The main question this paper addresses is: What combination of a robot controller and a learning method should be used, if the morphology of the learning robot is not known in advance? Our interest is rooted in the context of morphologically evolving modular robots, but the question is also relevant in general, for system designers interested in widely applicable solutions. We perform an experimental comparison of three controller-and-learner combinations: one approach where controllers are based on modelling animal locomotion (Central Pattern Generators, CPG) and the learner is an evolutionary algorithm, a completely different method using Reinforcement Learning (RL) with a neural network controller architecture, and a combination 'in-between' where controllers are neural networks and the learner is an evolutionary algorithm. We apply these three combinations to a test suite of modular robots and compare their efficacy, efficiency, and robustness. Surprisingly, the usual CPG-based and RL-based options are outperformed by the in-between combination that is more robust and efficient than the other two setups. © 2023 IEEE.

Satellite imagery offers extensive information that can be used for a variety of societal applications, from the number of buildings in a metropolis to the land cover types of a specific area. However, extracting such information is a difficult task. In the past, images were scanned manually by domain experts to extract features like buildings, infrastructure, and vegetation, which would take weeks or even months depending on the image size. To address this challenge, we trained our model using U-Net architecture, a deep learning model, because of its advantages in multiscale feature learning and faster processing. Data augmentation is done on the dataset in order to enhance the amount of data and prevent overfitting artificially. The trained model achieved an F1 score of 92% and an impressive precision score of 95%. This automated method can be scaled to large sets of data, reducing the need for human labeling. © 2024 Bharati Vidyapeeth, New Delhi.

Payment Channel Networks (PCNs) can significantly enhance the scalability of blockchain transactions without requiring major modifications to the underlying distributed ledger protocol. However, to enable efficient and secure payment routing over multiple channels, PCNs necessitate additional components: an onion routing protocol for anonymity and a locking mechanism to prevent race conditions. Unfortunately, these mechanisms can be exploited by malicious actors to launch flood and loot attacks. We investigate the impact of flood and loot attacks on networks that employ local knowledge-based routing algorithms. In these scenarios, malicious nodes can manipulate hash-locks to unfairly capitalize on the benefits of participating nodes. We specifically examine the effects of these attacks on three popular routing algorithms: Swift, Speedy Murmurs, and Silent Whispers. Our analysis employs metrics like attack gain, attack cost, and transaction ratio to assess the impact of the attacks. Our simulation-based results demonstrate that, even with a relatively small fraction of malicious nodes (between 0.66% and 3.3%), the average attack transaction ratio across all evaluated routing algorithms is a concerning 16.23%. © 2025 IEEE.

The composition and proportion parameters of temperature sensitive paint formulation are complex. The current methods have a long development cycle and low efficiency. We design a visual formulation design system for temperature sensitive paint, helps desingers use historical data to improve the efficiency of formulation design. TSPvis provides a visual formulation design function, implements the proportion decision of formulation based on decision tree, and recommends reference for ingredients proportion to the formulation designer. We use the DPC clustering algorithm to quickly obtain the radial basis center, and use the Adam algorithm to improve the weight calculation from the hidden layer to the output layer, to improve RBF neural network. TSPvis use this RBF as a model to predict performance of the formulation which designed before, and feeds back to the designer to improve the formulation designing of temperature sensitive paint. © 2023 IEEE.

Cataracts, a prevalent eye condition impacting vision, demand accurate and prompt identification for effective risk reduction and blindness prevention. Traditional methods of cataract diagnosis rely heavily on manual examination by ophthalmologists, which can be time-consuming and subject to human error. With the advent of digital imaging technology, there is an opportunity to enhance the efficiency of cataract detection. The deep neural network models VGG19 and ResNet-50 are recommended in this paper for automatic cataract identification on digital camera images. To optimize network performance, adjustments to loss and activation functions were made, incorporating minimal kernels, reduced training parameters, and layers. This resulted in a ResNet-50 model with significantly decreased computational cost and average operating time compared to the cutting-edge models. The proposed ResNet 50 model achieved an average accuracy of 93.41%, outperforming the VGG 19 model, which had an accuracy of 91.13%. This research contributes to the evolution of cataract detection methodologies, emphasizing the potential of deep learning models, particularly ResNet-50, in improving diagnostic accuracy and operational efficiency for enhanced eye health outcomes. © 2024 IEEE.

Testing is essential for successful delivery of software solutions and is not always performed by specialist testers. In earlier studies, we noted a wide diversity in the backgrounds of the testers participating in these studies, prompting our research question: Who is Testing? We conducted a qualitative study of over 70 industry testers, covering testers from multiple countries and domains, with information about their backgrounds, hobbies, roles and characteristics. We show testers are from a wide range of backgrounds, with differing needs, characteristics, and problem-solving preferences. Their roles in software projects are multi-faceted, requiring a high cognitive skill level. We discuss how to break stereotyping and best support diversity in testers’ backgrounds and characteristics. We consider whether software testers are different from other software practitioners, and how understanding tester personas helps support of testers and testing. © Evans et al.

This study provides an innovative architectural model for e-Health systems that aims to improve cyber resilience while maintaining high availability under fluctuating traffic loads. We examined typical cybersecurity incidents in the field of e-Health, their correlations with architectural defects, and frequent design patterns in currently operational systems. A testing approach based on our research finds those weaknesses and proposes viable fixes. In this paper, a comprehensive support strategy for transitioning from conventional monolithic architectures to microservices is presented. This change makes use of cloud computing's vertical and horizontal scalability to maximize resource utilization while ensuring system reliability. We also discuss deployment ideas for the new microservices, focusing on operational resilience and cybersecurity in e-Health environments. © 2025, Politechnica University of Bucharest. Measurement data obtained from "things"in the Internet of Things (IoT) faces challenges in efficient transmission due to the low-bandwidth data transmission *** observe that measurement data are fixed in size and format, and low-entropy in the time domain, indicating that compression can be benefited. Rather than employing a single compression algorithm as advocated in existing literature, we argue that optimal transmission can be achieved by jointly considering compression overheads and network status, where software-defined networking (SDN) is employed to enforce network statistics and packet forwarding. This paper presents a new paradigm that achieves optimal transmission of SDN-empowered compressed measurement data. We formulate the problem as an optimization problem and prove its non-polynomial hardness time complexity. Due to this complexity, we introduce COMPRESSO, a heuristic algorithm that efficiently solves the problem. We conduct rigorous simulations, and the results demonstrate the efficiency of the new paradigm and COMPRESSO, i.e., attaining comparable performance to the optimal solution with 50% time usage reduction. © 2014 IEEE.

Proficiency in mathematics is essential for both academic and professional success, yet many students find the subject difficult, especially when preparing for important exams like Sri Lanka's General Certificate of Education (G.C.E.) Ordinary Level examination. In Sri Lanka, the students show poor pass rates in Ordinary Level mathematics examination. In order to improve mathematics education for O/L students, this research suggests an innovative mobile application that makes use of adaptive learning strategies. This application features components like a comprehensive knowledge bank that is curriculum-mapped, pre-assessment tools for identifying knowledge shortages, a weaknesses based lesson recommendation for personalized lesson suggestions, a custom developed chat assistant to interact with the knowledge bank, interactive 3D visualizations and justifications of complex concepts, and platforms for problem-solving, writing, and time management skill development. The suggested adaptive learning strategy makes use of multimedia tools and datadriven insights to tailor instruction to each student's unique needs, improving math comprehension and readiness for the O/L examination in Sri Lanka. © 2024 IEEE.
