This paper investigates the use of an artificial neural network (ANN) to estimate the six hour rainf.ll over the south-east coast of Tasmania. ANNs are becoming increasingly prominent in many areas of weather forecasting due to their potential to capture the complex relationships between the many factors that contribute to certain weather conditions. The estimations produced by the ANNs were compared to one estimation technique and one forecasting technique used by the Bureau of Meteorology. The results confirm that ANNs have the potential for successful application to the problem of rainf.ll estimation. © 1995 IEEE.

A method for active learning is introduced which uses Gittins multi-armed bandit allocation indices to select actions which optimally trade-off exploration and exploitation to maximize expected payoff. We apply the Gittins method to continuous action spaces by using the C4.5 algorithm to learn a mapping from state (or perception of state) and action to the success or failure of the action when taken in the state. The leaves of the resulting tree form a finite set of alternatives over the continuous space of actions. The action selected is from that leaf which, of the leaves consistent with the perceived state, has the highest Gittins index. We illustrate the technique with a simulated robot learning task for grasping objects where each grasping trial can be lengthy and it is desirable to reduce unnecessary experiments. For the grasping simulation, the Gittins index approach demonstrates statistically significant performance improvement over the Interval Estimation action selection heuristic, with little increase in computational cost. The method also has the advantage of providing a principled way of choosing the exploration parameter based on the expected number of repetitions of the task. © ICML *** rights reserved

The authors treat traffic control methods suitable to ATM LAN, in which two service classes are considered; one is for high speed data transfer based on a fast reservation protocol (FRP service class) and the other is for continuous bit rate (CBR) traffic such as motion video (CBR service class). The authors first evaluate the performance of the FRP service class. When the terminal requests the data transfer, its usable bandwidth is negotiated with the traffic descriptor (C/sub max/, C/sub min/) The former is a desirable data transfer rate, and the latter is a sustainable rate when the network is congested. By carrying out a mathematical analysis, the authors show an appropriate set of the traffic descriptor. The coexistence of FRP and CBR service classes are then treated. By using an analytic method, the performance of the CBR service class traffic is shown to be heavily affected by the FRP service class traffic. Therefore, the authors introduce a reserved bandwidth to the CBR service class to guarantee some appropriate level of performance to the CBR service class.

To successfully apply a multilayered perceptron neural network (NN) to pattern recognition, the feature vectors fed into the NN must contain rich representative inf.rmation so that the NN is able to distinguish the patterns belonging to different classes. For optical character recognition (OCR), the feature vectors, hence, must be endowed with a distortion insensitive property. In the paper, the authors propose a 5-layer perceptron (3 hidden layers) for OCR. One hidden layer is dedicated to extract the so-called Gaussian-vector-field (GVF) feature, which is insensitive to patterns deformed in shapes, of input characters. The other two hidden layers perform hyperregion encoding and decoding functions. A traditional error-propagation learning algorithm is used to train the NN for classifying hand-written numeric characters. Simulation result shows that the MLP can tolerate a large degree of pattern distortion. Furthermore, the size of the MLP is quite small when compared with the other approaches.

In this paper, we present the performance of a dual bus reservation based (DBRB) access protocol, for high speed local and metropolitan area networks. The DBRB network consists of unidirectional dual bus topology of fiber optic cables. At each end there is a master station which generates a frame of slots. When a station wants to transmit, it has to make a reservation in a frame on one bus and waits for the free frame slots to transmit it's packets on the other bus. Within a single frame, each station is allowed to reserve any number of slots up to a maximum number of reservations that is set by the protocol. A simulation program and an approximate analytical model were developed for performance evaluation of the DBRB-net protocol and to study the characteristics of DBRB-net. Through simulation and approximate analytic analysis, it was shown that DBRB-net performance is not limited by operating data rate, the network size or normalized propagation delay if the appropriate network parameters were chosen. A comparison between the performance of DBRB-net and other high speed networks (HSN's) protocols proved that the DBRB has advantages of efficient throughput approaching unity for most practical configurations, low bounded delay, fair access for all nodes at different load, simplicity of the protocol, and implementation flexibility.< >

This paper discusses an isochronous connection management protocol and its slot-reuse scheme for multimedia services on DQDB network. For asynchronous services, slot-reuse improves slot utilization, which has already been discussed in dept.. However only few literature addressed the slot-reuse for synchronous services. Our proposed scheme reuses video slots for either synchronous or asynchronous services according to the need of downstream nodes. Simulation shows that the scheme significantly increases the maximum number of video connections as well as reduces the failure rate of connection request comparing with that without slot-reuse.

For several years we have been working on an architecture for modelling and implementing autonomous agents. This work has been recently extended in two directions: evaluating the benefits of the architecture in a real-world setting in terms of ease of design, rapid prototyping, dynamic resource management, and studying methods for formal analysis of the reactive subsystem based on the composition with models of its physical environment. This paper gives an introduction to the architecture and a flavour of the above-named extentions.

Most algorithms proposed for controlling traffic prior to entering ATM networks are based on static mechanisms. Such static control mechanisms do not account for the dynamics of the user traffic or the network state. Some dynamic control algorithms have been proposed, but most of these algorithms are extremely complex and may make it difficult to provide real time control. In this paper, we present an adaptive rate control algorithm that has been implemented in hardware. The algorithm controls the traffic submitted by a source based on the indirectly observed average rate and burst size for the source. The algorithm is highly efficient and thereby provides real time control at high speed. Our implementation, in concert with flow control in the local area network, provides the basis for ATM-based high performance distributed systems.

The paper explores the use of neural networks in analyzing the effects of advertising and promotion in the retail business. In retailing, one of the key problems is the optimal allocation of advertising expenses and the forecasting of the total sales levels across a wide product range where significant cross-effects among products are likely. Various statistical and econometric methods can be used for such analyses. However, neural networks can offer an alternative and potentially beneficial approach to handling this ill-structured problem. The study evaluates their performance in studying the impact of advertising and promotion on sales. The results reveal that the predictive quality of neural networks depends on the different frequency of data observed i.e. daily or weekly-data models, and the specific learning algorithms used. The study shows that neural networks are capable of capturing the nonlinear aspects of complex relationships in non-stationary data. By performing sensitivity analysis, neural networks can potentially single out important input variables, thereby making it useful for scenario development and practical use.< >
