This paper proposes a new idea for image compression that neither the additional information nor the complex formulas for image decompression are needed. Our method includes removing image pixel values from the equalized selected rows and columns for image compression and uses known adjacent pixel values to calculate unknown pixel values for image decompression. We experimentally found that the image quality after compression and decompression by our method is better than that applying joint photographic experts group (JPEG) method for image compression and decompression. Furthermore, the quality of the decompressed images can be higher than that of JPEG images even when the compression rate is higher. Considering the LENA image, when the compression rate is 25%, the image quality in our method is 33.45 dB and that of JPEG images is 32.83 dB;when the compression ratio is 6.25%, the image quality in our method is 27.93 dB and that of JPEG images is 27.49 dB.

Automated car following, or platooning, is a promising Inter-Vehicle Communication (IVC) application which has the potential of reducing traffic jams, improving safety, and decreasing fuel consumption by forming groups of vehicles which autonomously follow a common leader. The application works by sharing vehicles' data through high frequency periodic beaconing which, due to channel congestion, might not work in highly dense scenarios. To address this issue, in this paper we propose a dynamic approach called Jerk Beaconing which exploits vehicle dynamics to share data only when needed. The results, compared to a commonly assumed 10 Hz beaconing, show huge benefits in term of network resource saving. Moreover, our approach outperforms static beaconing in terms of safety as well, as it is able to keep inter-vehicle distance closer to the desired gap even in highly demanding scenarios.

Drive-by downloads continue to be the basis for many kinds of large-scale web attacks. The detection of Drive-by downloads and heap spraying attacks has been receiving serious research attention. The appearance of complex obfuscation patterns make the two primary challenges preventing the development of large-scale, real-time detectors of drive-by downloads become contradictory. On one hand, fabrication of disguised transformations (massively and heavily obfuscated scripts) thwarts capabilities of static analysis. On the other hand, dynamic analysis incurs excessive overhead along with other limitations. To ameliorate this situation, we propose Drive-by Disclosure, a novel complementary solution to bridge the gap between dynamic and static approaches. Drive-by Disclosure leverages availability of AST representation to predict script's latent behaviors statically. This approach facilitates distinction between scripting practices of drive-by downloads and disguised transformations. Subsequently, in order to reliably detect drive-by downloads, dynamic analysis will only be applied to the scripts that are identified as disguised. Compared to the state-of-the-art solutions, Drive-by Disclosure minimizes analysis overhead of JSAND to less than 24%. Also, it improves JSAND's detection rate by more than 29 absolute percentage points. Further, the combination of JSAND and Drive-by Disclosure attains two times better accuracy than Cujo.

To establish a secure connection between a mobile user and a remote server, this paper presents a session key agreement scheme through remote mutual authentication protocol by using mobile application software(MAS). We analyzed the security of our protocol informally, which confirms that the protocol is secure against all the relevant security attacks including off-line identity-password guessing attacks, user-server impersonation attacks, and insider attack. In addition, the widely accepted simulator tool AVISPA simulates the proposed protocol and confirms that the protocol is SAFE under the OFMC and CL-AtSe back-ends. Our protocol not only provide strong security against the relevant attacks, but it also achieves proper mutual authentication, user anonymity, known key secrecy and efficient password change operation. The performance comparison is also performed, which ensures that the protocol is efficient in terms of computation and communication costs.

PennyLane is a Python 3 software framework for differentiable programming of quantum computers. The library provides a unified architecture for near-term quantum computing devices, supporting both qubit and continuous-variable paradigms. PennyLane’s core feature is the ability to compute gradients of variational quantum circuits in a way that is compatible with classical techniques such as backpropagation. PennyLane thus extends the automatic differentiation algorithms common in optimization and machine learning to include quantum and hybrid computations. A plugin system makes the framework compatible with any gate-based quantum simulator or hardware. We provide plugins for hardware providers including the Xanadu Cloud, Amazon Braket, and IBM Quantum, allowing PennyLane optimizations to be run on publicly accessible quantum devices. On the classical front, PennyLane interfaces with accelerated machine learning libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, JAX, and Autograd. PennyLane can be used for the optimization of variational quantum eigensolvers, quantum approximate optimization, quantum machine learning models, and many other applications. We have investigated whether Agile practices can be applied as a pedagogical approach to derive benefit in the areas of encouraging students to take responsibility for their learning (self managed learning), continuous improvement through reflection, alternative approaches for grading, increased engagement by learners, and more effective data collection and assessment of outcomes. Agile is an umbrella term for values, principles and practices applied to the process of software development. The Agile movement has aimed to develop a new and better culture within the software development community and has seen an increased rate of adoption within corporate settings. The goal of this workshop is to help participants explore how Agile development, a management technique borne out of the software industry, can not only change the way that students engage in project-based and team-based course projects, but also transform the way that we educate our students.

