As neural networks are increasingly deployed on mobile and distributed computing platforms, there is a need to lower latency and increase computational speed while decreasing power and memory usage. Rather than using FPGAs as accelerators in tandem with CPUs or GPUs, we directly encode individual neural network layers as combinational logic within FPGA hardware. Utilizing binarized neural networks minimizes the arithmetic computation required, shrinking latency to only the signal propagation delay. We evaluate size-optimization strategies and demonstrate network compression via weight quantization and weight-model unification, achieving 96% of the accuracy of baseline MNIST digit classification models while using only 3% of the memory. We further achieve 86% decrease in model footprint, 8mW dynamic power consumption, and $< 9\text{ns}$ latency, validating the versatility and capability of feature-strength-based pruning approaches for binarized neural networks to flexibly meet performance requirements amid application resource constraints.

The Smart Grid concept evolved from the idea of intelligent and secure management of electrical grid infrastructure components and their communication through sustainable integration with the state-of-the-art technologies. This research focuses on emerging quantum computing-assisted security and its application in the Smart Grid. The robustness of electrical grid is increasing every day through advancements in grid infrastructure management which include outage control, relay protection, reliable distribution, renewable energy resource integration, and energy trading. Quantum Computing emerges as a formidable solution for application in the smart grid due to its processing capability and scale. Its application and scope are evolving every day with the recent developments in Quantum Chips which could pave the way for emerging Quantum-Chain-of-Things (QCoT). This research focuses on providing robust security in smart grids through Quantum Physical Unclonable Functions (QPUF) primitive, a quantum-hardware assisted security approach driven by micro manufacturing quantum process variations for generating a quantum digital fingerprint driven by quantum mechanics principles. The QPUF experimental evaluation in this research was performed to uniquely fingerprint various electrical grid entities providing a sustainable and secure flow of communication. Experimental evaluation shows a robust and reliable extraction of quantum digital fingerprints from noisy IBM quantum systems. The evaluation shows an impressive 86% keys achieving 100% reliability.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is an important domain of healthcare. First responders save millions of lives per year. Machine learning and sensing technologies are actively being developed to support first responders in their EMS activities. However, there are significant challenges to overcome in developing these new solutions. One of the main challenges is the limitations of existing methods for EMS text mining, and developing a highly accurate language model for the EMS domain. Several important Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformer (BERT) models for medical domains, i.e., BioBERT and ClinicalBERT, have significantly influenced biomedical text mining tasks. But extracting information from the EMS domain is a separate challenge due to the uniqueness of the EMS domain, and the significant scarcity of a high-quality EMS corpus. In this research, we propose EMS-BERT - a BERT model specifically developed for EMS text-mining tasks. For data augmentation on our small, classified EMS corpus which consists of nearly 2.4M words, we use a simultaneous pre-training method for transfer-learning relevant information from medical, bio-medical, and clinical domains; and train a high-performance BERT model. Our thorough evaluation shows at least 2% to as much as 11% improvement of F-1 scores for EMS-BERT on different classification tasks, i.e., entity recognition, relation extraction, and inferring missing information when compared both with existing state-of-the-art clinical entity recognition tools, and with various medical BERT models.
