Assurance Based Development (ABD) is an approach to the construction of critical computing systems in which the system and an argument that it meets its assurance goals are developed simultaneously. ABD touches all aspects of the system lifecycle, but in this paper we focus on how the evolving assurance argument can guide architectural choices to increase system dependability. The goals with this approach to architectural choice are twofold. The first is to develop the architecture so that it provides the required evidence. The second is to refine the assurance case as architectural choices are made so that the evidence that will be provided supports the assurance claims. Combining development and assurance in this way facilitates detection-and thereby avoidance-of potential assurance difficulties as they arise, rather than after development is complete. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2007.

The alignment of multiple protein sequences is a problem of fundamental importance in bioinformatics. In general, the optimal alignment can be obtained through the optimization of an objective function. However, such an optimization task is often computationally intractible, most of the existing alignment tools thus use statistical or machine learning based methods to avoid direct optimizations. In this paper, we develop a new method that can progressively construct and update a set of alignments by adding sequences in certain order to each of the existing alignments. In particular, each of the existing alignments is modeled with a profile hidden markov model (HMM) and an added sequence is aligned to each of these profile HMMs. The profile HMMs in the set are then updated based on the alignments with leading alignment scores. We performed experiments on BaliBASE benchmarks to compare the performance of this new approach with that of other alignment tools. Our experiments showed that, by introducing an integer parameter that controls the number of profile HMMs in the set, we are able to efficiently explore the alignment space and significantly improve the alignment accuracy on sequences with low similarity. © 2007 IEEE.

Message layer security is necessary to ensure the end-to-end security of web services. To provide the confidentiality against the intermediaries along the message path, XML Encryption is used to partially encrypt the message. Because the data structure is changed by the partial encryption, the encrypted message is no longer valid with respect to the original schema definition. So, the problems occur regarding the processing of the schema validation and the data binding by the intermediary. In this paper, we discuss the two possible methods to solve these problems. The first method is to transform the original schema definition. The second is to transform the received message. We examined these methods by applying them to demonstration experiment of web services.

In this paper, a robust vibration suppression control method for a multi-inertia (a three-inertia and a four-inertia) system by a digital modified-IPD controller is proposed. The controller consists of integral, proportional, derivative and time lag of first order element. We apply the Taguchi Method for the determination of the controller gains for several noise factors (load side inertias and stiffness of the shafts). To confirm the effectiveness of the controller structure with several conditions and the tuning method, we use a real-time simulator based on a RTLinux.

User modelling in on-line distance learning is an important research field focusing on two important aspects: describing and predicting students' actions and intentions as well as adapting the learning process to students' features, habits, preferences, and so on. The aim is to greatly stimulate and improve the learning experience. Indeed, on the one hand, students' intentions may change during the realization of learning activities and thus their actions evolve accordingly as the learning process moves forward. On the other hand, adaptive systems can effectively plan and design appropriate learning tasks according to students' features, habits and interests with the aim of facilitating the achievement of the learning goal. In this context, user modelling implies a continuous processing and analysis of user interaction data during long-term learning activities, which produces large and considerably complex information. As a consequence, processing this information is costly and could require computational capacity beyond that of a single computer. In this paper, we show how a grid approach can considerably decrease the processing time of log data of on-line distance educational Web-based systems. Our prototype is based on the master-worker paradigm and is implemented using a peer-to-peer platform running on the Planetlab nodes. The results of our study show the feasibility of using grid middleware to speed and scale up the processing of log data and thus achieve an efficient and dynamic user modeling in on-line distance learning

Thesis Award of the Faculty of Engineering The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1994. He was a consultant of SRI International in 1998. Currently he is the team leader of the Berkeley AeRobot Team and a delegate of The Graduate Assembly University of California at Berkeley. He is a student member of IEEE and SIAM. S. Shankar Sastry received his Ph.D. degree in 1981 from the University of California Berkeley. He was on the faculty of MIT from 1980-82 and Harvard University as a Gordon McKay professor in 1994. He is currently a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences and Bioengineering and Director of the Electronics Research Laboratory at Berkeley. In this paper, we use computer vision as a feedback sensor in a control loop for landing an unmanned air vehicle (UAV) on a landing pad. The vision problem we address here is then a special case of the classic ego-motion estimation problem since all feature points lie on a planar surface (the landing pad). We study together the discrete and differential versions of the ego-motion estimation, in order to obtain both position and velocity of the UAV relative to the landing pad. After briefly reviewing existing algorithm for the discrete case, we present, in a unified geometric framework, a new estimation scheme for solving the differential case. We further show how the obtained algorithms enable the vision sensor to be placed in the feedback loop as a state observer for landing control. These algorithms are linear, numerically robust, and computationally inexpensive hence suitable for real-time implementation. We present a thorough performance evaluation of the motion estimation algorithms under varying levels of image measurement noise, altitudes of the camera above the landing pad, and different camera motions relative to the landing pad. A landing controller is then designed for a full dynamic model of the UAV. Using geometric nonlinear control theory, the dynamics of the UAV are decoupled into an inner system and outer system. The proposed control scheme is then based on the differential flatness of the outer system. For the overall closed-loop system, conditions are provided under which exponential stability can be guaranteed. In the closed-loop system, the controller is tightly coupled with the vision based state estimation and the only auxiliary sensor are accelerometers for measuring acceleration of the UAV. Finally, we show through simulation results that the designed vision-in-the-loop controller generates stable landing maneuvers even for large levels of image measurement noise. Experiments on a real UAV will be presented in future work.

The IT industry is beginning to mirror a trend of specialization and outsourcing that has been present for decades in other industries, such as the automotive industry. We are beginning to see the emergence of specialist service providers, such as CRM services and market places, payment and settlement services, bill presentment services and many others. Organizations increasingly use these services in complex enterprise application systems using web service infrastructures. Unlike the automotive industry, however, the IT industry does not yet have an agreed way to manage web service quality. In this talk, I will focus on managing the service quality of web services that are used across organizational boundaries. I discuss the systematic definition of formal service level agreement languages that support the precise definition of service quality, such as latency, throughput, availability and reliability. I present how service level agreements written in these languages can be used and describe how service level agreements can be policed. I conclude the talk by sketching further research that is necessary before we have a similar grip on quality as other engineering disciplines. Copyright 2006 ACM.
