We design a study assess to improve the speed in a P300 Brain-computer Interface, originally described by Farewell and Donchin in 1988. A grid of characters is displayed on a screen randomly, and when the character of interest is illuminated, 300ms afterwards a deflection in the EEG signal is generated. In such scenarios, the time to specify a menu option is proportional to its size. Most researchers in the past have considered fixed menu size and focused on more advanced statistical detection/classification techniques. We propose to use statistical language structure to introduce a new degree of freedom in this paradigm. Finding the optimal policy to display menus, given previously conveyed characters, can be cast in terms of "dynamic programming" or "stochastic control". We illustrate how the optimal policy of this dynamic programming problem satisfies a menu dept. to character probability relation analogous to that of the Huffman code in data compression and information theory. By exploiting this optimality property, we illustrate how the state space of the stochastic control problem can be greatly diminished (from exponential growth to linear growth), and we exhibit optimal policies for a probabilistic model pertaining to the statistical structure of the English language.

Selecting and precomputing indexes and materialized views, with the goal of improving query-processing performance, is an important part of database-performance tuning. The significant complexity of the view- and index-selection problem may result in high total cost of ownership for database systems. In this paper, we develop efficient methods that deliver user-specified quality of the set of selected views and indexes when given view- and index-based plans as problem inputs. Here, quality means proximity to the globally optimum performance for the input query workload given the input query plans. Our experimental results and comparisons on synthetic and benchmark instances demonstrate the competitiveness of our approach and show that it provides a winning combination with end-to-end view- and indexselection frameworks such as those of [1, 2].

The connectivity of the nervous system of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans has been described completely, but the analysis of the neuronal basis of behavior in this system is just beginning. Here, we used an optimization algorithm to search for patterns of connectivity sufficient to compute the sensorimotor transformation underlying C. elegans chemotaxis, a simple form of spatial orientation behavior in which turning probability is modulated by the rate of change of chemical concentration. Optimization produced differentiator networks with inhibitory feedback among all neurons. Further analysis showed that feedback regulates the latency between sensory input and behavior. Common patterns of connectivity between the model and biological networks suggest new functions for previously identified connections in the C. elegans nervous system.
