persists primarily because no other alternatives can guarantee a cost-effective yield when drying agricultural products. To address this, a multilevel solar dryer with solar-powered monitoring for households was developed as a sustainable option. Inputs from farming and fisherfolk communities were gathered through interviews and consultations, which served as the basis in designing the solar dryer. A prototype was built and then deployed in a fisherfolk household in Bani, Zambales. In this paper, three species of fish, locally known as bisugo, mataan, and danggit, were dried using the solar dryer. In parallel, traditional sun drying was conducted to compare the drying time of the two methods. Data showed that the multilevel solar dryer was effective in trapping the heat inside its drying chamber. Moreover, the water activity of the dried products was obtained to determine their susceptibility to spoilage. The measured values were below the maximum threshold set by the Philippine national standard for dried fish, which indicates that the dried products can be sold commercially. Lastly, the minimum viable product of the solar dryer developed in this study costs Php 20,000.00 (USD 350.00), making this an affordable alternative. © 2024 IEEE.

Advancements in systems based on the Internet of Things (IoT) have led to a significant transformation across various sectors. However, the security of IoT networks remains a major concern due to the diversity and ubiquity of connected devices. This paper introduces an innovative intrusion detection method for IoT systems, combining the bioinspired features selection algorithms with artificial neural network, emphasing a special focuse on Grey wolf optimisation algorithm (GWOA). Bio-inspired algorithms select the most relevant features from a dataset used in intrusion detection evaluation, while machine learning/deep learning (ML/DL) techniques ensure accurate classification of attacks. This approach provides an effective solution for enhancing IoT network security by identifying and responding to threats with precision and speed, thereby contributing to the protection of critical infrastructures against cyberattacks. The obtained results showed promising performances in intrusion detection with the optimal set of features. In which GWO achived a performance above 90% with approximately 20% of the global features set. © 2024 IEEE.

The implementation of network slicing services, designed to fulfill the diverse requirements of each Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) use case, has significantly facilitated the expansion of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV). Three critical communication needs for the V2X ecosystem are ensured by network slicing: ultra-low latency and high reliability, enhanced mobile broadband, and massive machine-type communication (mMTC) support. In addition, network scalability, high mobility, and large density are taken into account. It is noteworthy that the utilization of network slicing technology has evolved beyond its fundamental objectives. In this context, the application of network cutting technology extends its objectives to encompass aspects beyond the essential requirements. This review aims to scrutinize and categorize scientific research endeavors within this domain, according to the specific objectives underlying the adoption of network slicing technology in the IoV ecosystem.

The video surveillance system is a key component of the technologies deployed in smart cities. It serves a variety of applications, including public safety, crime prevention, traffic management, and environmental monitoring. The data captured by these systems includes sensitive information related to privacy, crime and national security, requiring robust protection against data breaches to ensure confidentiality. In this paper, we introduce a video fingerprinting-based method that uses a timestamp and device number, intended to prevent and detect image manipulation or replacement of original images with copies during transmission and of receiving the monitored data. Additionally, we propose the use of a blockchain system with an immutable distributed ledger for traceability and auditing of authentication procedures.

The deployment of video streaming in an Internet of Vehicles (IoV) context enhances both driving comfort and road safety. Video transmission provides clear and informative perspectives, offering a wide range of entertainment and infotainment, including details on restaurants, parking, and tourist attractions. However, maintaining a satisfactory quality of experience (QoE) in an IoV environment, which is characterized by fluctuating bandwidth and changing topology, presents a significant challenge. Furthermore, traffic parameters such as vehicle speed negatively impact video quality. This paper reviews various solutions proposed in the literature to optimize the MPEG-DASH (Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP) protocol in an IoV environment. The objective is to dynamically adjust video quality based on available resources to enhance QoE. Additionally, this review identifies key areas that researchers should focus on to improve this protocol. We highlight also the important challenges for our future contributions.

Multilevel inverters (MLI) have gained a significant emphasis in the area of renewable energy applications in recent years. The popularity of MLIs is due to their ability to efficiently convert the sustainable sources of energy, such as wind and solar power, into usable electrical energy. One key advantage of using reduced multilevel inverter configurations is that it can help to reduce the system overall cost by decreasing number of components required. The reduction of components in the inverter circuit results in simplification of design and lower expenditure. This paper proposes a fifteen-level modified multilevel inverter with cascaded h-bridge with a minimized switch count. The simulation results of the proposed inverter demonstrate that it is able to effectively attenuate harmonics and with reduced number of components required while still providing good performance. The suggested inverter design is also evaluated on its harmonic reduction characteristics, providing a cleaner output waveform and less distortion. © 2023 IEEE.
