The purpose of this paper is to review existing sensor and sensor network ontologies to understand whether they can be reused as a basis for a manufacturing perception sensor ontology, or if the existing ontologies hold lessons for the development of a new ontology. We develop an initial set of requirements that should apply to a manufacturing perception sensor ontology. These initial requirements are used in reviewing selected existing sensor ontologies. Additionally, we present our developed sensor ontology thus far that incorporates a refined list of requirements. This paper describes 1) extending and refining the requirements; 2) proposing hierarchical structures for verifying the purposes of the ontology; 3) choosing appropriate tools and languages (e.g., OWL (Web Ontology Language) [1] and SensorML (Sensor Markup Language) [2]) to support such an ontology; and 4) extending the Semantic Sensor Network (SSN) ontology with a set of refined requirements (i.e., our developed ontology). This work will be proposed as a standard within the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) Ontologies for Robotics Automation (ORA) Working Group [3].

This paper presents an integration of Wavelet and Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) based lighting normalization, and shifting-mean Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) based face classifiers for face recognition. The aims are to provide robust recognition rate against large face variability due to lighting variations and to avoid retraining problem of the classical LDA for incremental data. In addition, the compact holistic features is employed for dimensional reduction of the raw face image. From the experimental results, the proposed method gives sufficient and robust achievement in terms of recognition rate and requires short computational time.
Vertex deletion and edge deletion problems play a central role in Parameterized Complexity. Examples include classical problems like Feedback Vertex Set, Odd Cycle Transversal, and Chordal Deletion. The study of analo...

Pervasive healthcare applications utilizing body sensor networks generate a vast amount of data that need to be managed and stored for processing and future usage. Cloud computing among with the Internet of Things (IoT) concept is a new trend for efficient managing and processing of sensor data online. This paper presents a platform based on Cloud Computing for management of mobile and wearable healthcare sensors, demonstrating this way the IoT paradigm applied on pervasive healthcare.

Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) aims at providing unobtrusive support to frail and elderly people for their daily life based on their context and situation. To this end, systems and services are required which are user-centric and adaptable towards the needs and capabilities of the people in need of care. The continuous integration of leading-edge technologies, such as cloud and wireless communication technologies, in the context of the Internet of the Things (IoT), can meet this requirement by enabling a new form of communication between frail and elderly people, their environment and relevant groups of care givers. However, for IoT-based systems to reach their full potential, sound answers need to be provided to the important security questions arisen, particularly those regarding authentication of entities (people and environmental objects) and data privacy. This paper presents a system based on Gateways (GW) that aggregate health sensor data and resolve security issues through digital certificates and PKI data encryption.
