In this paper we present a system that uses computer vision techniques and a deformable 3D human model, in order to recognize the posture of a monitored person, given the segmented human silhouette from the background. The video data are acquired indoors from a fixed fish-eye camera placed in the living environment. The implemented 3D human model collaborates with a fish-eye camera model, allowing the calculation of the real human position in the 3D-space and consequently recognizing the posture of the monitored person. The paper discusses the details of the human model and fish-eye camera model, as well as the posture recognition methodology. Initial results are also presented for a small number of video sequences, of walking or standing humans.

This paper highlights a new detection method based on higher spectral analysis techniques to distinguish the Electrocardiogram (ECG) of normal healthy subjects from that with a cardiac ischaemia (CI) patient. Higher spectral analysis techniques provide in-dept. information other than available conventional spectral analysis techniques usually used with ECG analysis. They provide information within frequency parts and information regarding phase associations. Bispectral analysis- Bispectrum and Quadratic Phase Coupling techniques are utilized to detect as well as to characterize phase combined harmonics in ECG. The work is developed, tested and validated using Normal Sinus Rhythm Data from the MIT-BIH Database and CI data from the ST Petersburg European ST-T Database. The results validate the efficacy of the introduced method by maintaining 100% sensitivity and achieving 93.33% positive predictive accuracy. The simplicity and robustness of the proposed method makes it feasible to be used within available ECG systems. © 2014 Informa UK Ltd.

Over the last decade or so, significant research has focused on defining Quality of Experience (QoE) of Multimedia Systems and identifying the key factors that collectively determine it. Some consensus thus exists as to the role of System Factors, Human Factors and Context Factors. In this paper, the notion of context is broadened to include information gleaned from simultaneous out-of-band channels, such as social network trend analytics, that can be used if interpreted in a timely manner, to help further optimise QoE. A case study involving simulation of HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) and load balancing in a content distribution network (CDN) in a flash crowd scenario is presented with encouraging results.

This work proposes a policy iteration procedure for the synthesis of optimal and globally stabilizing control policies for Linear Time Invariant (LTI) Asymptotically Null-controllable with Bounded Inputs (ANCBI) systems. This class includes systems with eigenvalues on the imaginary axis (possibly repeated) but no pole with positive real part. The proposed policy iteration relies on a class of piecewise quadratic Lyapunov functions which is non-differentiable, but continuous, and polynomial in both the state and the deadzone functions of the input signals. The second step of the policy iteration is based on a piecewise control policy improvement. An important aspect of the proposed piecewise policy is that at each step of the iteration the computed policy is globally stabilizing and the existence of an improving value function is guaranteed as well. The solution to the inequalities which is required to hold at each step of the policy iteration, is obtained by solving Sum-of-Squares Programs (SOSP) that can be efficiently implemented with semidefinite programming (SDP) solvers.

In foetal electrocardiographic monitoring, assessment of foetal QT (FQT) in identifying foetal hypoxia has been limited mainly due to the lack of available public databases with expert labels. Our proposed platform, CrowdLabel, a web-based open-source annotation system, was developed for crowdsourcing medical labels from multiple expert and/or non-expert annotators. We describe the platform and an example of use; to improve FQT estimation by creating reference labels against which automated algorithms can be benchmarked. A total of 501, 30s segments were extracted from 15 foetal ECG (FECG) recordings from a private database. 23 volunteers participated in the study and provided a total of 7,307 FQT annotations, which were aggregated using a probabilistic label aggregator (PLA). The best annotator identified by the PLA had a standard deviation in the change of FQT annotations of 13.35 ms and 35.52 ms when labelling FECG with `very good' and `poor' signal quality respectively. The PLA does not require any ground truth to identify the best annotator or annotations. Annotator accuracy was also shown to be a function of objective signal quality measures. The feasibility of the CrowdLabel annotation system for ECG crowdsourcing with an unknown ground truth, as well as the results of the first experiment conducted using such a platform have been demonstrated.

Parameterized probabilistic complex computational (P 2 C 2 ) models are being increasingly used in computational systems biology for analyzing biological systems. A key challenge is to build mechanistic P 2 C 2 models by combining prior knowledge and empirical data, given that certain system properties are unknown. These unknown components are incorporated into a model as parameters and determining their values has traditionally been a process of trial and error. We present a new algorithmic procedure for discovering parameters in agent-based models of biological systems against behavioral specifications mined from large data-sets. Our approach uses Bayesian model checking, sequential hypothesis testing, and stochastic optimization to synthesize parameters of P 2 C 2 models. We demonstrate our algorithm by discovering the amount and schedule of doses of bacterial lipopolysaccharide in a clinical agent-based model of the dynamics of acute inflammation that guarantee a set of desired clinical outcomes with high probability.

Knowing the arterial geometry might be helpful in the assessment of a plaque rupture event. We present a proof of concept study implementing a novel method which can predict the evolution in time of the atheromatic plaque in carotids using only statistical features which are extracted from the arterial geometry. Four feature selection methods were compared: Quadratic Programming Feature Selection (QPFS), Minimal Redundancy Maximal Relevance (mRMR), Mutual Information Quotient (MIQ) and Spectral Conditional Mutual Information (SPECCMI). The classifier used is the Support Vector Machines (SVM) with linear and Gaussian kernels. The maximum accuracy that was achieved in predicting the variation in the mean value of the Lumen distance from the centerline and the thickness was 71.2% and 70.7% respectively.

At the beginning of the new century, we started with an educational project aimed at the joint development and shared use of teaching materials for software engineering education. The aim was to transfer knowledge, as well as to save expenses. Over the years, our cooperation did not only cover the development of the course, but also its delivery, e.g. by guest lecturing. This paper reports on the experience gained in a multi-country project. Both success factors and problems are outlined. © 2014 IEEE.

Craniosynostosis, a disorder in which one or more fibrous joints of the skull fuse prematurely, causes skull malformation and may be associated with increased intracranial pressure and developmental delays. In order to perform medical research studies that relate phenotypic abnormalities to outcomes such as cognitive ability or results of surgery, biomedical researchers need an automated methodology for quantifying the degree of abnormality of the disorder. This paper addresses that need by proposing a set of features derived from CT scans of the skull that can be used for this purpose. A thorough set of experiments is used to evaluate the features as compared to two human craniofacial experts in a ranking evaluation.

Craniosynostosis, a disorder in which one or more fibrous joints of the skull fuse prematurely, causes skull deformity and is associated with increased intracranial pressure and developmental delays. Although clinicians can easily diagnose craniosynostosis and can classify its type, being able to quantify the condition is an important problem in craniofacial research. While several papers have attempted this quantification through statistical models, the methods have not been intuitive to biomedical researchers and clinicians who want to use them. The goal of this work was to develop a general platform upon which new quantification measures could be developed and tested. The features reported in this paper were developed as basic shape measures, both single-valued and vector-valued, that are extracted from a single plane projection of the 3D skull. This technique allows us to process images that would otherwise be eliminated in previous systems due to poor resolution, noise or imperfections on their CT scans. We test our new features on classification tasks and also compare their performance to previous research. In spite of its simplicity, the classification accuracy of our new features is significantly higher than previous results on head CT scan data from the same research studies.
