In this paper, we present a novel approach to achieve global adaptation in neuro-fuzzy controllers. The adaptation process is achieved by means of two auxiliary systems: The first one is responsible for adapting the consequents of the main controller's rules with the target of minimizing the error arising at the plant output. The second auxiliary system compiles real input/output data obtained from the plant, which are then used in real time taking into account, not the current state of the plant but rather the global identification performed. Simulation results show that this approach leads to an enhanced control policy avoiding overfitting. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

Today speech recognition is requested not only to decode utterances into transcriptions,but also to determine the reliabilities of the results,by Speech verification (SV) or Utterance Verification (UV). With conventional HMM, the measure of reliabilities can not be determined directly by the likelihoods of models. Whereas, Simplified Segmental Probability Model (SSPM), suggested in this paper,with its normalized likelihood, facilitates rendering SV and speech recognition at the same time and as a whole. SSPM also costs much less computation load than conventional HMM. In the paper, Integrated Anti-word Model (IAM) is suggested, which is used to advance the measure of SV likelihood of *** experiments show high performance and moderate computation with IAM.

The digital part of a low power single chip digital beamformer for use in low-cost handheld ultrasound imaging systems is presented. To ensure lowest power dissipation for battery operated systems, a quantitative optimization strategy from system down to physical layout level was employed. A cascadable test chip comprising a single processing channel was realized in a 0.5 μm CMOS technology. Operating at 40 MHz the digital part dissipates 25mW from a dual 1.8 V/3.3 V power supply. © 2001 IEEE.

A flexible datapath generator for the physical oriented design of optimized building blocks in the area of DSP ASIC design is presented. The generator concept combines the advantages of full-custom macros regarding power dissipation, silicon area, and throughput rate with a low design effort and high flexibility. Hence, the datapath generator enables the physical oriented design of parameterizable IP blocks. Industry related benchmarks demonstrate the performance of the datapath generator. © 2001 IEEE.

We address the problems of implementing the replication operator efficiently in the solos calculus – a calculus of mobile processes without prefix. This calculus is expressive enough to admit an encoding of the whole fusion calculus and thus theπ-calculus. We show that nested occurrences of replication can be avoided, that the size of replicated terms can be limited to three particles, and that the usual unfolding semantics of replication can be replaced by three simple reduction rules. To illustrate the results and show how the calculus can be efficiently implemented we present a graphic representation of agents in the solos calculus, adapting ideas from interaction diagrams and pi-nets. © 2001 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper presents a data-parallel formulation for N−body simulations using the Barnes-Hut method. The tree-structured problem is first linearized by using space-filling curves. This process allows us to use standard data distributions and parallel array operations available in data-parallel languages. A new efficient HPF implementation of the Barnes-Hut method is presented in this paper, characterized by the use of array copy sections to express communications, obtaining efficient point-to-point data transferences. In addition, HPF LOCAL constructs are used to obtain very compact and efficient local (node) codes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

“Team Sweden” is the Swedish national team that entered the Sony legged robot league at the RoboCup ’99 and RoboCup 2000 competitions. We had two main requirements in mind when preparing our entries: 1. The entry should effectively address the specific challenges present in this domain; in particular, it should be able to tolerate errors and imprecision in perception and execution; and 2. it should illustrate our research in autonomous robotics, by incorporating general techniques that can be reused in different robots and environments. While the first requirement could have been met by writing some ad hoc competition software, the second one led us to develop principled solutions that drew upon our current research in robotics, and that pushed it further ahead.

This paper aims at developing a fully automated hull form design technique employing an Neural Network and Genetic Algorithm methods resulting in accelerated convergence. For generating an input data that will be, by and large, a close relative of the desired hull, a linear relation has been assumed between the half breadth of different sections and principal dimensions (length, breadth, draft or (displacement)13) of a particular type of vessel. Compared to starting with a random value of the input, this technique resulted in faster convergence. The weight matrix for each of these parameters is produced from data obtained from the population. The half-breadth table for a new vessel can be obtained by multiplying the weight matrix with corresponding parameter. However, the half-breadth table obtained in such way may not provide the required displacement and speed of the vessel. Therefore, some readjustments of some of the principal dimensions are required. Neural Networks (Wasserman, 1989) has been used to find the required values of such improved design parameters (principal dimensions). The final design process consists of searching for the exact solution by examining several generations generated by the GA (Goldberg, 1989). The convergence criterion is the summed offset error, which is to be within the envelope defined by the tolerances. Since GA doesn't guarantee fairness of the surface of the hull form, B-spline curve fitting method is used to obtain a fair hull. Thus, the hull form generated through this process is fully automated, accurate and having fair surface. The technique is also found to be an efficient one. Copyright © 2001 by ASmE.

The primary objective of the Multimedia Router (MMR) project is the design and implementation of a compact router optimized or multimedia applications. The router is targeted for use in cluster and LAN interconnection networks, which offer different constraints and therefore differing router solutions than WANs. One of the key design parameters is the amount of buffer space, which is closely related to the silicon area required to implement the router. In this paper, the MMR performance obtained when varying the size of the input buffers is explored. Preliminary results show that buffers as small as one flit large suffice to guarantee QoS to both CBR and VBR traffic, thanks to the use of flow control and short links. © 2001 IEEE.
