In this contribution we present a controller tuning method which combines some of the advantages of Iterative Feedback Tuning (IFT) with some of the advantages of simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA). In particular this scheme can be shown to converge with geometric rate when a pure gradient search is used and the system is noise free. The number of experiments required to obtain an unbiased estimate of the gradient can be reduced significantly for multi-input multi-output systems. In particular we study the problem where the reference signal is periodic and when the noise is negligible.

"Burst mode" is a new cipher mode, which is devised dedicatedly for the high performance implementation of the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) and other next generation 128-bit block cipher algorithms. In comparison with the conventional modes, the burst mode achieves a considerable increase in the throughput by employing a novel stream cipher mechanism which can encrypt 64 plaintext blocks through 16 times of block cipher encryptions. This paper presents a high performance VLSI architecture of burst mode implemented as an accelerator core running in parallel with a block cipher in software. Implementation results show that this burst mode with the use of this hardware accelerator raises the speed of the software implementation by four times, achieving a maximum rate of 3.4 Gbps.

We describe a research project on resolving semantic differences for multi-agent systems (MAS) in electronic commerce. The approach can be characterized as follows: (1) agents in a MAS may have their own specific ontologies defined on top of a shared base ontology; (2) concepts in these ontologies are represented as frame-like structures based on DAML+OIL language; (3) the semantic differences between agents are resolved at runtime through inter-agent communication; and (4) the resolution is viewed as an abductive inference process, and thus necessarily involves approximate reasoning.

Today speech recognition is requested not only to decode utterances into transcriptions,but also to determine the reliabilities of the results,by Speech verification (SV) or Utterance Verification (UV). With conventional HMM, the measure of reliabilities can not be determined directly by the likelihoods of models. Whereas, Simplified Segmental Probability Model (SSPM), suggested in this paper,with its normalized likelihood, facilitates rendering SV and speech recognition at the same time and as a whole. SSPM also costs much less computation load than conventional HMM.
