In this paper, a method for hand posture recognition, which is robust for hand posture changing in an actual environment, is proposed. Conventionally, a data glove device and a 3D scanner have been used for the feature extraction of hand shape. However, the performance of each approach is affeected by hand posture changing. Therefore, this paper proposes the posture fluctuation model for efficient hand posture recognition, based on 3D hand shape and color feature obtained from a stereo camera. A large set of dictionary for posture recognition is built by various leaned hand images which were auto-created from one scanned hand image, based on plural proposed models. In order to show the effectiveness of proposed method, performance and processing times for posture recognition are compared to conventional method. In addition, we perform the evaluation experiment by using the Japanese sign language. © 2010 IEEE.

Mobile learning is considered the next step of online learning by incorporating mobility as a key requirement. Indeed, the current wide spread of mobile devices and wireless technologies brings an enormous potential to e-learning, in terms of ubiquity, pervasiveness, personalization, flexibility, and so on. For this reason, Mobile Learning is attracting significant research efforts covering a fairly variety of learning settings, from schools and universities to workplaces and cities. This research has evidenced that mobile technology can offer new opportunities for learners to learn inside and beyond the traditional instructor-oriented educational paradigm. However, mobile technologies are still in its infancy and many challenges arise. In this paper we analyze, from both learning and technological perspectives, the development of learning applications using mobile devices. To this end, proxy and proxy less architectures are considered as way to extend traditional virtual campuses with mobile clients. The objective is twofold: to access learning materials and to support learning activities. A prototype of a Virtual Campus is developed using MLE-Moodle -the Mobile Learning module of Moodle. The proposed Virtual Campus enables mobile clients to perform online learning activities and is a step towards achieving the “anytime, anywhere” paradigm.

The project of E-Simulator is under way at Hyogo Earthquake engineering Research Center (E-Defense) of National Research Institute of Earth science and Disaster Prevention (NIED), Japan, which facilitates the world's largest shaking table. The E-Simulator uses the parallel finite element (FE) analysis software package called ADVENTYRECluster (ADVC) as a platform. In this study, we report the results of high-precision FE-analysis for simulation of collapse behavior of the 4-story steel building frame that is the specimen of the full-scale total collapse shaking-table test conducted in September 2007 at E-Defense. It is shown that elastoplastic dynamic responses can be estimated with good accuracy using a high-precision FE-analysis without resort to macro models such as plastic hinge and composite beam effect.

Data mining algorithms have been proved to be useful for the processing of large data sets in order to extract relevant information and knowledge. Such algorithms are also important for analyzing data collected from the users' activity users. One family of such data analysis is that of mining of log files of online applications that register the actions of online users during long periods of time. A relevant objective in this case is to study the behavior of online users and feedback the design processes of online applications to provide better usability and adaption to users' preferences. The context of this work is that of a virtual campus in which thousands of students and tutors carry out the learning and teaching activity using online applications. The information stored in log files of virtual campuses tend to be large, complex and heterogeneous in nature. Hence, their mining requires both efficient and intelligent processing and analysis of user interaction data during long-term learning activities. In this paper, we present a bi-clustering algorithm for processing large log data sets from the online daily activity of students in a real virtual campus. Our approach is useful to extract relevant knowledge about user activity such as navigation patterns, activities performed as well as to study time parameters related to such activities. The extracted information can be useful not only to students and tutors to stimulate and improve their experience when interacting with the system but also to the designers and developers of the virtual campus in order to better support the online teaching and learning.

In this study, we design and present the novel wearable system with the interactive posture caption and recognition functions based on the non-vision over the ZigBee wireless sensor network (ZigBee-WSN). There are two type sensors, 3-axis accelerometer and clip type, to be employed in our wearable system. These sensors are arranged on user's four limbs such that the posture information can be gathered by them. Then, the posture information is transmitted to the data-controlling center over ZigBee-WSN. Finally, this center can analyze and distinguish various postures by our proposed algorithm through the friend user's interface to express. Our presented wearable system can distinguish out 28 kinds of hand postures and 13 kinds of leg postures altogether. Moreover, under our presented ZigBee-WSN system with small size, low-power consumption, and high-reliability characteristics, the data-controlling center can simultaneously tele-monitor the real-time body interactive postures of 8 persons, when the transmitting distance is less than 18 M and the package correct transmitted rate is more than 97.5%.

Background: Text mining challenges have been organised to measure the performance of automatic text mining solutions against a manually annotated gold standard corpus (GSC). The preparation of the GSC is timeconsuming and costly and the final corpus consists at the most of a few thousand documents annotated with a limited set of semantic groups. To overcome these shortcomings, the CALBC project partners (PPs) have produced a large-scale annotated biomedical corpus with four different semantic groups through the harmonisation of annotations from automatic text mining solutions, the first version of the Silver Standard Corpus (SSC-I). The four semantic groups were chemical entities and drugs (CHED), genes and proteins (PRGE), diseases and disorders (DISO) and species (SPE). This corpus has been used for the First CALBC Challenge asking the participants to annotate the corpus with their annotation solutions.

Uncertain and incomplete requirements throughout the whole software life cycle contribute to volatility of the requirements. In a situation where the volatile requirement is changed to satisfy stakeholder needs, all the affected requirements and other impacted software artefacts (such as designs, codes, and tests) must be identified and changed accordingly. This paper introduces an approach to facilitate both engineers and users in propagating changes from requirements to the software high-level designs during software development and evolution. The two main pillars of this approach, namely product metamodel and process model are described in details. Firstly, the metamodel highlights on explicit conceptual model for volatile requirement and its characteristics. Next, the focus will be placed on the systematic process model specified using the SPEM that offers guidelines to perform the requirement change process. The applicability of the product metamodel and its elements are evaluated using the IFAMMS case study application.

Alongside multitude of innovations and consequential changes in lifestyle, the ability to access home appliances or security cameras over the Internet has been in demand for some years now. In this paper, we propose an efficient, low-cost and user-friendly method to access networked home appliances over the Internet, providing strong, well integrated, three levels of security to the whole application and user data. We present a scheme in which, iris image is used for user authentication and after performing its hashing (using BioHashing), it is sent to the server through a secure communication channel utilizing Secure Socket Layer (SSL). The deterministic feature sequence from the iris image is extracted using 1D log-Gabor filters. Mersenne twister random number generator algorithm is used to produce an array of pseudo-random numbers which is later orthonormalised employing Gram-Schmidt orthonormalization algorithm for performing BioHashing. In addition to this protected interaction mechanism, we use a single Authentication Server in order to enable access to the home appliances of a complete housing society via Internet, which reduces user responsibility and improves accessibility of this endeavor without compromising on system security. We demonstrate the perfect recognition efficiency of this system with equal error rate (EER) of 0% on CASIA 1 iris image dataset.
