Mixed Reality (MR) simulation, in which a Virtual Reality (VR) system is used to simulate both the real and virtual components of an Augmented Reality (AR) system, has been proposed as a method for evaluating AR systems with greater levels of experimental control. However, factors such as the latency of the MR simulator may impact the validity of experimental results obtained with MR simulation. We present a study evaluating the effects of simulator latency on the equivalence of results from an MR simulator and a real AR system. We designed an AR experiment which required the participants to visually follow a virtual pipe around a small room filled with real targets and to find and identify the targets which were intersected by the pipe. We show that, with a 95% confidence interval, the results from all three simulated AR conditions fall well within one standard deviation of the real AR case.

What, if any, are the effects of the changes in distributed systems behavior on the social dynamics of distributed groups? The rapid evolution of cloud infrastructures, portable devices and multimedia services has enabled cooperation among strangers in online environments that lack quality of service guarantees. Group members experience delays and inconsistencies in the shared state. Previous research on delays focuses on tightly-coupled tasks and assumes that individual and group interests are aligned. In reality, individual participation in a group depends on how a participant weighs the value and the cost of cooperation. That tension is well captured in mixed-motive tasks (e.g., a social trap). A study was conducted, where 15 groups performed a loosely-coupled task that simulates social traps. Group members experienced a gradual degradation of system performance in the form of complex delays. Groups exhibited different adaptation patterns to the changes in the system behavior. There is no guarantee that group adaptation will always keep the status quo. System interventions are needed to maintain group dynamics. © 2012 IEEE.

Disaster relief responders aim to quickly locate and extract survivors from dangerous environments. This research explores the use of a collaborative guidance system for search-and-rescue in a complex building. We implemented and evaluated a proof-of-concept system that allowed a scene commander and responder to efficiently search a building using visual, nonverbal communication. Participants found the interface to be both intuitive and fun, and results suggest that the collaborative navigation system was effective. © 2012 IEEE.

In education and research, references play a key role. However, extracting and parsing references are difficult problems. One concern is that there are many styles of references;hence, given a surface form, identifying what style was employed is problematic, especially in heterogeneous collections of theses and dissertations, which cover many fields and disciplines, and where different styles may be used even in the same publication. We address these problems by drawing upon suitable knowledge found in the WWW. In particular, we research a two-stage classifier approach, involving multi-class classification with respect to reference styles, and partially solve the problem of parsing surface representations of references. We describe empirical evidence for the effectiveness of our approach and plans for improvement of our methods. © 2012 ACM.

Being able to debate, reflect, form opinions, consider counter evidence and make informed decisions is a foundation of civic life in democratic societies. Government benefits from broad participation in collective decision making in terms of sustainable outcomes (e.g., greater consensus) and quality of life in our cities and communities. These collective decision making capabilities are undermined by a strange combination of diminishing (or extinct) local print media, especially local newspapers, and by its obverse, a plethora of information and communication opportunities that are scattered across numerous disparate and decentralized websites and resources (e.g., webpages, RSS feeds, social network software, email, listservs, podcasts, tweets). To address this problem, a number of news aggregators have emerged that capture local content from dispersed sites. To facilitate civic engagement, these sites also need to support social interaction and information exchange. In this paper we review the state of the art in local news aggregation in the US and their support for social affordances (social trust, networks and interaction) that are essential to civic participation. We present a prototype we have developed for local news aggregation that supports social affordances. We summarize briefly the design strategies and techniques (e.g., algorithms) we used to cluster topics and user generated content derived from existing local sources. The prototype should lead to a replicable model for other US communities. © 2012 ACM.

Mobile phone users in rural parts of the developing world, especially Africa, adapt to lack of electricity, poverty, remote locations, unpredictable services, and second-hand technology. Meanwhile, the technology developers are forging ahead, designing for "smartphones," high-speed data packets, and Internet access, not the "dumb" phones and parsimonious voice calls of the rural householder. We draw from fieldwork in Kenya with mobile phone owners to relate specific practices and issues facing rural users. Problems such as "spoiled" phone batteries and "China-makes" suggest larger design implications. We use our findings to motivate a design agenda for the rural poor built on the assumption of off-grid use and limited power, simple cheap phones, and Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) protocol. A key part of this agenda calls for developing usable technologies aimed at the infrastructure rather than mobile phone interface level. © 2012 ACM.

In trying to address pressing community needs in the face of dwindling resources, many government agencies, local community groups, and members of the public have formed symbiotic partnerships at local and state levels to address significant community challenges by marshalling and leveraging community resources. As part of this broad movement of community-sourcing solutions, local communities are turning to new online civic engagement platforms to help motivate and coordinate local volunteerism and problem solving. These online civic engagement platforms help local residents, service-oriented organizations, and local governments collectively take action to address pressing local needs. This panel will consider key issues for e-government and communities by these online civic engagement platforms. © 2012 Authors.
