In biomedical ultrasound, it is often required to eliminate the spectral shaping caused by the transducer from the backscattered signal to obtain the pure tissue response for diagnostic purposes. Here, the authors deconvolve ultrasonic backscattered signals using a least squares deconvolution method in the wavelet domain. The ultrasonic echo is often modeled as the convolution of the transducer impulse response and the response of the medium. The authors solve this deconvolution problem by estimating a filter which approximates the inverse of the transducer impulse response. Therefore, applying this filter to the echo yields the tissue response and applying it to the transducer impulse response results in an impulse function. In this work, the authors assume that the tissue response exhibits 1/f type spectral behavior. Hence, they use the wavelet transform in the deconvolution algorithm for the 1/f signals, which has the useful property that the logarithm of the variance of the wavelet coefficients in each stage progresses linearly. Initially the authors estimate a rough inverse filter using the transducer impulse response. Then, they optimize this filter by minimizing an error criterion defined by using the linear progression property of the logarithmic variance of the wavelet coefficients for the 1/f signals. The authors present the error minimization algorithm and the deconvolution results for tissue mimicking phantom data.

There are two primary reasons why intravascular ultrasound has not yet reached its potential for interventional cardiology. First, image quality has been poor given the possible operating frequencies and numerical apertures. And second, there is no application where routine imaging critically guides an intervention. Over the last 5 years, the biomedical Ultrasonics Lab at the University of Michigan and Endosonics Corporation have worked together to directly address these issues. Recent progress strongly suggests that both limitations can be overcome. First, image quality has been greatly improved with a real-time, synthetic phased array system using a 64 element, high efficiency, ceramic piezoelectric transducer operating at 20 MHz. The array is mounted on the surface of a 1.2 mm diameter catheter appropriate for intracoronary imaging. Second, using this high performance system, three new applications of intraluminal ultrasound have been investigated: real-time color flow imaging, in situ elasticity measurements, and stent deployment monitoring. In this paper, the results of this work are reviewed.

CT images were obtained of the wrist region of 15 cadavers and several living patients. Boundaries of bones were located using a technique based on dynamic programming. The resulting set of surface points on each bone was used to compute principal and antipodal axes and distances between surfaces of the bones, and an interpolation technique was developed to increase the apparent resolution of the 3-D reconstruction. A spatial coordinate system was established based on internal landmarks in the carpal anatomy. The angular orientations of all carpal bones were determined with respect to this system. The principal axes for the same bone among the multiple wrist specimens proved to be more widely dispersed than the antipodal axes for the same bones. The antipodal axes also correspond more closely to an intuitive notion of the "longest axis" of the bones. A method was developed to interpolate surface points between the coarsely-distributed points located by our boundary tracker, and to interpolate data between CT slices, producing a uniformly spaced 3-D data set. The surface of this representation of the bone was used to determine the spacing between the bones in the wrist. The enhanced resolution of the interpolated data improves the resolution of the spacing determination, compared to determinations based only on the points actually located by the boundary tracker.< >

A new method for model reduction of linear discrete systems is proposed. It is based on the weighted impulse response Grammians. These Grammians are extensions of ones proposed for linear continuous systems and contain information on the input-output behavior of the system. The reduced-order models are obtained by retaining the states corresponding to the dominant eigenvalues of these Grammians and are stable if the original system is stable. The method is illustrated by a numerical example and is compared with well-known model reduction techniques. The results obtained using this method are similar to those obtained using the balanced realization technique.< >
