Prediction of software defects is an important aspect of software quality assurance, aiming to identify defective modules to improve reliability and reduce costs in the maintenance process. A systematic literature review (SLR) on software defect prediction is presented in this study, focusing on identifying commonly used datasets, methods, and frameworks in this domain between 2014 and 2023. The review follows established SLR guidelines to synthesize data from primary studies, providing insight into research trends as well as methodological advances. The results show a significant reliance on public datasets such as the NASA Metrics Data program (MDP) and the PROMISE repository. Various machine-learning techniques have been used, with Neural networks, support vector machines, and random forests becoming the most popular techniques. This review aims to guide future research by highlighting key trends and gaps in the existing literature. © 2024 IEEE.

Exploring brain connectivity is made possible through the combination of transcranial magnetic stimulation and electroencephalography (TMS-EEG) signals. While previous research has investigated hemispheric asymmetries in signal propagation at the electrode space following occipital TMS, this work extends this exploration at the source level. The sources of the neural activity were reconstructed using EEG data and mapped into regions of interest. The TMS evoked potential (TEP) was estimated using a Bayesian approach, which provides better results when the number of trials is limited. Subsequently, time-varying effective connectivity was calculated for uncovering hemispheric asymmetries in the dynamics of signal propagation. A distinct contralateral influence emerged following stimulation of the left occipital lobe, especially toward the parietal and frontal lobes, aligning with the observations on the scalp. In conclusion, our study advances the understanding of brain connectivity dynamics, particularly in hemispheric interactions, and paves the way for further insights into the implications of TMS on neural networks. © 2024 IEEE.

Smart city platforms manage resources and information to offer services to citizens. Developing technological solutions for this scenario is not trivial, given data and resource heterogeneity and the need for platform flexibility and adaptability. This work presents UFCity, a software architecture for smart city data ecosystems using microservices, artificial intelligence, and a three-layer networking structure. As a proof of concept, we developed a prototype and tested it in usage scenarios with real data. These use cases explored how our solution solves identified problems, showing meeting essential requirements for smart city platforms. In this way, UFCity is an alternative for data management in a smart city, presenting advantages over other solutions listed in this work in meeting the platform requirements. © 2023 IEEE.

For microscopic cells images, cells’ morphologies are widely varied among different imaging modalities and staining methods. For fluorescence microscopy images, Poisson noises present in images due to the lightening, causing photobleaching, which makes it challenging in analysis with the deep learning models. Traditionally, median filtering can be applied to the original image for denoising, however, it also results in a blurry image, which is harmful to segmentation. In this study, the Haar Wavelet Transform is used to alleviate the photobleaching problem for cell segmentation, integrated to the framework without interfering with feature extraction by the backbone model. For our experiments, instance segmentation for fluorescence-stained cells was performed based on U-Net architecture with the method of gradient flow tracking proposed by Cellpose. And the Haar wavelet downsampling is embedded in the skip connections to verify if it can improve the segmentation performance for fluorescence images. The experimental results show that the approach of Haar wavelet downsampling embedded in the skip connections achieve superior performance among the other settings. Compared with the performance of the baseline model, the performance of the proposed model reached 0.732 in F1-score, which surpassed the one of baseline model (0.6341) by almost 0.1. © The Institution of Engineering & Technology 2024.

Segmentation of anatomical structures leverages medical imaging technology for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. Recent advances in active learning offer the opportunity for the interactive creation of artificial intelligence (AI) segmentation algorithms. Although active learning has been extensively investigated retrospectively, prospective studies have not been widely reported. This study aimed to determine whether a novice in medical imaging could independently label anatomical structures using Radiopaedia, 20% of clinician-generated labels for education of the novice, and AI guidance. Given the pancreas and spleen challenges from the Medical Segmentation Decathlon (MSD), a novice employed the MONAI Label extension on 3D Slicer with active learning (AL) techniques to perform segmentation. This study also explored the use of MONAI (Medical Open Network for AI) Label, a user-friendly framework for label submission and model training. Our segmentation results yielded Dice scores comparable to the range of those from the 2018 segmentation challenges of the MSD. We achieved Dice scores of 0.209 for the pancreas task using 70 images and 0.831 for the spleen using 34 images. The pancreas results do not fall within MSD’s reported ranges for the L1 region which is 0.48-0.80. However, the spleen results fall within the MSD’s reported range of 0.83-0.97. The interactive AI framework by MONAI Label effectively segments as we reached reasonable performance in less than a month with one person without clinical expertise. © 2025 SPIE.

