Coordinating agent behavior in agent ensembles is a key challenge for distributed artificial intelligence. A programming model that supports multiagent ensembles and a Java-based prototype systems, the AgentFoundry, are presented. Issues of agent mobility and resource access that are useful for building complex real-world multiagent systems are discussed.

Necessary and sufficient conditions for hybrid automata to be non-blocking and deterministic (local existence and uniqueness of executions, respectively) are, developed. The problem of global existence of executions is discussed in the context of Zeno hybrid automata, that is, hybrid automata that exhibit infinitely many discrete transitions in finite time.

The log-periodic cavity-backed slot array (LPCBSA) is a wideband antenna that exhibits several attractive characteristics: (i) its planar structure allows it to be flush mounted on a vehicle and (ii) it is relatively easy to feed the antenna through integration with a planar circuit. This paper proposes a dual mode LPCBSA (DM-LPCBSA) which constitutes a variation on the LPCBSA that enables monopulse direction finding while maintaining the above advantages of the LPCBSA. The basic idea underlying the DM-LPCBSA is similar to that for the dual mode log-periodic dipole array: two LPCBSAs are combined together into a superstructure that can operate in sum and difference modes. This DM-LPCBSA antenna is highly suitable for wideband target identification purposes.

In this paper discovery of default knowledge as proposed by Mollestad [7], [8], [9], [10] is further investigated. Mollestad’s algorithm, as described in [9], is refined and extended in several ways. In particular, new heuristics guiding the search for default decision rules are proposed and evaluated. The results so far have been encouraging when the (modified) framework is compared to other rough set methods. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

This paper describes a standard interoperability model based on a knowledge representation language such as Conceptual Graphs (CGs). In particular, it describes how an Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) mapping facility can use CG contexts to integrate and compare different trade documents by combining and analysing different concept lattices derived from formal concept analysis theory. In doing this, we hope to provide a formal construct which will support the next generation of EDI trading concerned with corporate information. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1998.

This paper discusses a technique which shows how to integrate formal description techniques (FDTs) with specification & design methods such as OMT so that we can have new methods to support writing formal specifications. The integration mechanism is based on transformation rules of specification document produced following methods into the descriptions written in FDTs. The transformation rules specify the correspondences on two meta models;the method meta models and the FDT meta model, and are described as graph rewriting rules. As an example, we pick up OMT as a method and LOTOS as a FDT and define the transformation rule on their meta models. © 1998 IEEE.

ProGram is our in-house grammar based specification language targeted to specification of protocols, interfaces and control dominated functionality. The Program compiler implements such specifications in hardware. Specification of exception handling functionality and its automatic implementation are key requirements for a robust design methodology. In this paper, we present extensions to the ProGram language for specification of a wide range of exception handling functionality: reset to deal with exception handling needs of global nature, interrupt for representing exception handling on a hierarchical basis and error sequences to handle situations when inputs are not according to the specified grammar. © 1998 IEEE.

A principal problem of information systems (IS) development today is how to integrate the work activity and social context of users into the IS which is being designed. This paper is to delineate a sociocybernetic approach which enlightens the relationship between IS design activity, use activity, and the embedded social contextThis paper is in four parts. In the first part, first and second order cybernetics are employed as a general skeleton or structure for conducting the sociocybernetic approach. In the second and third parts, approaches from social autopoiesis theory and activity theory are introduced respectively to provide the skeleton of cybernetics with flesh and blood elements of real problems. The final part presents an emerging conceptual body resulting from an organic integration of the cybernetic structure and social-psychological elements which demonstrates the relationship between IS design activity, use activity, and embedded social context
