Path prediction is currently being considered for use in the context of mobile and wireless computing toward more efficient network resource management schemes. Path prediction allows the network and services to further enhance the quality of service levels the user enjoys. Such mechanisms are mostly meaningful in infrastructures like wireless LANs. In this article we present a path prediction algorithm that exploits the machine learning algorithm of learning automata. The decision of the learning automaton is driven by the movement patterns of a single user but is also affected by the aggregated patterns demonstrated by all users. Simulations of the algorithm, performed using the Realistic Mobility Pattern Generator, show increased prediction accuracy.

A wearable intelligent platform for the monitoring of the health condition and rehabilitation of athletes is presented. The system provides doctors and trainers with real-time monitoring, alerting and medical decision support. It aims to help them optimize treatment and training procedures during rehabilitation, to prevent injury relapses and to ensure a prompt return to peak athletic condition. The system's design requirements are laid out along with its functional description. It is composed of three main subsystems: the athlete subsystem, the rehabilitation station and the portal. The athlete subsystem includes all the monitoring sensors worn by the athlete during training, along with a signal collector and a processing-transceiver unit for preliminary evaluation and for exchanging information with the rehabilitation station. The rehabilitation station is the main control, access and communication point of the system carrying most of the processing. The measurements derived from the received signals are fed into an intelligent module, which provides with the monitoring, alerting and decision support mechanisms. A virtual reality interface is used by the athlete to communicate with the system. The portal is a long-term data storage facility collecting selected data for research purposes.

This paper presents a Web-based database hosting technical information about pioneering ATM networking platforms, associated research activities engaging these platforms, and related important trials conducted in the framework of these research activities. The paper outlines the organisation and structure of the information content in the database and discusses methods of access through the WWW interface. Besides the "static" information offered by the database, other Java-based tools provide for the on-line monitoring of the status of the ATM platforms and for manipulating data arising from technological trials on these platforms. The integration of these tools with the database, under a commonWWW interface is discussed.

This paper presents an algorithm for performing early detection of disease outbreaks by searching a database of emergency department cases for anomalous patterns. Traditional techniques for anomaly detection are unsatisfactory for this problem because they identify individual data points that are rare due to particular combinations of features. When applied to our scenario, these traditional algorithms discover isolated outliers of particularly strange events, such as someone accidentally shooting their ear, that are not indicative of a new out-break. Instead, we would like to detect anomalous patterns. These patterns are groups with specific characteristics whose recent pattern of illness is anomalous relative to historical patterns. We propose using a rule-based anomaly detection algorithm that characterizes each anomalous pattern with a rule. The significance of each rule is carefully evaluated using Fisher's Exact Test and a randomization test. Our algorithm is compared against a standard detection algorithm by measuring the number of false positives and the timeliness of detection. Simulated data, produced by a simulator that creates the effects of an epidemic on a city, is used for evaluation. The results indicate that our algorithm has significantly better detection times for common significance thresholds while having a slightly higher false positive rate.
