A major challenge posed by real-world applications involving spatial information deals with the uncertainty inherent in the data. One type of uncertainty in spatial objects may come from their existence, which is expressed by a probability accompanying the spatial value of an object reflecting the confidence of the object's existence. A challenging query type over existentially uncertain data is the search of the Nearest Neighbour (NN), as the likelihood of an object to be the NN of the query object does not only depend on its distances from other objects, but also from their existence. In this paper, we present exact and approximate statistical methodologies for supporting cost models for Probabilistic Thresholding NN (PTNN) queries that deal with arbitrarily distributed data points and existential uncertainty, with the aid of appropriate novel histograms, sampling and statistical approximations. Our cost model can be also modified in order to support Probabilistic Ranking NN (PRNN) queries with the aid of sampling. The accuracy of our approaches is exhibited through extensive experimentation on synthetic and real datasets. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

The number of visually impaired people is increasing year by year. Although attention has been given to the needs of people with disabilities, most of the discussion has focused on social welfare, while talk about assistive technology for people with disabilities is rare. The blind need training courses for reconstruction and rehabilitation. Orientation and mobility (O and M) training is important for visually impaired people, teaching safe, efficient and effective travel skills. Skills learned from O and M training courses can help the blind walk on the street safely. Crossing the street is especially dangerous, since blind people cannot see traffic lights, and rely mostly on sound for information about their environment. Thus, learning to recognize the varied sounds of vehicles and determining the direction and speed of moving vehicles is critical. In this paper, we propose an interactive game with 3D sound that simulates a busy street environment. The proposed game tries to build a virtual environment with 3D sound to help visually impaired people learn to cross the street safely. As the proposed training game is designed for the blind, the technologies of Kinect and Text-to-Speech (TTS) are used in the human-computer interface in the proposed game, so that they can use the game independently.

Behavior, including non verbal, expressiveness is an integral part of the communication process since it can provide information on the emotional state and the user's performance when the aim of the interaction is measurable. Long term temporal measurements can also assist in monitoring the user for either emergencies or long term mood instabilities. Current article presents research work on the computational formalization and analysis of full body 3D expressivity in Natural (bodily) Interaction within the framework of Pervasive Assistance. Expressivity dimensions are selected as the most complete approach to body expressivity modeling, since they cover the entire spectrum of expressivity parameters related to emotion and affect. In this study five expressivity parameters are computationally formalized, using different approaches based on silhouette, limbs position and joints rotation, for each expressivity feature. These approaches are then evaluated in terms of their effectiveness in modeling the expressivity aspect in question. The modeling effectiveness of each approach is assessed using Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) and its coefficients on the automatically extracted parameters, defined in the computational formalization, against an experimental dataset consisting of extreme expressions (positive and negative) of the investigated expressivity aspects. The The experimental results confirm that the proposed Fading Silhouette Motion Volumes (FMSV) approach, is the most effective in modeling body expressivity. © 2013 ACM.

In this paper, a novel fuzzy measure, high order lambda measure, was proposed, based on the Choquet integral with respect to this new measure, a novel composition forecasting model which composed the GM(1,1) forecasting model, the time series model and the exponential smoothing model was also proposed. For evaluating the efficiency of this improved composition forecasting model, an experiment with a real data by using the 5 fold cross validation mean square error was conducted. The performances of Choquet integral composition forecasting model with the P-measure, Lambda-measure, L-measure and high order lambda measure, respectively, a ridge regression composition forecasting model and a multiple linear regression composition forecasting model and the traditional linear weighted composition forecasting model were compared. The experimental results showed that the Choquet integral composition forecasting model with respect to the high order lambda measure has the best performance. © (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

Modern parallel computing systems, such as MapReduce, often assume data values are uniformly distributed. However, in the real world, data is often highly skewed, which may cause workload imbalance among parallel running tasks. In this paper, we study the reduce-phase skew problem in MapReduce, where reduce tasks are often assgined imbalance load (in terms of key groups). We introduce a sketch-based data structure for capturing MapReduce key group size statistics and present an optimal packing algorithm which assigns the key groups to the reducers in a load balancing manner. We perform an empirical evaluation with several real and synthetic datasets over two distinct types of applications. The results show that our load balancing algorithm can strongly mitigate the reduce-phase skew. It can decrease the overall job completion time by 45.5% of the default settings in Hadoop and by 38.3% in comparison to the state-of-the-art solution.

