The inform.tion society requires new skills and knowledge about how to cope in a computerized world. Although it is fully assumed in the political and social discourse, it is a neglected subject in formal education. Each nation should analyze how computing is learned in its K-12 education system. This research-to-practice paper presents the report carried out in Spain promoted by two academic associations, which analyzes the state of computing education in Spain in K-12 studies, summarizes some elements of the didactics of computing and analyzes the training received by teachers who will train K-12 students. The report also presents some reflections of the working group in charge, and nine proposals for improvement oriented to policy makers are pointed out. © 2023 IEEE.

Terahertz (THz) communication is expected to be a key technology for future sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks. Furthermore, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) have been proposed to modify the wireless propagation environment and enhance system performance. Given the sensitivity to blockages and limited coverage range, RIS is particularly promising for THz communications. Active RIS can overcome the multiplicative fading effect in RIS-aided communications. In this paper, we explore active RIS-assisted THz communications. We formulate the ergodic rate, considering factors associated with active RIS, including active noise and signal amplification, and THz signals, including molecular absorption and beam misalignment. © 2024, CC BY.

Data prefetching is a technique that plays a crucial role in modern high-performance processors by hiding long latency memory accesses. Several state-of-the-art hardware prefetchers exploit the concept of deltas, defined as the difference between the cache line addresses of two demand accesses. Existing delta prefetchers, such as best offset prefetching (BOP) and multi-lookahead prefetching (MLOP), train and predict future accesses based on global deltas. We observed that the use of global deltas results in missed opportunities to anticipate memory *** this paper, we propose Berti, a first-level data cache prefetcher that selects the best local deltas, i.e., those that consider only demand accesses issued by the same instruction. Thanks to a high-confidence mechanism that precisely detects the timely local deltas with high coverage, Berti generates accurate prefetch requests. Then, it orchestrates the prefetch requests to the memory hierarchy, using the selected *** empirical results using ChampSim and SPEC CPU2017 and GAP workloads show that, with a storage overhead of just 2.55 KB, Berti improves performance by 8.5% compared to a baseline IP-stride and 3.5% compared to IPCP, a state-of-the-art prefetcher. Our evaluation also shows that Berti reduces dynamic energy at the memory hierarchy by 33.6% compared to IPCP, thanks to its high prefetch accuracy.

A clear understanding of where humans move in a scenario, their usual paths and speeds, and where they stop, is very important for different applications, such as mobility studies in urban areas or robot navigation tasks within human-populated environments. We propose in this article, a neural architecture based on Vision Transformers (ViTs) to provide this inform.tion. This solution can arguably capture spatial correlations more effectively than Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). In the paper, we describe the methodology and proposed neural architecture and show the experiments' results with a standard dataset. We show that the proposed ViT architecture improves the metrics compared to a method based on a CNN.

Social media has become a significant source of data, important for different research, including those interested in using venue categories to understand different city dynamics and urban social behavior. Those research often uses data from a single platform, however, integrating data from multiple platforms affords many benefits;for instance, we can have a richer vision of the venues in the city. Nevertheless, the integration of data from multiple social media platforms poses several issues. One issue is the identification and integration of activities, which is implicitly represented by categories of places. This is because of the lack of standard venue categories across social media. Thus, this paper focuses on the venue integration problem through categories of venues. We propose an ontology to support the integration of venues across different data sources in this context. In addition, we propose a novel approach for this problem. Experimental results show that our approach is a promising alternative for this issue. © 2021 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

In this paper, we present a novel approach to Blind Color De-convolution, a stain separation technique useful for normalizing, augmenting, and automatically diagnosing histological images. To robustly estimate the stain colors and concentrations, we follow the Bayesian framework and introduce a Gaussian prior distribution on the color vectors and a Hyperbolic Secant prior on the concentrations, which is a seldom explored image *** provide a comprehensive mathematical derivation of our inference procedure, outlining the underlying principles and assumptions. To demonstrate its effectiveness, we conduct two experiments. The first experiment assesses the fidelity of the reconstructed images to the underlying tissue characteristics. The second experiment uses it as a preprocessing step for a multicenter breast cancer classification task. Our results reveal the superior performance of the proposed method, underscoring its potential for advancing histological image processing and AI-assisted diagnosis.

In this paper, we propose a data-driven leak localization method for water distribution networks (WDNs) which combines two complementary approaches: graph-based interpolation and dictionary classification. The former estimates the complete WDN hydraulic state (i.e., hydraulic heads) from real measurements at certain nodes and the network graph. Then, these actual measurements, together with a subset of valuable estimated states, are used to feed and train the dictionary learning scheme. Thus, the meshing of these two methods is explored, showing that its performance is superior to either approach alone, even deriving different mechanisms to increase its resilience to classical problems (e.g., dimensionality, interpolation errors, etc.). Resonances, also known as quasi normal modes (QNM) in the non-Hermitian case, play an ubiquitous role in all domains of physics ruled by wave phenomena, notably in continuum mechanics, acoustics, electrodynamics, and quantum theory. Groundbreaking advances in theoretical and applied Artificial Intelligence (AI). DL algorithms are groundedin non-linear and complex artificial neural systems that progressively extract higher-level features from *** is frequently compared with human-level performance in real-world tasks, such as clinical diagnostics. Itis also a turning point in solving otherwise intractable problems in the design of virtual agents or robotics;orin providing novel insight into disease progress in genomics and Neuroimaging (NI), understanding humanbrain function, the automation of industrial processes based on computer vision, and so on. In this paper, themost relevant advances from the last few years in AI and several applications to neuroscience, neuroimaging,computer vision, and robotics are presented, reviewed and discussed. In this way, we summarize the state-ofthe-art in AI methods, models and applications within a collection of works presented at the 9th InternationalConference on the Interplay between Natural and Artificial Computation (IWINAC).
