To overcome the problem that the approximation error of the slip surface feature is bigger when using traditional methods to analyze the stability of loess slope, a new method is put forward. At first, the mathematical model was used to simplify the slip surface of loess slope as logarithmic spiral shape, and then the formula of stability coefficient was deduced to establish the mechanical analysis model of instability slope. At last, the variable-step optimization algorithm was adopted to calculate the minimum stability coefficient. The application instance shows that using logarithmic spiral curve to fit the slip surface feature can conform with the practical failure characteristic of loess slope closely. The variable-step optimization algorithm proposed can improve both convergence rate and accuracy, and its computation results are exactly consistent with the actual facts of loess slope.

Code change metrics mined from source control repositories have proven to be the most reliable predictors of bugs in contemporary software engineering research. Yet a definitive modus operandi for obtaining the required data from a particular software configuration management (SCM) repository needs to be put forward. In this paper, we define a modus operandi to extract some popular change metrics from the Eclipse repository on Github, which can be generalized for any open source Github repository. We define few code change metrics that are intuitively significant for predicting bugs. Bug prediction models built with these metrics along with the existing prominent code change metrics prove to be competent and consistent as per our experiments on five different versions of Eclipse JDT project. We explored Naïve Bayes Tree algorithm to build a prediction model and have found it to perform better than other commonly used algorithms in this problem domain.

The development of high-order, finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) schemes for modeling and investigating radio-wave propagation problems are presented in this work. The electromagnetic waves can be reproduced precisely in a well-defined discretized space of any geometry, giving accurate simulation results with reasonable computational resources. Special consideration is given to the correct boundary conditions enforced at the media interfaces, as well as to the absorbing boundary conditions that terminate the FDTD grid in open-region problems.

Modern embedded applications often require high computational power and, on the other hand, fulfilment of real-time constraints and high level of resilience. Simulink is one widely used tool for model-based development of embedded software. In this paper, we focus on the derivation of parallel programs from Simulink models and real-time resilient execution of derived implementations on a many-core platform. The main contribution is a fault-tolerance (FT) mechanism that prevents data loss when the platform is dynamically reconfigured to mask failures of individual cores. Finally, we evaluate the proposed solutions on an industrial case study using a commercially available NoC-based platform. The evaluation shows that the proposed FT mechanism has a marginal overhead.

Courses to train modeling competence are held in higher educational institutions. These courses focus on the final artifacts submitted by learners for analysis and/or evaluation and do not clarify the intermediate creation process. This study focuses on quality of the final class diagram submitted by learners and trials and errors during the creation process. We tried to verify a hypothesis that learners to create an artifact with good quality make a number of trials and errors during the editing process. We collected the fine-grained data regarding the editing history of class diagrams created by learners by our tool called KIfU. We verified the hypothesis by analyzing the collected data. First, we defined two metrics ("Number of editing" and "Number of movement" of symbols in the artifact) calculated from the data that show the learners' trials and errors. Second, we divided learners into two groups, group that created artifacts with good quality and that with not good quality. Finally, we compared the metrics between the groups. The results show that there are statistically significantly differences of values of both metrics between the groups. We conclude the hypothesis we set is correct from the result.

This paper studies approximate solutions for the statistical properties of the outage intervals of the instantaneous capacity in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems with orthogonal space-time block code (OSTBC) over Rayleigh fading channels. We take advantage from the fact that the probability density function (PDF) of the channel power gain can be approximated by a left-truncated Gaussian distribution if the number of transmit and receive antennas is large. Assuming a symmetrical Doppler power spectral density (PSD), a closed-form expression is presented for the Rice probability function of the outage durations. This function, in general, approximates the PDF of the outage intervals only over its initial part. By applying the asymptotic behavior of level crossings of Gaussian processes, an alternative expression, valid only for low capacity thresholds, is obtained, which, in turn, is applied to determine an approximate solution for the kth-order moments of the outage intervals. Also presented is the PDF of the so-called instantaneous capacity loss with respect to the average capacity. Simulation results have been shown to be in good agreement with the theoretical approximations, thereby confirming their validity. Although, the focus of the study is on massive MIMO systems, it has been observed that the approximations are accurate even for a moderate number of antennas such as the case of 4×4 MIMO-OSTBC systems.

