In this paper we are concerned with the efficient use of a collection of disk-based storage systems and computing platforms in a heterogeneous setting for retrieving and processing large scientific datasets. We demonstrate, in the context of a data-intensive visualization application, how heterogeneity affects performance and show a set of optimization techniques that can be used to improve performance in a component-based framework. In particular, we examine the application of parallelism via transparent copies of application components in the pipelined processing of data. © 2002 IEEE.

Integrating awareness in cooperative applications through the reaction-diffusion metaphor

The paper discusses the notion of awareness from the point of view of the design of a supportive technology. This perspective requires a deeper understanding of the ways and means people adopt to deal with awareness information as well as considering the integration of awareness tools with tools supporting other forms of coordination. First, we suggest to consider two types of awareness: by-product awareness that is generated in the course of the activities people must do in order to accomplish their cooperative tasks;and add-on awareness that is the outcome of an additional activity, which is a neat cost for the cooperating actors in relation to what they must do and is discretional in that it depends on actors' evaluation of the contingent situation. Secondly, we propose a reaction-diffusion metaphor to describe the awareness phenomenology and to take into account the two above-mentioned types of awareness integration. The model of awareness derived from the metaphor makes visible and accessible by different types of users a set of elemental primitives whose flexible composition allows them to construct the awareness mechanisms they dynamically need. These primitives are incorporated in a software module that can be used in combination with coordinative applications for sake of promoting awareness information. The main architecture of the module is presented together with its interoperability with the target application: moreover, a simple example illustrates how the incorporated primitives can be used to build awareness mechanisms.

In this paper we discuss our work on plan management in the Autominder cognitive orthotic system. Autominder is being designed as part of an initiative on the development of robotic assistants for the elderly. Autominder stores and updates user plans, tracks their execution via input from robot sensors, and provides carefully chosen and timed reminders of the activities to be performed. It will eventually also learn the typical behavior of the user with regard to the execution of these plans. A central component of Autominder is its Plan Manager (PM), which is responsible for the temporal reasoning involved in updating plans and tracking their execution. The PM models plan update problems as disjunctive temporal problems (DTPs) and uses the Epilitis DTP solving system to handle them. We describe the plan representations and algorithms used by the Plan Manager, and briefly discuss its connections with the rest of the system. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

As the Internet is shifting towards a reliable QoS-aware network, accurately synchronized clocks distributed in the Internet become more significant. Network Time Protocol (NTP) is broadly deployed in the Internet for clock synchronization among distributed hosts, but it is weak in asymetric paths, i.e., it cannot accurately estimate the clock offset between two hosts when the forward and backward paths between them have different one-way delays. In this paper, we focus on estimating the offset and the skew of a clock from one-way delay measurement between two hosts, and propose an idea for improvement of such estimations, which reduces estimation errors in case that the forward and backward paths have different bandwidths that is one of main factors of the asymmetric delays.

In this paper, a new encryption mode, which we call the 2D-Encryption Mode, is presented. 2D-Encryption Mode extends ID-encryption modes, as ECB, CBC and CTR, to two dimensions. It has good security and practical properties. We first look at the type of problems it tries to solve, then describe the technique and its properties, and present a detailed mathematical analysis of its security, and finally discuss some practical issues related to its implementation.

In the Internet, a statistical perspective of global traffic flows has been considered as an important key to network management. Nonetheless, it is expensive or sometime difficult to measure statistics of each flow separately. Therefore, it is of practical importance to infer unobservable statistical characteristics of individual flows front characteristics of the aggregated-flows that are easily measured at some links (router interfaces) in the network. In this paper, we propose a new approach to such inference problems, and provide some examples of inferring unobservable arrival rates of packets on each flow front measurement of the aggregated-flows. Our method is applicable to cases not covered by the existing methods for the OD traffic matrix inference. We also show simulation results, which indicate potential of our approach.

This paper is concerned with the efficient execution of multiple query workloads on a cluster of SMPs. We target applications that access and manipulate large scientific datasets. Queries in these applications involve user-defined processing operations and distributed data structures to hold intermediate and final results. Our goal is to implement system components to leverage previously computed query results and to effectively utilize processing power and aggregated I/O bandwidth on SMP nodes so that both single queries and multi-query batches can be efficiently executed.

The SHriMP (Simple Hierarchical Multi-Perspective) visualization technique was designed to enhance how people browse and explore complex information spaces. SHriMP uses a nested graph view to present information that is hierarchically structured. It introduces the concept of nested interchangeable views to allow a user to explore multiple perspectives of information at different levels of abstraction. SHriMP combines a hypertext following metaphor with animated panning and zooming motions over the nested graph to provide continuous orientation and contextual cues for the user. In this demo, we show how these ideas are proving useful in the areas of software visualization, knowledge management and flow diagram visualization.

Progress in Prolog applications requires ever better performance and scalability from Prolog implementation technology. Most modern Prolog systems are emulator-based. Best performance thus requires both good emulator design and good memory performance. Indeed, Prolog applications can often spend hundreds of megabytes of data, but there is little work on understanding and quantifying the interactions between Prolog programs and the memory architecture of modern computers. In a previous study of Prolog systems we have shown through simulation that Prolog applications usually, but not always, have good locality, both for deterministic and non-deterministic applications. We also showed that performance may strongly depend on garbage collection and on database operations. Our analysis left two questions unanswered: how well do our simulated results holds on actual hardware, and how much did our results depend on a specific configuration? In this work we use several simulation parameters and profiling counters to improve understanding of Prolog applications. We believe that our analysis is of interest to any system implementor who wants to understand his or her own system's memory performance. Copyright 2002 ACM.
