Distributed Processing Models (DPM) such as the Grid, cluster computing and parallel processors are now more available, and affordable, to simple users. This availability permits the execution of extremely CPU demanding applications. Digital Signal Processing (DSP) is an area that benefits from such advances. DSP is used in a wide area of commercial and scientific applications such as computer graphics, simulation, media copyright protection and image processing. DPM for DSP is technically and economically viable. Promising applications that will be explored in this work include coding, rendering, copyright protection that is, highly demanding applications in terms of CPU load. Specific cases of heavy load mathematical transformations for large media objects are discussed. A proposal for incorporating the watermarking procedure in the Grid architecture is also briefly presented.

This paper deals with automatic dialog acts (DAs) recognition in Czech. The dialog acts are sentence-level labels that represent different states of a dialogue, depending on the application. Our work focuses on two applications: a multimodal reservation system and an animated talking head for hearing-impaired people. In that context, we consider the following DAs: statements, orders, yes/no questions and other questions. We propose to use both lexical and prosodic information for DAs recognition. The main goal of this paper is to compare different methods to combine the results of both classifiers. On a Czech corpus simulating a reservation of train tickets, the lexical information only gives about 92 % of classification accuracy, while prosody gives only about 45 % of accuracy. When both classifiers are combined with a multilayer perception, the lowest (lexical) word error rate further decreases by 26 %. We show that this improvement is close to the optimal one, given the correlation of the lexical and prosodic features. The other combination schemes do not outperform the lexical-only results.

We investigate how to obtain a balance between privacy and audit requirements in vehicular networks. Challenging the current trend of relying on asymmetric primitives within VANETs, our investigation is a feasibility study of the use of symmetric primitives, resulting in some efficiency improvements of potential value. More specifically, we develop a realistic trust model, and an architecture that supports our solution. In order to ascertain that most users will not find it meaningful to disconnect or disable transponders, we design our solution with several types of user incentives as part of the structure. Examples of resulting features include anonymous toll collection;improved emergency response;and personalized and route-dependent traffic information. Copyright 2005 ACM.

Quiescent current (IDDQ) testing is a valuable defect detection technique in CMOS ICs. However, its application in very deep submicron technologies is susceptible to the increased transistor leakage current. In this paper, an IDDQ testing technique and circuit are presented based on the background current compensation concept. This technique is independent from process and temperature variations and first experimental results from a fabricated circuit show that it is able to extend the viability of I DDQ testing in future nanometer technologies.

The reuse of software components is a key to realize the component-based development. When application programmers want to reuse software components provided by third parties on the Internet, static specification documents attached to components are insufficient as information regarding the behavioral features of components. In this paper, we propose a new system that enables the trial execution of components over the Internet from a remote site. Our system instantiates components on the server, and provides the web browser with readable property values and graphical user interface images of components whenever methods of components are invoked by input argument values. As a result of comparative evaluation, it is found that the usefulness of our system is greater than those of conventional techniques.

A program search system is indispensable for software reuse. However, conventional search techniques are inappropriate for prompt reuse of programs because these techniques target a program source code as a retrieval unit. In this paper, we propose a new component-extraction-based program search system. Our system analyzes a collection of object-oriented (OO) programs, and extracts reusable software components composed of interdependent OO classes. Using our system, the extracted components can be searched by keywords, and the result set can be viewed by a web browser such that the user can decide whether the query result component matches his/her requirements. As a result of evaluation experiments, it is found that our system can extract many reusable components, and support the user to search extracted components effectively.
