We study a novel information retrieval problem, where the query is a time series for a given time period, and the retrieval task is to find relevant documents in a text collection of the same time period, which contain topics that are correlated with the query time series. This retrieval problem arises in many text mining applications where there is a need to analyze text data in order to discover potentially causal topics. To solve this problem, we propose and study multiple retrieval algorithms that use the general idea of ranking text documents based on how well their terms are correlated with the query time series. Experiment results show that the proposed retrieval algorithm can effectively help users find documents that are relevant to the time series queries, which can help users analyze the variation patterns of the time series.

Vehicle detection in aerial images plays a key role in surveillance, transportation control and traffic monitoring. It forms an important aspect in the deployment of autonomous Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) in rescue and surveillance missions. In this paper, we propose a two-stage algorithm for efficient detection of cars in aerial images. We discuss how sophisticated detection technique may not give the best result when applied to large scale images with complicated backgrounds. We use a relaxed version of HOG (Histogram of Oriented Gradients) and SVM (Support Vector Machine) to extract hypothesis windows in the first stage. The second stage is based on discriminatively trained part-based models. We create a richer model to be used for detection from the hypothesis windows by detecting and locating parts in the root object. Using a two-stage detection procedure not only improves the accuracy of the overall detection but also helps us take complete advantage of the accuracy of sophisticated algorithms ruling out it's incompetence in real scenarios. We analyze the results obtained from Google Earth dataset and also the images taken from a camera mounted beneath a flying aircraft. With our approach we could achieve a recall rate of 90% with a precision of 94%.

In this paper, DWT-Based Multi-Adaptive Image Coding (DBMAIC) is proposed to increase compression performance for Frame Memory Reduction in LCD Overdrive. The DBMAIC development is based on DWT-Based Adaptive Mode Selection (DAMS)[9] integrated with Adaptive-Threshold Technique (ATT). ATT is proposed to reduce blocking effect and increase adaptability of DAMS. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is much better than DAMS and that of conventional schemes. © 2013 IEEE.

Very High Energy gamma-ray astronomy with the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is evolving towards the model of a public observatory. Handling, processing and archiving the large amount of data generated by the CTA instruments and delivering scientific products are some of the challenges in designing the CTA data Management. The participation of scientists from within CTA Consortium and from the greater worldwide scientific community necessitates a sophisticated scientific analysis system capable of providing unified and efficient user access to data, software and computing resources. data Management is designed to respond to three main issues: (i) the treatment and flow of data from remote telescopes;(ii) 'big-data' archiving and processing;(iii) and open data access. In this communication the overall technical design of the CTA data Management, current major developments and prototypes are presented.

Very recently, the study of social networks has received a huge attention since we can learn and understand many hidden properties of our society. This paper investigates the potential of social network analysis to select an effective leadership group of a society. Based on our real life observation, we establish three essential requirements for an effective leadership group, namely Influenceability, Partisanship, and Bipartisanship. Then, we formulate the problem of finding a minimum size leader group satisfying the three requirements as the minimum connected k-core dominating set problem (MCkCDSP), and show its NP-hardness. In addition, we introduce an extension of MCkCDSP, namely MCkCDSP-C, which assumes the society has a number of communities and requires at least one representative from each community should be in the leadership. At last, we propose an approximation algorithm for a subclass of MCkCDSP with k = 2, and show an α-approximation algorithm of MCkCDSP can be used to obtain an α-approximation algorithm of MCkCDSP-C. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

various organizations are dependent on structured database like Oracle, MySQL etc. but these database systems do not harness the requirements of all organizations like scalability, availability etc. When data and number of requests increases, structure database cannot handle huge data and requests efficiently. One of the solution to overcome these issues is to shift datacenters on NoSQL unstructured databases. In this paper we explain few NoSQL unstructured databases and present performance analysis of MongoDB. We compare the time required to insertion in different databases as well as searching with different number of threads in database with different number of entries. This work also studies the importance of the Sharding and Configuration of the cluster for MongoDB.

The existence of microcalcications (MCs) is an important marker of malignancy in breast cancer. In spite of the benets in mass detection for dense breasts, ultrasonography is believed that it might not reliably detect MCs. For computer aided diagnosis systems, however, accurate detection of MCs has the possibility of improving the performance in both Breast Imaging-Reporting and data System (BI-RADS) lexicon description for calcications and malignancy classication. We propose a new efficient and effective method for MC detection using image enhancement and threshold adjacency statistics (TAS). The main idea of TAS is to threshold an image and to count the number of white pixels with a given number of adjacent white pixels. Our contribution is to adopt TAS features and apply image enhancement to facilitate MC detection in ultrasound images. We employed fuzzy logic, tophat filter, and texture filter to enhance images for MCs. Using a total of 591 images, the classication accuracy of the proposed method in MC detection showed 82.75%, which is comparable to that of Haralick texture features (81.38%). When combined, the performance was as high as 85.11%. In addition, our method also showed the ability in mass classication when combined with existing features. In conclusion, the proposed method exploiting image enhancement and TAS features has the potential to deal with MC detection in ultrasound images efficiently and extend to the real-time localization and visualization of MCs. © 2013 SPIE.

Server clustering is a common design principle employed by many organisations who require high availability, scalability and easier management of their infrastructure. Servers are typically clustered according to the service they provide whether it be the application(s) installed, the role of the server or server accessibility for example. In order to optimize performance, manage load and maintain availability, servers may migrate from one cluster group to another making it difficult for server monitoring tools to continuously monitor these dynamically changing groups. Server monitoring tools are usually statically configured and with any change of group membership requires manual reconfiguration, an unreasonable task to undertake on large-scale cloud infrastructures. In this paper we present the Cloudlet Control and Management System (C2MS), a system for monitoring and controlling dynamic groups of physical or virtual servers within cloud infrastructures. The C2MS extends Ganglia - an open source scalable system performance monitoring tool - by allowing system administrators to define, monitor and modify server groups without the need for server reconfiguration. In turn administrators can easily monitor group and individual server metrics on large-scale dynamic cloud infrastructures where roles of servers may change frequently. Furthermore, we complement group monitoring with a control element allowing administrator-specified actions to be performed over servers within service groups as well as introduce further customized monitoring metrics. This paper outlines the design, implementation and evaluation of the C2MS.

With the increase of sensor and monitoring applications, data mining on streaming data is receiving increasing research attention. As data is continuously generated, mining algorithms need to be able to analyze the data in a one-pass fashion. In many applications the rate at which the data objects arrive varies greatly. This has led to anytime mining algorithms for classification or clustering. They successfully mine data until the a priori unknown point of interruption by the next data in the stream. In this work we investigate anytime outlier detection. Anytime outlier detection denotes the problem of determining within any period of time whether an object in a data stream is anomalous. The more time is available, the more reliable the decision should be. We introduce AnyOut, an algorithm capable of solving anytime outlier detection, and investigate different approaches to build up the underlying data structure. We propose a confidence measure for AnyOut that allows to improve the performance on constant data streams. We evaluate our method in thorough experiments and demonstrate its performance in comparison with established algorithms for outlier detection. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

An Otto prism coupling setup with a spoof plasmon surface underneath is the centerpiece of work by S. A. Maier and co-workers, in which terahertz liquid sensing with figures-of-merit as high as 49 are demonstrated. On page 543, water molecules are shown to go onto the spoof plasmon surface, which consists of linear arrays of subwavelength grooves, tightly confining the spoof plasmons. The plasmons are sensitive to the refractive index of the dielectric filling the grooves, and phase jumps at spoof plasmon resonances provide the readout response. © 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