With rapid development of the world globalization, the role of English has become an international language for people conversation. In fact, people know it but they often have no good ways to learn English efficiently. Sometimes, some people think that the procedure of learning English is boring. Therefore, it is an important issue how to engage and encourage people to effectively learn English. Many researches and experiments had indicated that the game-based learning is a joyful approach for learning. Chinese Mahjong is a traditional Chinese game for gambling and entertainment. The game rule of Mahjong is to collect the related cards combining a card sequence or the same cards in a triple pair. In the same, spelling the English vocabulary is also combined the letters to form a word. Thus, this paper tries to design and implement a Mahjong-like multi-party game spelling the English vocabulary for learners in English learning. That is, the learners play the game with other peer learners via the Internet to promote their spelling abilities of English vocabulary in multi-party networked game. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

There are several applications, such as play lists of songs or movies, and shopping carts, where users are interested in finding top-k packages, consisting of sets of items. In response to this need, there has been a recent urry of activity around extending classical recommender systems (RS), which are effective at recommending individual items, to recommend packages, or sets of items. The few recent proposals for package RS suffer from one of the following drawbacks: they either rely on hard constraints which may be difficult to be specified exactly by the user or on returning Paretooptimal packages which are too numerous for the user to sift through. To overcome these limitations, we propose an alternative approach for finding personalized top-k packages for users, by capturing users' preferences over packages using a linear utility function which the system learns. Instead of asking a user to specify this function explicitly, which is unrealistic, we explicitly model the uncertainty in the utility function and propose a preference elicitation-based framework for learning the utility function through feedback provided by the user. We propose several samplingbased methods which, given user feedback, can capture the updated utility function. We develop an efficient algorithm for generating top-k packages using the learned utility function, where the rank ordering respects any of a variety of ranking semantics proposed in the literature. Through extensive experiments on both real and synthetic datasets, we demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed system for finding top-k packages. © 2014 VLDB Endowment 21508097/14/10.

WBPL: An open-source library for predicting web surfing behaviors

We present WBPL (Web users Behavior Prediction Library), a cross-platform open-source library for predicting the behavior of web users. WBPL allows training prediction models from server logs. The proposed library offers support for three of the most used webservers (Apache, Nginx and Lighttpd). Models can then be used to predict the next resources fetched by users and can be updated with new logs efficiently. WBPL offers multiple state-of-the-art prediction models such as PPM, All-K-Order-Markov and DG and a novel prediction model CPT (Compact Prediction Tree). Experiments on various web click-stream datasets shows that the library can be used to predict web surfing or buying behaviors with a very high overall accuracy (up to 38 %) and is very efficient (up to 1000 predictions /s). © 2014 Springer International Publishing.

Cardiotocography (CTG) is a worldwide method used for recording fetal heart rate and uterine contractions during pregnancy and delivery. The consistent visual assessment of the CTG is not only time consuming but also requires expertise and clinical knowledge of the obstetricians. The inconsistency in visual evaluation can be eliminated by developing clinical decision support systems. During last few decades various data mining and machine learning techniques have been proposed for developing such systems. In present study, bagging approach in combination with three traditional decision trees algorithms (random forest, Reduced Error Pruning Tree (REPTree) and J48) has been applied to identify normal and pathological fetal state using CTG data. Studies show that decision trees algorithms and bagging have separately shown tremendous improvements in the classification of healthy and pathological subjects in medical domain. The parameters of classifiers were optimized before applying on the data sets. The ten folds cross validation is used for examining the robust of the classifiers. The degree of separation was quantified using Precision, Recall and F-Measure. At first full feature space have been analyzed using proposed bagging based decision trees algorithms. Then by using correlation feature selection - subset evaluation (cfs) method, a reduced feature space has been obtained and analyzed using proposed method. The overall classification accuracy of more than 90% has been obtained by the classifiers on the test set when full feature space is used. For all three performance measures, values greater than 0.90 has been achieved with full and reduced feature space. The proposed methodology showed better classification in both full and reduced feature space scenarios.
