Vocal interaction research has primarily been focused on the use of systems for automatic speech recognition and synthesis. Whilst ASR has been successful in various domains, it can be impractical in some contexts of use such as in time-sensitive and continuous controls and in applications involving users with speech impairment. This workshop aims to discuss the state of the art in vocal interaction methods that go beyond word recognition by exploiting the information contained within non-verbal vocalizations (e.g. pitch, volume, or timbre). The overarching objective of this workshop is to sketch a research agenda on the topic of the emerging discipline of non-verbal vocal interaction and its implications for the design of interactive systems. The workshop will be of interest to researchers, designers, developers, and users that are interested or would benefit from use of the non-verbal interaction.

We propose a new class of equal-norm tight frames termed lapped tight frame transforms (LTFTs). These can be seen as a redundant counterpart to bases known as lapped orthogonal transforms (LOTs) introduced by Malvar and Cassereau, as well as an infinite-dimensional counterpart to harmonic tight frames (HTFs). To construct LTFTs, we seed them from LOTs and show that, in a specific case, the process preserves the equal norm. As both their basis counterpart LOTs as well as their finite-dimensional one HTFs, LTFTs possess many desirable properties, such as equal norm and efficient implementation.

We propose an adaptive multiresolution (MR) approach to the classification of fingerprint images. The system adds MR decomposition in front of a generic classifier consisting of feature computation and classification in each MR subspace, yielding local decisions, which are then combined into a global decision using a weighting algorithm. In our previous work on classification of protein subcellular location images, we showed that the space-frequency localized information in the MR subspaces adds significantly to the discriminative power of the system. Here, we go one step farther; We develop a new weighting method which allows for the discriminative power of each subband to be expressed and examined within each class. This, in turn, allows us to evaluate the importance of the information contained within a specific subband. Moreover, we develop a pruning procedure to eliminate the subbands that do not contain useful information. This leads to potential identification of the appropriate MR decomposition both on a per class basis and for a given dataset. With this new approach, we make the system adaptive, flexible as well as more accurate and efficient.

Taiwan started to be an 'aging society' from 1993, and the aging process will progress more rapidly due to markedly decreased child birth in recent year. Facing very high old age dependency ratio as 1 to 2 in year 2030 which means every two working age persons (age 15 - 64 years) have to support one elderly people. That would be an enormous burden for every family and society. In this study a U-Care system was developed and implemented in a satellite city region of Taipei metropolitan area in Taiwan, to provide a comprehensive living and health care service network for the elderly. The u-Health research team of National Taiwan University and Hospital collaborate with Cardinal Tien Hospital Young-Ho Branch, 17 primary care doctors and two living care service provider partners to provide integrated and continuous services for elderly people in home, community and institutional setting. © 2007 IEEE.

User modelling in on-line distance learning is an important research field focusing on two important aspects: describing and predicting students' actions and intentions as well as adapting the learning process to students' features, habits, preferences, and so on. The aim is to greatly stimulate and improve the learning experience. Indeed, on the one hand, students' intentions may change during the realization of learning activities and thus their actions evolve accordingly as the learning process moves forward. On the other hand, adaptive systems can effectively plan and design appropriate learning tasks according to students' features, habits and interests with the aim of facilitating the achievement of the learning goal. In this context, user modelling implies a continuous processing and analysis of user interaction data during long-term learning activities, which produces large and considerably complex information. As a consequence, processing this information is costly and could require computational capacity beyond that of a single computer. In this paper, we show how a grid approach can considerably decrease the processing time of log data of on-line distance educational Web-based systems. Our prototype is based on the master-worker paradigm and is implemented using a peer-to-peer platform running on the Planetlab nodes. The results of our study show the feasibility of using grid middleware to speed and scale up the processing of log data and thus achieve an efficient and dynamic user modeling in on-line distance learning

Restoring the sensation of inertia in individuals with balance-related impairments is achievable through development of an artificial vestibular prosthesis, based on the cochlear implant paradigm. The vestibular system, however, involves added complexity in surgical methods required for reliable implantation, thus limiting widespread feasibility. This work aims to support research in developing surgical technology for precisely accessing inside the vestibular organ. Issues relating to surgical procedure, microrobotics and medical imaging are discussed, with the goal being the precise and safe implantation of microelectrode arrays. This paper presents the challenges modern surgical technology would encounter in adopting such a procedure and proposes possible solutions, aiming to promote and motivate research in this direction.

In this paper, we present a mechanism for automatic management of the memory hierarchy, including secondary storage, in the context of a global address space parallel programming framework. The programmer specifies the parallelism and locality in the computation. The scheduling of the computation into stages, together with the movement of the associated data between secondary storage and global memory, and between global memory and local memory, is automatically managed. A novel formulation of hypergraph partitioning is used to model the optimization problem of minimizing disk I/O. Experimental evaluation of the proposed approach using a sub-computation from the quantum chemistry domain shows a reduction in the disk I/O cost by up to a factor of 11, and a reduction in turnaround time by up to 49%, as compared to alternative approaches used in state-of-the-art quantum chemistry codes. © 2006 IEEE.

The development of efficient parallel out-of-core applications is often tedious, because of the need to explicitly manage the movement of data between files and data structures of the parallel program. Several large-scale applications require multiple passes of processing over data too large to fit in memory, where significant concurrency exists within each pass. This paper describes a global-address-space framework for the convenient specification and efficient execution of parallel out-of-core applications operating on block-sparse data. The programming model provides a global view of block-sparse matrices and a mechanism for the expression of parallel tasks that operate on block-sparse data. The tasks are automatically partitioned into phases that operate on memory-resident data, and mapped onto processors to optimize load balance and data locality. Experimental results are presented that demonstrate the utility of the approach. © 2006 IEEE.

This paper proposes a novel strategy that uses hypergraph partitioning and K-way iterative mapping-refinement heuristics for scheduling a batch of data-intensive tasks with batch-shared I/O behavior on heterogeneous collections of storage and compute clusters. The strategy formulates file sharing among tasks as a hypergraph to minimize the I/O overheads due to duplicate file transfers and employs a K-way iterative mapping-refinement scheme to adapt to the heterogeneity of compute clusters and storage networks in the system. We evaluate the proposed approach through real experiments and simulations on application scenarios from two application domains;satellite data processing and biomedical imaging. Our experimental results show that our approach can achieve significant performance improvement over algorithms such as HPS, Shortest Job First, MinMin, MaxMin and Sufferage for workloads with high degree of shared I/O among tasks. © 2006 IEEE.