Recent research has introduced load balancing schemes that are aware of the input data distribution (i.e., data profile) to mitigate data skew and fully exploit the parallel capability of the MapReduce framework to support record linkage. However, existing solutions face a significant scalability issue when applied to massive data sets with millions or billions of blocks (a basic unit in record linkage) because their data profiles can not be maintained precisely in an efficient manner. The goal of this paper is to introduce a profiling method based on the notion of a sketch, which allows for a compact scalable solution for maintaining block size statistics. In addition, we propose two load balancing algorithms to work over sketch-based profiles while solving the data skew problem associated with record linkage. We provide an analytical analysis and extensive experiments (using Hadoop), with real and controlled synthetic data sets, to illustrate the effectiveness of our solution. The experimental results show that our load balancing algorithms can decrease the overall job completion time by 71.56% and 70.73% of the default settings in Hadoop using a set of DBLP data sets, which have 2.5 to 50.4 million records.

In recent, domestic livestock farms are receiving enormous damages through various livestock diseases that are highly contagious such as foot-and-mouth disease and avian influenza (AI). Additionally, they are experiencing difficulties also financially as a result of decrease in income from production cost increase. This paper will propose a livestock disease forecasting system for diagnosing in advance livestock disease status in real-time through image information of livestock by using thermal image camera. The proposed system can extract livestock temperature information through images collected from thermal image camera to diagnose in advance livestock disease status through Android-based smart phone. Based on this, it is expected to contribute to the enhancement of the productivity of livestock farms and their competitiveness by minimizing damages from livestock disease by preventing disease damages in advance. ©2013 SERSC.

This paper concerns multimodal transport systems (MTS) represented by a supernetworks in which several unimodal networks are connected by transfer links and focuses on the scheduling problems encountered in these systems. Assuming unimodal networks are modeled as cyclic lines, i.e. the routes determining stream-like moving transportation means, a problem of an alternative itinerary selection for an origin-destination (O-D) trip in the context of emergency relief is considered. Emergency relief dealing with the contingency events and deciding on MTS robustness can be evaluated in terms of feasible itineraries for assumed (O-D) trip. Since itinerary planning problem, constitutes a common routing and scheduling decision faced by travelers, hence the main question regards of itinerary replanning and particularly a method aimed at prototyping of mode sequences and paths selections. The declarative model of multimodal processes driven itinerary planning problem is our main contribution. Illustrative examples providing alternative itineraries in some cases of MTS malfunction are presented. © IFAC.

The application of Model Predictive Control schemes to real world complex plants, such as freeway traffic systems, is sometimes limited because of the necessity of tuning the control action depending on the system operating condition, and the significant computational burden inherent to the methodology. The MPC-based scheme presented in this paper aims at overcoming the mentioned limitations by using a supervisory control approach. The supervisor, at each time step, chooses among three possible actions: i) the controller needs to be changed and the new control action is computed, ii) no change is made to the controller, but it is necessary to recompute the control action, iii) neither is the controller varied, nor it is necessary to recompute the control action and the already determined control law is kept. In other terms, the control sequence is recomputed according to an event-triggered mechanism in which the control action is properly tuned to the system conditions. In the paper, the proposed control scheme is developed with reference to a class of non-linear systems admitting a model of Mixed Logical Dynamical type, which is suitable to describe freeway traffic systems, and the input-to-state practical stability of the controlled system is proved. Finally, the application of the proposed control scheme to a freeway traffic system is discussed and studied via simulation.
