We present Mint, a programming model that enables the non-expert to enjoy the performance benefits of hand coded CUDA without becoming entangled in the details. Mint targets stencil methods, which are an important class of scientific applications. We have implemented the Mint programming model with a source-to-source translator that generates optimized CUDA C from traditional C source. The translator relies on annotations to guide translation at a high level. The set of pragmas is small, and the model is compact and simple. Yet, Mint is able to deliver performance competitive with painstakingly hand-optimized CUDA. We show that, for a set of widely used stencil kernels, Mint realized 80% of the performance obtained from aggressively optimized CUDA on the 200 series NVIDIA GPUs. Our optimizations target three dimensional kernels, which present a daunting array of optimizations. © 2011 ACM.

Microfluidic biochips are replacing the conventional biochemical analyzers, and are able to integrate on-chip all the basic functions for biochemical analysis. The "digital" microfluidic biochips (DMFBs) are manipulating liquids not as a continuous flow, but as discrete droplets on a two-dimensional array of electrodes. Basic microfluidic operations, such as mixing and dilution, are performed on the array, by routing the corresponding droplets on a series of electrodes. The challenges facing biochips are similar to those faced by microelectronics some decades ago. To meet the challenges of increasing design complexity, computer-aided-design (CAD) tools are being developed for DMFBs. This paper provides an overview of DMFBs and describes emerging CAD tools for the automated synthesis and optimization of DMFB designs, from fluidic-level synthesis and chip-level design to testing. Design automations are expected to alleviate the burden of manual optimization of bioassays, time-consuming chip designs, and costly testing and maintenance procedures. With the assistance of CAD tools, users can concentrate on the development and abstraction of nanoscale bioassays while leaving chip optimization and implementation details to CAD tools. Advances in sensor technology, processing speed, high-speed networking, and the massive digital storages are being incorporated into today's healthcare practice. Tremendous amounts of medical multimedia data are captured and recorded in digital format during the daily clinical practice, medical research, and education. Intelligent medical knowledge discovery and retrieval from medical multimedia data is very useful and highly desirable. Motivated by the huge potential benefits, we have organized the ACM International Workshop on Medical Multimedia Analysis and Retrieval (MMAR2011), held in conjunction with The Annual ACM International Conference on Multimedia (ACM Multimedia 2011). In this paper, we first introduce the background and overview of the workshop. Then we introduce the workshop review process, followed with a brief introduction of the accepted papers in this workshop, as well as the conclusion. © 2011 ACM.

In this work we build the first BI-RADS parser for Portuguese free texts, modeled after existing approaches to extract BI-RADS features from English medical records. Our concept finder uses a semantic grammar based on the BI-RADS lexicon and on iterative transferred expert knowledge. We compare the performance of our algorithm to manual annotation by a specialist in mammography. Our results show that our parser's performance is comparable to the manual method.

Communication network expansion technology using autonomous robot introduces three research fields which is network expansion, network routing, and localization. On this research, we tried to develop an efficient robot formation and network expansion that is implemented using Open Dynamics Engine (ODE) library and network routing algorithm. This paper also shows some modifications that have been done to improve the performance of robot formation and network routing process. In robot formation and network expansion process, step that has been done is multiple source implementations to keep communication linkage between communication towers. Besides that, we developed new routing protocol based on cluster based routing concept. The result of simulation shows that our proposed communication network expansion technology is visible to be implemented.

In this paper we show how the possibility of recording simultaneously the cerebral neuroelectric activity in different subjects (EEG hyperscanning) during the execution of different tasks can return useful information about the "internal" cerebral state of the subjects. We present the results obtained by EEG hyperscannings during ecological task (such as the execution of a card game) as well as those obtained in couples of subjects during the performance of the Prisoner's Dilemma Game. The simultaneous recordings of couples of interacting subjects allows to observe and to model directly the neural signature of human interactions in order to understand the cerebral processes generating and generated by social cooperation or competition. Results obtained in a study of different groups recorded during the card game revealed a larger activity in prefrontal and anterior cingulated cortex in different frequency bands for the player that leads the game when compared to other players. Results collected in a population of 10 subjects during the performance of the Prisoner's Dilemma suggested that the most consistently activated structure is the orbitofrontal region (roughly described by the Brodmann area 10) during the condition of competition in both the tasks. It could be speculated whether the pattern of cortical connectivity between different cortical areas in different subjects could be employed as a tool for assessing the outcome of the task in advance. © 2011 IEEE.

Depression is a common but ominous psychological disorder that threatens one's quality of life. The screening and grading of depression is still a manual process and grades are often determined in ranges, e.g., "mild to moderate' and "moderate to severe' instead of making them more specific as "mild', "moderate', and "severe'. Such grading is confusing and affects the management plan. Given this practical issue, the present paper attempts to differentiate depression grades more accurately using a Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) classifier, built in MATLAB. The overall accuracy of the classifier is 100% for mild, 77% for moderate and 90% for severe grades with a good model fit (R=94%).

To complement our paper “A Distributed Architecture For Heterogeneous Multi-Sensor Task Allocation” published in DCOSS 2011 conference proceedings, we will demonstrate the current implementation of our architecture for Multi-Sensor Task Allocation (MSTA) shown in Figure 1. This consists of a prototype interface for task submission, and a simulated sensor network serving other mobile users on the field competing for the same sensing resources. The prototype interface is implemented on two different mobile devices (iPhone & iPad 1 ), dynamically interacting with a heterogeneous sensor network simulated in Java on top of the REPAST Symphony 2 discrete time simulation environment. Background: Competitions in text mining have been used to measure the performance of automatic text processing solutions against a manually annotated gold standard corpus (GSC). The preparation of the GSC is time-consuming and costly and the final corpus consists at the most of a few thousand documents annotated with a limited set of semantic groups. To overcome these shortcomings, the CALBC project partners (PPs) have produced a large-scale annotated biomedical corpus with four different semantic groups through the harmonisation of annotations from automatic text mining solutions, the first version of the Silver Standard Corpus (SSC-I). The four semantic groups are chemical entities and drugs (CHED), genes and proteins (PRGE), diseases and disorders (DISO) and species (SPE). This corpus has been used for the First CALBC Challenge asking the participants to annotate the corpus with their text processing solutions. Results: All four PPs from the CALBC project and in addition, 12 challenge participants (CPs) contributed annotated data sets for an evaluation against the SSC-I. CPs could ignore the training data and deliver the annotations from their genuine annotation system, or could train a machine-learning approach on the provided pre-annotated data. In general, the performances of the annotation solutions were lower for entities from the categories CHED and PRGE in comparison to the identification of entities categorized as DISO and SPE. The best performance over all semantic groups were achieved from two annotation solutions that have been trained on the SSC-I. The data sets from participants were used to generate the harmonised Silver Standard Corpus II (SSC-II), if the participant did not make use of the annotated data set from the SSC-I for training purposes. The performances of the participants' solutions were again measured against the SSC-II. The performances of the annotation solutions showed again better results for DISO and SPE in comparison to CHED and P

The pulse rate in the human species is a significant factor in oriental medicine. Pulse wave is a potential energy which has been generated by main artery expansion from the left ventricle, transforms into kinetic energy and passes through the vessel wall to the peripheral nervous system. In this paper, observations of patterns will be used to determine the blood circulation pulse wave which has been differentiated twice through the process of APG (Accelerated Photoplethysmo Graph). Moreover in this paper, it proposed the algorithm which diagnoses the patient's health condition using intelligence method. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.
