The paper [2] argued that mathematical ideas play an important role in the computer science curriculum, and that Discrete Mathematics needs to be taught early in the computer science curriculum. In this follow-up paper, we present evidence that computer science curricula are drifting away from a fundamental commitment to theoretical and mathematical ideas. We propose some actions that can be taken to help reverse this drift.

Since the proposal of the well-known Apriori algorithm and the subsequent establishment of the area known as Frequent Itemset Mining, most of the scientific contribution of the data mining area have been focused on the study of methods that improve its efficiency and its applicability in new domains. The interest in the extraction of this sort of patterns lies in its expressiveness and syntactic simplicity. However, due to the large quantity of frequent patterns that are generally obtained, the evaluation process, necessary for obtaining useful knowledge, it is difficult to be achieved in practice. In this paper we present a formal method to summarize the whole set of mined frequent patterns into a single probability distribution in the framework of the Transferable Belief Model (TBM). The probability function is obtained applying the Pignistic Transformation on the patterns, obtaining a compact model that synthesizes the regularities present in the dataset and serves as a basis for the knowledge discovery and decision making processes. In this work, we also present a real case study by describing an application of our proposal in the field of neuroscience. In particular, our main goal is focused on the behavioral characterization, via pignistic distribution on attentional cognitive variables, of group of children pre-diagnosed with one of the three types of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Smart city platforms manage resources and information to offer services to citizens. Developing technological solutions for this scenario is not trivial, given data and resource heterogeneity and the need for platform flexibility and adaptability. This work presents UFCity, a software architecture for smart city data ecosystems using microservices, artificial intelligence, and a three-layer networking structure. As a proof of concept, we developed a prototype and tested it in usage scenarios with real data. These use cases explored how our solution solves identified problems, showing meeting essential requirements for smart city platforms. In this way, UFCity is an alternative for data management in a smart city, presenting advantages over other solutions listed in this work in meeting the platform requirements. © 2023 IEEE.

Currently technological research in the translating has penetrated to image processing. One of the role of image processing is optical character recognition technology on various platform, an example on Android OS. However, the current research on image processing of translating with the native regional language of Indonesia still rarely. In this research, writers performs the implementation of Latin text translate from Bahasa Indonesia into Javanese text with Google Mobile Vision in real-time, also vice versa with Android mobile based application. Which is Google Mobile Vision is one of the open API optical character recognition library with pattern recognition method. With the design of client server architecture, writers develop Android application as client and Web Service that can process REST API and interact with the database. The output of this research is an application for translate that can scan words in Javanese into Bahasa Indonesia, or vice versa in frame of an Android application. By this research, it expect to be the benchmark for image processing research for native regional language of Indonesia. © 2018 IEEE.

Drawing on Merritt's divide-and-conquer sorting taxonomy, we model comparison-based sorting as an abstract class with a template method to perform the sort by relegating the splitting and joining of arrays to its concrete subclasses. Comparison on objects is carried out via an abstract ordering strategy. This reduces code complexity and simplifies the analyses of the various concrete sorting algorithms. Performance measurements and visualizations can be added without modifying any code by utilizing the decorator design pattern. This object-oriented design not only provides the student a concrete way of unifying seemingly disparate sorting algorithms but also help him/her differentiate them at the proper level of abstraction.

Star networks have been recently proposed as an attractive choice for interconnection networks. They have sublogarithmic node degree and diameter and, like hypercubes, have a highly recursive structure. Several researchers have endeavored to prove that star networks are as versatile as hypercubes. The paper is an effort in the same direction. It presents optimal algorithms for computing disjoint paths in star graphs for two well known paradigms. It also studies the problem of disjoint connecting paths and presents an efficient algorithm for finding a limited number of such paths in the star network. © 1991 IEEE.

Human movement is a direct result of brain commands to muscles. The muscle activity can be analyzed with an electromyograph device and produce a recording in the form of an electromyogram or EMG signal. There are two recording methods, namely intramuscular EMG and surface EMG or sEMG which are easier and more convenient to implement but have lower resolution. Analysis of the EMG record data will be better if the right method is chosen, one of which is the selection of feature extraction methods. This study performs basic finger motion classification with a limited number of electrodes, namely 4 electrodes. The purpose of this research is to compare the variation of features in the time or frequency domain that will be used for classification using artificial neural networks (ANN) and long short-term memory (LSTM). Data acquisition was carried out with the Ganglion Board device on 6 subjects aged 20-22 years who conducted experiments with two kinds of movements, namely opening and holding all fingers alternately. The results of this study indicate that the use of time domain features for classification with ANN produces better accuracy than LSTM. This can happen because the duration of the movement in this study is quite short, which is only for two seconds. The results of the use of the frequency domain feature show that the use of LSTM produces better accuracy, especially on the mean power and median frequency characteristics. © 2022 IEEE.

Human Development Index (HDI) is a reference to how far the administration can develops their people. The development of a territory is related to a prosperity of the people. This research is focused on Human Development Index in West Java, a Province of Indonesia. Research identifies variables which are influence and very important to HDI and compares the model of CART and C5.0 algorithm based on HDI concept that has developed by United Nation (UN). Research uses 14 variables which are commonly used for measuring HDI and found that there are two variables that most influencing to HDI, MYS-index and EDU-Index. By knowing the MYS and EDU-Index research can predict and classify each territory to its HDI. Research could be conducted to predict HDI in the other territory. The results evaluated by measuring the accuracy and confusion matrix, 91.35 for CART algorithm and 90.80 for C5.0 algorithm. © 2018 IEEE.

In order to analyze progresses of rheumatoid arthritis, we are developing an application to measure the distance between finger joints from X-ray images. In this paper, we focus on second joints, which are known to be prone to arthritis. We have proposed a method of filtering images and detecting edges, which has improved accuracy. Experimental results show that practical application of this system will reduce the burden on physicians and contribute to early detection of rheumatoid arthritis. © 2023 IEEE.

Sports analytics have become an important part in the improvement of athlete performances in the last decade. Badminton is one such sport where sports analytics can prove beneficial for its athletes. By incorporating data analysis and machine learning techniques, we can learn more about an athlete's performance and profile them via their results in official badminton matches, and coaches as well as athletes may use the results to identify possible improvements for the athlete. This work presents a model to profile the performances of two Indonesian badminton athletes through machine learning using official score data of matches played from 2018 to 2021. We have built a model that performs athlete profiling through regression, classification, and clustering methods. Our result shows that Random Forest outperformed SVM method on regression and the two methods performed similarly on classification, while K-means and hierarchical clustering models displayed similar results in data clustering. © 2022 IEEE.
