We describe an algorithm to estimate and track slow changes in power spectral density (PSD) of nonstationary pressure signals. The algorithm is based on a Kalman filter that adaptively generates an estimate of the autoregressive model parameters at each time instant. The algorithm exhibits superior PSD tracking performance in nonstationary pressure signals than classical nonparametric methodologies, and does not assume a piecewise stationary model of the data. Furthermore, it provides better time-frequency resolution, and is robust to model mismatches. We demonstrate its usefulness by a sample application involving PSD estimation and tracking of short records of simulated pressure waveforms. This algorithm is intended for applications were the PSD must be estimated and tacked during short transient periods, possibly after clinical interventions.

An adaptive MAC protocol for distributed wireless LANs, capable of operating efficiently under bursty traffic conditions, is introduced. According to the proposed protocol, the mobile station that is granted permission to transmit is selected by means of a neural-based algorithm. The neural-based algorithm takes into account the network feedback information in order to update the choice probability of each mobile station. The proposed protocol is compared via simulation to TDMA and IEEE 802.11 and is shown to exhibit superior performance under bursty traffic conditions even when the network feedback is noisy.

This paper presents a method that dramatically reduces artifacts caused by respiratory (and similar types of) patient motion in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The basis for the method is the observation that affine deformations of an object will correspond to a different but unique affine coordinate transform (plus phase shift) of the Fourier representation of the object. The resulting sample points will be irregularly distributed prohibiting the use of standard IFFT to reconstruct the object. The object can however be reconstructed through the use of a weighted regularized pseudo inverse. A standard pseudo inverse is, however, not possible due to excessive computational demands. For this reason a novel fast sequential pseudo inverse algorithm is also presented. Significantly improved results are obtained on both synthetic and clinical data.

Free-text forms of medical guidelines that are used in medical care are often cumbersome and difficult to memorize. Therefore a system that is able to present guidelines in a user-friendly manner has been designed. Guidelines are at first formalized by means of the popular GLIF3 model. Subsequently, the GLIF3 model is coded in XML. The system uses patient data and an XML-coded GLIF3 model graph evaluating the conditions of decision steps. If some conditions cannot be evaluated, (due to the unavailability of required data items), the system stops and highlights a branch from the root of the decision tree to the final step. Then, the user can input missing data into the system so that the system can continue to provide visualization. Thus, the presentation of guidelines is data-driven, making its use easier. The visualization system and the Electronic Health Record can be integrated in a system that can, during examination of a patient, suggest subsequent medical actions according to medical guidelines. Such a system has been designed and is now under development.
