over the last few years, Grid technologies have progressed towards a service-oriented paradigm that enables a new way of service provisioning based on utility computing models. Users consume these services based on their QoS (Quality of Service) requirements. In such "pay-per-use" Grids, workflow execution cost must be considered during scheduling based on users' QoS constraints. In this paper, we propose a cost-based workflow scheduling algorithm that minimizes execution cost while meeting the deadline for delivering results. It can also adapt to the delays of service executions by rescheduling unexecuted tasks. We also attempt to optimally solve the task scheduling problem in branches with several sequential tasks by modeling the branch as a Markov Decision Process and using the value iteration method. © 2005 IEEE.

Current email-control mechanisms, though highly effective, are prone to dropping desirable messages, This can be attributed to their coarseness in filtering out undesirable messages from desirable ones. As a result policies to control undesirable messages are often overly permissive. To allow policies to be more restrictive, the transmission mechanism must be made aware of the ways to document a message so that it is acceptable downstream, thus giving the senders a chance of meeting those requirements, In this work, we design a scheme to enable rejected, but desirable messages to be upgraded in a way that they meet downstream requirements. We call this process 'message refinement'. This in turn allows downstream principals to express and enforce precise requirements as the risk of losing desirable messages is minimized. To apply this scheme uniformly to any email-control mechanism, we provide a flexible and extensible policy language to express message acceptance preferences. We use a constraint logic programming approach to specifying and evaluating these policies and show that their evaluation can be accomplished in PTIME. This supports our belief that this technique can be practically applied. Copyright 2005 ACM.

Product Family engineering (PFE) is an approach to software engineering that seeks to reduce the global effort in producing multiple software products by actively promoting and governing the reuse of assets between the family members. However, PFE is highly demanding, putting stringent demands on careful planning and management in the organization. To leverage the full opportunities offered by PFE, its introduction and use requires effective coordination of people and organizational units. This paper presents a solution to support this coordination by exploring concepts from the area of communities of practices for PFE. The expected benefit is that communities offer a more adaptive approach supporting the transition towards PFE compared to formal organizational restructuring. In this paper, we will describe our considerations about the building principles for organizations using a shared platform for the family members and a study proposal that will examine the effects of knowledge brokering among Communities of Practice as a means to assist PFE. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

For generations, the academic community has relied on peer review as a way of encouraging scholarship and enhancing the knowledge base. Peer review has been widely used in the classroom since at least the 1970s, with hundreds of papers on its use in diverse academic fields appearing in the literature (for a comprehensive survey, see [1]). Its use appears to be on the upswing, given the current interest in active learning and teamwork. In computer science, peer review seems to have very broad application. It can be used to evaluate the contributions of various members to a project team;it can be used for design documents and code reviews, in writing assignments, and in capstone project courses. The experience of the panelists is illustrative of the wide range of peer-review practices. This panel will serve to introduce the audience to some of these applications. Since many computer-science instructors have experimented with peer review, we are anxious to have them share their experiences during the open discussion period.

Faculty from Oakland University's engineering, business and education schools are working together with Oakland's Pawley Institute to teach students about lean manufacturing using an interdisciplinary approach. The goal is to educate future employees about lean from a diverse perspective before they enter the workforce. By providing students with the knowledge and skills to use lean principles and tools to solve real world problems, these future employees will add immediate value to the companies that hire them. These Oakland University faculty members have developed an interdisciplinary course entitled "Lean Principles and Application." This elective course is taken by students enrolled in engineering, business, and human resource development degree programs. A key component of the course is a semester long project that involves analyzing the performance of a local manufacturing company and developing a plan for implementing a lean program. Interdisciplinary teams of students work on the project with company personnel. © 2005 IEEE.

Continuous audio-visual surveillance is utilized to ensure the physical safety of critical infrastructures such as airports, nuclear power plants and national laboratories. In order to do so, traditional surveillance systems place cameras, microphones and other sensory input devices in appropriate locations [Sch99]. These facilities are arranged in a hierarchy of physical zones reflecting the secrecy of the guarded information. Guards in these facilities carry clearances that permit them only in appropriate zones of the hierarchy, and monitor the facilities by using devices such as hand-held displays that send streaming media of the guarded zones possibly with some instructions. The main security constraint applicable to this model is that any guard can see streams emanating from locations with secrecy levels equal to or lower than theirs, but not higher. We show how to model these surveillance requirements using the synchronized multimedia integration language (SMIL) [Aya01] with appropriate security enhancements. Our solution consists of imposing a multi-level security model on SMIL documents to specify surveillance requirements. Our access control model ensures that a multimedia stream can only be displayed on a device if the security clearance of the display device dominates the security clearance of the monitored zone. Additionally, we pre-process a set of cover stories that can be released during emergency situations that allow using the services of guards with lower clearances without disclosing data with higher sensitive levels. For this, we create a view for each level, and show that these views are semantically coherent and comply with specified security polices. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

Evolutionary computation (EC) has been successfully applied to a wide range of design problems. There has also been an abundant amount of work in applying interactive ECs in the design of displays, robot behavior, bitmaps, etc. In the EC literature, one can also see a number of successful design applications of distributed ECs. However, to date, there has been no research in the area of interactive distributed ECs. In this paper, we present an interactive distributed evolutionary algorithm (IDEA) for the design of simple emoticons. We will discuss two ways that our IDEA is currently being used including the areas of EC education and Human Factors. © 2005 IEEE.

Almost all major news and professional publications document IT Offshoring & Outsourcing (O&O), which has caused job losses in the US and drops in computer science/information science (CS/IS) enrollment. Public opinion and understanding of O&o has several misconception such as non availability of onshore jobs in the CS/IT industry. To increase CS/IS enrollments students, parents, and administrators should be educated about the realities of IT job market. Various ways should be devised to increase student retention without decreasing standards, through more effective pedagogy and better student support.

To increase the likelihood for software project success, it is important to be able to identify the drivers of success. This paper compares three methods to identify similar projects with the objective to predict project success. The hypothesis is that projects with similar characteristics are likely to have the same outcome in terms of success. Two of the methods are based on identifying similar projects using all available information. The first method of these aims at identifying the most similar project. The second method identifies a group of projects as most similar. Finally, the third method pinpoints some key characteristics to identify project similarity. Our measure of success for these identifications is whether project success for these projects identified as similar is the same. The comparison between methods is done in a case study with 46 projects with varying characteristics. The paper evaluates the performance of each method with regards to its ability to predict project success. The method using key drivers of project success is superior to the others in the case study. Thus, it is concluded that it is important for software developing organizations to identify its key project characteristics to improve its control over project success. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.
