This paper presents a new logic style, named Current-Mode Differential logic (CMDL), that achieves both high operating speed and low power consumption. Inspired by the low-voltage swing (LVS) logic, CMDL uses a shunt resistor at the differential output to obtain constant low swing signal without the need to reset low. Furthermore, conditional shunt transistors are used for the internal nodes to prevent high-voltage swing, thus entirely eliminate the power-hungry clocked reset network in LVS circuits. We show that the CMDL is suitable for high-end microprocessor integer core by providing three datapath modules implemented in CMDL. Our simulation results indicate that, operating at comparable speed with LVS logic, CMDL circuits can achieve up to 50% reduction of delay-power product compared to CMOS logic and LVS logic. In addition, CMDL reduces the power consumption of LVS by up to 40%. ©2008 IEEE.

Meta-modeling in multiobjective optimization

In many practical engineering design and other scientific optimization problems, the objective function is not given in closed form in terms of the design variables. Given the value of the design variables, the value of the objective function is obtained by some numerical analysis, such as structural analysis, fluidmechanic analysis, thermodynamic analysis, and so on. It may even be obtained by conducting a real (physical) experiment and taking direct measurements. Usually, these evaluations are considerably more time-consuming than evaluations of closed-form functions. In order to make the number of evaluations as few as possible, we may combine iterative search with meta-modeling. The objective function is modeled during optimization by fitting a function through the evaluated points. This model is then used to help predict the value of future search points, so that high performance regions of design space can be identified more rapidly. In this chapter, a survey of meta-modeling approaches and their suitability to specific problem contexts is given. The aspects of dimensionality, noise, expensiveness of evaluations and others, are related to choice of methods. For the multiobjective version of the meta-modeling problem, further aspects must be considered, such as how to define improvement in a Pareto approximation set, and how to model each objective function. The possibility of interactive methods combining meta-modeling with decision-making is also covered. Two example applications are included. One is a multiobjective biochemistry problem, involving instrument optimization;the other relates to seismic design in the reinforcement of cable-stayed bridges. © 2008 Springer Berlin Heidelberg.

The objective of this paper is to present a graphical-user-interface (GUI) in support of a decision support system (KASER) for machine understanding. In order to provide information between the user and the KASER during the learning process, the approach is to combine information science and cognitive science in the form of several virtual and physical multimedia screens (e.g., a whiteboard running a pen-based OS ensemble, a menu-driven touch-screen, or a multimedia output screen). The touch-screen will also facilitate navigation between virtual screens. An application to homeland security is provided as an example;however the approach has vast applicability to many problems in which a graphical form of learning is required. The integration between human and machine is to be seamless which allows the user to pose questions and retrieve answers through the multimedia system, thus accelerating the learning process.

In this paper, we propose a novel architecture of photo core transform (PCT) which is used as transformation of image data into frequency domain in HD Photo, an emerging image coding system developed by Microsoft. In order to support various memory bus bandwidths used in system-on-a-chip (SoC) design, an implementation for each bandwidth can be derived based on our architecture. In addition, in order to reduce the local memory size and the traffic between the main and local memories, we propose a novel data transfer and storing scheme for PCT. The experimental results show that hardware modules corresponding to the given bus bandwidths can be reasonably derived from the proposed architecture.

We have used neural network water level trend prediction (NNWLTP) in support of a water level sensing project. The NNWLTP approach allows dynamic change in water level sampling frequency, which will reduce power consumption and extend battery life in energy constrained devices. This paper deals primarily with the NNWLTP, which would allow sampling frequency change commands to be transmitted to the sensors when a transition or turning point was detected.

Optimal Fractional Order Proportional Integral Controller for Varying Time-Delay systems

In many industrial processes, the first order plus time delay (FOPDT) is still being widely used. FOPDT systems are also called “KLT systems (gain, delay, and time constant).” Considering uncertainties in the time delay, this paper attempts to answer this research question: “ Will a fractional order controller help and do better? “ In this paper, we first focus on fractional order proportional and integral controller (FOPI) for varying time-delay systems. Based on our previously proposed FOPI controller tuning rules using fractional M s constrained integral gain optimization (F-MIGO), we tried to simultaneously maximize the jitter margin and ITAE performance (minimize ITAE performance index) for a set of hundred KLT systems having different time-constants and time-delay values. We observed that the optimization results in enlarged jitter margin of all systems at expense of a slight decrease in ITAE performance of delay dominated systems. Further, the F-MIGO optimization based tuning rules were summarized by approximation of optimized gain parameters and fractional orders α of the FOPI controller. Simulation results are presented to verify the proposed new tuning rules for best jitter margin and ITAE performance.