Paralysis is a debilitating condition that affects more than 5.4 million people in the U.S. In severe cases, the paralyzed patient is incapable of communication. Restoring this communication is a primary goal of caretakers and is critical to improving the patient's quality of life. Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) that directly access signals from the motor cortex are a promising method of circumventing the condition causing paralysis, typically using machine learning (ML) to predict motor intent from brain signals. However, BCIs are highly invasive and subjects have primarily been limited to patients with mild to moderate paralysis. The Stentrode is a novel technology that records electroencephalographic (EEG) signals via an electrode array placed endovascularly in the superior sagittal sinus. The first clinical trials of this technology aim to enable digital communication for severely paralyzed patients, translating brain signals from attempted movements into computer control inputs like mouse clicks. However, recordings of EEG are often contaminated with artifacts, including biopotentials arising from other excitable tissues, such as the heart and skeletal muscle. This study characterizes the electrocardiographic (ECG) artifact detected in the Stentrode recordings and proposes an automated Independent Component Analysis (ICA) method for removing this artifact. We compare the effectiveness of this method to previous methods for removal. Quantifying and eliminating the cardiac artifact is critical to accurately decode signals from the motor cortex and restore patients' ability to communicate. © 2024 IEEE.

In order to analyze progresses of rheumatoid arthritis, we are developing an application to measure the distance between finger joints from X-ray images. In this paper, we focus on second joints, which are known to be prone to arthritis. We have proposed a method of filtering images and detecting edges, which has improved accuracy. Experimental results show that practical application of this system will reduce the burden on physicians and contribute to early detection of rheumatoid arthritis. © 2023 IEEE.

The number of songs is increasing at an explosive rate which has led to the development of automatic song categorization systems. Songs are categorized in different ways like genre, artist, beats per minute (BPM), etc. It is also very important to categorize songs based on their emotional content as the audience often prefers songs of a particular mood. The lyrics of a song become available online instantly after the release of the song itself. This sets the stage for an automated song classification system based on lyrics. In this paper, a system is presented to address this problem. The system was tested with 400 songs from 2 categories namely happy and sad. The dataset was composed of disparate artists, genres, and timelines wherein the highest accuracy of 83.25% was obtained using a heterogeneous ensemble learning-based approach. © 2023 IEEE.

Students’ interactions while solving problems in learning environments (i.e. log data) are often used to support students’ learning. For example, researchers use log data to develop systems that can provide students with personalized problem recommendations based on their knowledge level. However, anomalies in the students’ log data, such as cheating to solve programming problems, could introduce a hidden bias in the log data. As a result, these systems may provide inaccurate problem recommendations, and therefore, defeat their purpose. Classical cheating detection methods, such as MOSS, can be used to detect code plagiarism. However, these methods cannot detect other abnormal events such as a student gaming a system with multiple attempts of similar solutions to a particular programming problem. This paper presents a preliminary study to analyze log data with anomalies. The goal of our work is to overcome the abnormal instances when modeling personalizable recommendations in programming learning environments. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

The recent availability of consumer head-mounted displays (HMDs) for virtual reality (VR) provides an immersive and affordable platform to study sound perception and action outside laboratory settings. While traditional perception-action studies rely on complex systems like motion capture, HMDs integrate dynamic sound delivery and real-time movement tracking. In this study, we adapted the experimental protocol from Geronazzo et al. (2023) to test the feasibility of measuring user behaviour with a consumer-grade HMD. Instead of muscular activity measured from surface electromyography, we analysed reaction times using kinematic data from the HMD's onboard sensors and controllers. Data from ten participants showed that spatial properties of looming sounds influence auditory perception-action loops, aligning with findings from the original study. Our results demonstrate that reaction time is a scalable and meaningful measure for studying space perception through sound, providing a possible alternative to muscular activity measurements and showcasing the potential of consumer-grade VR for accessible and robust experimental research despite current limitations. © 2025 IEEE.
