In this work, micromachined silicon nanoporous membranes (MSNM) are introduced as a means for removing endotoxin from water for medical uses. MSNM with critical pore dimensions of 35 nm and 42 nm and a 0.2 μm syringe filter were challenged with feed solutions containing endotoxin activities of around 20,000 EU/mL. MSNM filters showed a reduction in endotoxin activities by 2 to 3 orders of magnitude. © 2008 TRF.

We present a novel active mask framework for the segmentation of fluorescence microscope images of cells, and in particular, for the segmentation of the Golgi body as well as cell- volume computation. We demonstrate that the algorithm is able to efficiently segment a stack of images and successfully assign multiple pieces of the Golgi body in a 2D image to the cell to which they belong. Further, we demonstrate that our algorithm is more accurate than manual segmentation of these images.

Gait abnormalities are a recognised risk factor for falling in the elderly and variability in gait has been shown to be a measurable predictor of falls. We carried out a footswitch evaluation of the temporal parameters of gait of elderly fallers with a primary diagnosis of Orthostatic Hypotension, elderly fallers without a diagnosis of Orthostatic Hypotension and a control group of healthy elderly non-fallers. We hypothesized that elderly persons with Orthostatic Hypotension are falling purely as a consequence of their vascular abnormalities and are not falling for the same reasons as regular elderly fallers, including biomechanical irregularities. Therefore it was assumed that their gait pattern would not be similar to that of regular elderly fallers but instead would resemble that of healthy elderly non-fallers. Results show that elderly fallers with or without a diagnosis of Orthostatic Hypotension tend to spend more time in the stance phase of gait, possibly due to a fear of falling. Elderly fallers with a diagnosis of Orthostatic Hypotension have similar levels of gait variability as healthy elderly Controls. These are significantly less than elderly fallers without Orthostatic Hypotension. Therefore elderly fallers with a diagnosis of Orthostatic Hypotension may not be falling for the same reasons as regular elderly fallers.

This paper proposes a generic design for 3D model retrieval. It has been developed in cooperation with EADS, which deals with computer Aided Design / computer Aided engineering (below CAD/CAE) data through the product life cycle. Sharing these models with users across the enterprise is a challenging task. CAD/CAE models may be hundreds of megabytes large and stored in proprietary formats. Browsing and previewing this data efficiently requires new tools. One way to leverage the collaboration in and outside of CAD domains is to offer through a repository an access to a neutral 3D data format. Also functionalities for semantic enrichment of 3D models, for the retrieval of context sensitive information and for 3D model retrieval based on 3D similarity search and CBIR techniques should be provided.

In this paper, we present a mechanism for automatic management of the memory hierarchy, including secondary storage, in the context of a global address space parallel programming framework. The programmer specifies the parallelism and locality in the computation. The scheduling of the computation into stages, together with the movement of the associated data between secondary storage and global memory, and between global memory and local memory, is automatically managed. A novel formulation of hypergraph partitioning is used to model the optimization problem of minimizing disk I/O. Experimental evaluation using a sub-computation from the quantum chemistry domain shows a reduction in the disk I/O cost by up to a factor of 11, and a reduction in turnaround, time by up to 49%, as compared to alternative approaches used in state-of-the-art quantum chemistry codes. © 2007 IEEE.

This paper presents modeling concern to construct context data format that is applicable for context-aware computing. The first concern deals with developing abstract model at application entity which is defined independently from presentation entity. Regarding to this matter, the context data format have been constructed as higher and lower abstraction model presented in OWL and XML instance. The second concern deals with mapping lower abstraction model to exchange format. JSON exchange format is proposed in this paper as the alternative to the incumbent XML. The context data format, which is constructed at lower abstraction model, has been transformed to JSON by applying XSLT rule. As a result, JSON exchange format is obviously smaller than XML in term of exchange format size.

In this paper we introduce the NTCIR6 Opinion Analysis Pilot Task, information about the Chinese, Japanese, and English data, plans for future opinion analysis tasks at NTCIR, and a brief overview of the evaluation results. This pilot task is a sentence-level opinion identification and polarity detection task run over data from a comparable corpus in three languages: Chinese, English, and Japanese. We have manually annotated documents for this task in each language, producing what we believe to be the first multilingual opinion analysis data set over comparable data. Six participants submitted Chinese system results, three Japanese, and six English for this pilot task. We plan to release the data to the research community, and hope to spur further research into cross-lingual opinion analysis and its use in other NLP tasks. In particular, we look forward to researchers using this data to investigate cross-cultural perspective differences based on automatic sentiment analysis. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

Models of behavior mining from logs in adaptive systems are one from many methods how to obtain useful information for personalized navigation. Target of this paper is to describe modified results of full scan algorithm used to creation recommended links to concepts. For creation recommended links is used technique of traversal patterns. Established weights up to concepts and links along with the results of full scan algorithm created relevant recommended links within the scope of all subject matter and within the scope of topic in actual concept. The fundamental part is facilitating orientation for user in hyperspace.

Lung transplantation is the treatment of choice for end-stage pulmonary diseases. A limited donor supply has resulted in 4000 patients on the waiting list. Currently, 10-20% of donor organs are deemed suitable under the selection criteria, of which 15-25% fails due to primary graft dysfunction (PGD). In this study, we attempt to further our understanding of PGD by observing the changes in gene expression across donor lungs that developed PGD versus those that did not. Our second goal is to use a machine learning tool - support vector machine (SVM), to distinguish unsuitable donor lungs from suitable donor lungs, based on the gene expression data. Classification results for distinguishing suitable and unsuitable lungs for transplantation using a SVM were promising. This is the first such attempt to use human lungs used for transplantation and combine the identification of a molecular signature for PGD, with machine learning methods for donor lung prediction. ©2007 IEEE.

We present the details of a real-time design and implementation of an auditory-nerve (AN) model on Motorola's DSP56367, a 150 MIPS audio digital signal processor (DSP). Sensory processing is highly nonlinear and time variant and so are the computational models that are derived to simulate these processes. Complex signal processing models have been derived to predict essential AN properties. However, their use is limited due to large processing time requirements. Our DSP solution makes fast real-time AN simulations possible and thus allows an experimentalist to change model parameters on the fly. This can speed up testing of several sound coding/decoding strategies hypothesized to occur in the human brain.