This paper presents a cross-modal approach of image retrieval from a medical image collection which integrates visual information based on purely low-level image contents and case related textual information from the annotated XML files. The advantages of both the modalities are exploited by involving the users in the retrieval loop. For content-based search, low-level visual features are extracted in vector form at different image representations. For text-based search, keywords from the annotated files are extracted and indexed by employing the vector space model of information retrieval. Based on the relevance feedback, textual and visual query refinements are performed and user's perceived semantics are propagated from one modality to another. Finally, the most similar images are obtained by a linear combination of similarity matching and re-ordering in a pre-filtered image set. The experiments are performed on a collection of diverse medical images with case-based annotation of each image by experts. It demonstrates the flexibility and the effectiveness of the proposed approach compared to using only a single modality or without any feedback information. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

Various systems have explored the idea of inferring 3D models from sketched 2D outlines. In all of these systems the underlying modeling methodology limits the complexity of models that can be created interactively. The ShapeShop sketch-based modeling system utilizes Hierarchical Implicit Volume Models (BlobTrees) as an underlying shape representation. The BlobTree framework supports interactive creation of complex, detailed solid models with arbitrary topology. A new technique is described for inflating 2D contours into rounded three-dimensional implicit volumes. Sketch-based modeling operations are defined that combine these basic shapes using standard blending and CSG operators. Since the underlying volume hierarchy is by definition a construction history, individual sketched components can be non-linearly edited and removed. For example, holes can be interactively dragged through a shape. ShapeShop also provides 2D drawing assistance using a new curve-sketching system based on variational contours. A wide range of models can be sketched with ShapeShop, from cartoon-like characters to detailed mechanical parts. Examples are shown which demonstrate significantly higher model complexity than existing systems. © The Eurographics Association 2005.

We present a novel approach for point-set implicit surface sampling that is able to rapidly distribute particles over the surface of 3D objects. Our methods benefit from the inner structure of a MPU implicit to obtain a near-optimal initial distribution, with higher densities in areas of higher complexity. The adequate number of particles to effectively sample the surface is determined almost automatically and in accordance to the surface characteristics. We also use the MPU information to obtain local surface complexity heuristics that are used in the simulation stage of the particle system. Shape modeling operations are directly supported and the redistribution of particles is very fast for local edits. We present performance results that show that our system is faster than other state-of-the art approaches for the same number of points. © The Eurographics Association 2007.

software patch generation is a critical phase in the life-cycle of a software vulnerability. The longer it takes to generate a patch, the higher the risk a vulnerable system needs to take to avoid from being compromised. However, in practice, it is a rather lengthy process to generate and release software patches. For example, the analysis on 10 recent Microsoft patches (MS06-045 to MS06-054) shows that, for an identified vulnerability, it took 75 days on average to generate and release the patch. In this paper, we present the design, implementation, and evaluation of AutoPaG, a system that aims at reducing the time needed for software patch generation. In our current work, we mainly focus on a common and serious type of software vulnerability: the out-of-bound vulnerability which includes buffer overflows and general boundary condition errors. Given a working out-of-bound exploit which may be previously unknown, AutoPaG is able to catch on the fly the out-of-bound violation, and then, based on data flow analysis, automatically analyzes the program source code and identifies the root cause - vulnerable source-level program statements. Furthermore, within seconds, AutoPaG generates a fine-grained source code patch to temporarily fix it without any human intervention. We have built a proof-of-concept system in Linux and the preliminary results are promising: AutoPaG is able to successfully identify the root cause and generate a source code patch within seconds for every vulnerability test in the Wilander's buffer overflow benchmark test-suite. In addition, the evaluation with a number of real-world out-of-bound exploits also demonstrates its effectiveness and practicality in automatically identifying (vulnerable) source code root causes and generating corresponding patches.