In this work, we propose a scheme, named LECRAD, for the re-construction of temporarily lost connectivity in the presence of dumb nodes in stationary wireless sensor networks. A sensor node is termed as "dumb", when it continues its physical sensing, but fails to communicate due to shrinkage in communication range, typically attributed to adverse environmental effects such as rainfall, fog and high temperature. On the resumption of favorable environmental conditions, the node starts to behave normally. So, dumb behavior is dynamic in nature. Such behavior of a node leads to network partitioning and node isolation, which results in disruption of connected topology. Therefore, the proposed scheme in this paper reconstructs the lost connectivities between nodes by activating intermediate sleep nodes or by adjusting the communication range of the sensor nodes, while there is no neighbor node within the reduced communication range. In the proposed scheme, a learning automata-based approach is used for activation of intermediate sleep nodes or adjustment of communication range of isolated or intermediate nodes to decrease the message overhead and energy consumption of the network. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme, LECRAD, exhibits better energy efficiency and message overhead than that of the recently proposed topology management protocols, LETC and Al, if they are applied in such scenario.

A Bell test is a randomized trial that compares experimental observations against the philosophical worldview of local realism1, in which the properties of the physical world are independent of our observation of them and no signal travels faster than light. A Bell test requires spatially distributed entanglement, fast and high-efficiency detection and unpredictable measurement settings2,3. Although technology can satisfy the first two of these requirements4–7, the use of physical devices to choose settings in a Bell test involves making assumptions about the physics that one aims to test. Bell himself noted this weakness in using physical setting choices and argued that human ‘free will’ could be used rigorously to ensure unpredictability in Bell tests8. Here we report a set of local-realism tests using human choices, which avoids assumptions about predictability in physics. We recruited about 100,000 human participants to play an online video game that incentivizes fast, sustained input of unpredictable selections and illustrates Bell-test methodology9. The participants generated 97,347,490 binary choices, which were directed via a scalable web platform to 12 laboratories on five continents, where 13 experiments tested local realism using photons5,6, single atoms7, atomic ensembles10, and superconducting devices11. Over a 12-hour period on 30 November 2016, participants worldwide provided a sustained data flow of over 1,000 bits per second to the experiments, which used different human-generated data to choose each measurement setting. The observed correlations strongly contradict local realism and other realistic positions in bipartite and tripartite12 scenarios. Project outcomes include closing the ‘freedom-of-choice loophole’ (the possibility that the setting choices are influenced by ‘hidden variables’ to correlate with the particle properties13), the utilization of video-game methods14 for rapid collection of human generated randomness, and the use of network

Dynamic spectrum access is regarded as a backbone for cognitive radio networks where unlicensed secondary users (SUs) access spectrum opportunistically which is licensed to licensed primary users (PUs). SUs are required to identify the idle bands and use them dynamically without creating any harmful interference to PUs. In dynamic spectrum access for peer-to-peer based communications, SU transmitter and its intended SU receiver must use common channel to communicate. Note that the fixed common control channel could not be viable in case of jamming attacks and wideband regime. Thus in this paper, we present a test bed using Universal software Radio Peripheral (NI USRP) devices. We use Lab View® and MATLAB® scripting extensions to program NI USRP devices for peer-to-peer communications. Once SU transmitter and receiver pair knows idle channels, they use one of the best idle channels to communicate. We study sequential channel scanning and quorum based rendezvous methods without using any common control channels. These two schemes are compared in terms of their performance for finding suitable channel. Test bed is developed to test these schemes. Numerical results are presented obtained from test bed.

In many developing countries, agriculture is one of the primary livelihoods of common people. Agriculture requires various types of technologies for improving crop yields. The attack of animals in the agricultural land and the theft of crops by humans cause heavy loss in cultivation. In this work, we propose a hardware prototype using Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) for intruder detection in an agricultural field. The proposed system is named Agricultural Intrusion Detection (AID). AID helps to generate alarms in the farmer's house and at the same time transmits a text message to the farmer's cell phone when an intruder enters into the field. In order to implement the proposed scheme, we design and deploy Advanced Virtual RISC (AVR) micro-controller-based wireless sensor boards over an outdoor environment and evaluate the performance.
