Virtual Control Labs Experimentation: The Water Tank System

This paper describes a new way to perform automated experiments using virtual laboratories. Experiments are developed and executed using a new software tool: the Experiment Editor. This tool uses virtual laboratories applications designed with educational purposes. The main features/advantages of the Experiment Editor are: 1) the possibility of modifying the initial functionality of the laboratories (i.e. adding new controllers to the plant), 2) analyzing the obtained results during the experiment and performing complex or repetitive tasks in a simple way, 3) and any others explained in the paper. To illustrate the utility of the Experiment Editor a very well-known system is used: the water tank system. © 2016

Sounds of science is the first movement of a symphony for many (scientific) instruments and voices, united in celebration of the frontiers of science. John Goodenough, the maestro who transformed energy usage and technology through the invention of the lithium-ion battery, opens the programme, reflecting on the ultimate limits of battery technology. This applied theme continues through the subsequent pieces on energy related topics – the sodium-ion battery and artificial fuels, by Martin Månsson – and the ultimate challenge for 3D printing, the eventual production of life, by Anthony Atala. A passage by Gerianne Alexander follows, reflecting on a related issue: How might an artificially produced human being behave? Next comes a consideration of consiousness and free will by Roland Allen and Suzy Lidström. Further voices and new instruments enter as Warwick Bowen, Nicolas Mauranyapin and Lars Madsen discuss whether dynamical processes of single molecules might be observed in their native state. The exploitation of chaos in science and technology, applications of Bose-Einstein condensates and a consideration of the significance of entropy follow in pieces by Linda Reichl, Ernst Rasel and Roland Allen, respectively. Mikhail Katsnelson and Eugene Koonin then discuss the potential generalisation of thermodynamic concepts in the context of biological evolution. Entering with the music of the cosmos, Philip Yasskin discusses whether we might be able to observe torsion in the geometry of the universe. The crescendo comes with the crisis of singularities, their nature and whether they can be resolved through quantum effects, in the composition of Alan Coley. The climax is Mario Krenn, Art Melvin and Anton Zeilinger’s consideration of how computer code can be autonomously surprising and creative. In a harmonious counterpoint – his ‘Guidelines for considering AIs as coauthors’ – Roman Yampolskiy concludes that such code is not yet able to take responsibility for coauthoring a

Mobility of people and goods in urban environments raises several quality and sustainability concerns. While ICTs have established the ground for developing intelligent transport services, their effective use for supporting cleaner urban mobility still represents a major research challenge. The eCOMPASS research project addressed this challenge through introducing new mobility concepts and establishing a methodological framework for route planning optimization, delivering a comprehensive set of innovative tools and services for end-users to enable eco-awareness in urban transport. eCOMPASS innovative tools are based on new algorithmic technology concerning tools and methods for vehicle routing (cars and vehicle fleets) and multimodal human mobility for city dwellers and tourists. eCOMPASS involved a generic architecture that considered all types and scenarios of human and goods mobility in urban environments minimizing their environmental impact. In this work, we report on the main scientific innovations and end-products of eCOMPASS for vehicle routing, including car route planning and vehicle fleets.

We introduce a novel distributed control architecture for disturbances attenuation in heterogeneous platoons of linear and time-invariant autonomous agents that inherits the performance achievable by the leader-follower control policies. We provide a Youla-like parameterization for the class of all distributed controllers such that the sparsity constraints are imposed on the controllers' left coprime factors, outlining a new concept of structural constraints in distributed control. The proposed scheme lends itself to optimal controller design via norm based costs, it guarantees string stability and completely eliminates the accordion effect from the behavior of the platoon. The distributed controller is proven to attain global optimality for heterogeneous platoons and H2 costs and can easily reconfigure such as to remain optimal during formation merging/exiting maneuvers. The scheme is amenable to a GPS time base synchronization mechanism, allowing for the exact compensation of the time delays induced by the wireless communications. © 2016 American Automatic Control Council (AACC).

In this paper, we propose a dual-CFA pattern for imaging system. Different from the conventional single CFA, the proposed dual-CFA imaging system has two advantages: first, compared with the single CFA pattern, the populated image based on the dual-CFA pattern has almost no artifacts on the edge and texture details; second, it greatly reduces the false color artifacts because more color information can be used when interpolating the missing color components; As compared with the latest demosaicking algorithms, experiments show that the proposed algorithm provides superior performance in terms of both objective and subjective image qualities.

A compact microstrip line fed tapered-shaped slotted ultra-wideband(UWB) antenna is presented. The new design is composed of a rectangular slotted patch with a compact size of 21.44 × 23.53 mm 2 and fed by microstrip transmission line of 50 Ω. The proposed antenna is simulated onto a less expensive FR4 substrate which has a height of 1.6 mm. There achieved a wider bandwidth of 8.51 GHz (3.49-12 GHz) with good impedance matching, constant gain, 5.76 dBi of maximum gain and stable radiation pattern results in the proposed antenna more appropriate for using UWB communication applications compared to existing antennas. The proposed antenna is designed and simulated in HFSS and CST Microwave Studio software to see the antenna performance.

It is recognized that the semantic space of knowledge is a hierarchical concept network. This paper presents theories and algorithms of hierarchical concept classification by quantitative semantic relations via machine learning based on concept algebra. The equivalence between formal concepts are analyzed by an Algorithm of Concept Equivalence Analysis (ACEA), which quantitatively determines the semantic similarity of an arbitrary pair of formal concepts. This leads to the development of the Algorithm of Relational Semantic Classification (ARSC) for hierarchically classify any given concept in the semantic space of knowledge. Experiments applying Algorithms ACEA and ARSC on 20 formal concepts are successfully conducted, which encouragingly demonstrate the deep machine understanding of semantic relations and their quantitative weights beyond human perspectives on knowledge learning and natural language processing.

A Holter Monitor is a device which is worn by patients and is used to collect Electrocardiography (ECG) data for around 24 hours. This device is then connected to a computer by a physician to download the data. An analysis of this data can reveal abnormalities which may not appear in a clinical measurement of shorter duration. Cost of a Holter monitor is a crucial parameter, as this is used by patients for longer duration, unlike other clinical instruments. Availability of devices restricts the number of patients which can be monitored and treated by hospitals. In addition patients require customization of measurements which most of the available device do not offer. The high cost of this device is deterring physicians from long term monitoring use like athletic performance of sportsmen, elderly patients for independent living, patients taking medications causing side-effects etc. In this paper we present a low cost Holter Monitor which can be assembled using off the shelf components. It can be customized for individual needs and is extendable. The software architecture and communication framework developed can be used for any data intensive measurement and transmission. © 2016 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a method for effectively improving the quality of any upscaled image. Our underlying idea is to calculate a differential image in the process of rescaling the given image. Once the image is upscaled, the differential image is used to adjust the quality of the resulting upscaled image. Results show that our proposed method was able to effectively improve the quality of the six upscaled images used in our experiments. For all test images, each of which was upscaled to double and quadruple their original sizes, our proposed method was able to raise the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) by approximately 1.78 dB and 1.64 dB, respectively, on average.
