We consider a priority cell scheduling in the following scenario. High-speed cell networks accommodate constant bit rate (CBR) streams from real-time sources and unspecified bit rate (UBR) streams from non real-time sources. The real-time traffic requires guarantees of its delay time. On the other hand, the non real-time traffic is relatively tolerable to its delay time. We obtain the queueing delay distribution of cells from CBR streams. Further the average queueing delay of cells from UBR streams is obtained in some special cases. We provide some numerical results and discuss the effectiveness of quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees based on the statistical bound and the influence of UBR streams on the system performance.

The Solvent Selection Advisory System (SSAS) is a decision support system for aiding users in the preliminary selection of optimal solvents for carbon dioxide removal processes given different user specification and plant conditions. This paper describes an inference-network representation of the Solvent Selection Advisory System which has been previously implemented as a rule-based system. Two expert system shells, G2 and GDA from Gensym Corp. are used, and the implementations on the two shells are compared. The commercial expert system tools do not provide enough support for knowledge base construction and maintenance with respect to KA tools provided. HEMATOOL provides an easy way to overcome some of the problems of KA and knowledge base maintenance. HEMATOOL allows the domain expert to concentrate on various parts of the domain, e.g. parameters, one at a time. As new knowledge becomes available, the expat is in the position to maintain, to a certain extent, the knowledge base. However, in some situations the knowledge engineer will be still be required to render assistance. HEMATOOL is a prototype system which is currently being evaluated. In this paper we suggest an Object-Oriented approach towards KB modelling. Not all the domains are best modelled by the OO paradigm. The applicability of this approach, therefore, depends on the nature of the knowledge in the domain.

This work describes both the concepts used in an Object Manager for storage of medical images as one more data type associated to objects, and a support system developed to offer this kind of tool to medical application developers. The purpose of this work is to support the retrieval of images through queries based on the graphical contents of the stored images. The usual approach uses icons and textual attributes stored with the images to specify the queries. This work uses a novel modeling technique to define the 'image data type,' by means of which it is possible to decide, before the query itself, the key data of each image that must be extracted from the image when it is stored in the database, so the search can be accelerated when queries are issued. This approach enables building of expansible systems, where new image processing algorithms can be added easily, using its syntactic representation stored through an Image Meta-schema into the application database schema. This work shows how such a system has been implemented, and also provides a query language used to refer and execute these algorithms from inside the database management system.
